What paradox?

Just for a moment, imagine Messi and Ronaldo being on the same team. Ronaldo as the striker, Messi in a more "find the space" role. I think they would have ruled any league they were in. Would have humiliated the best defenses anyone had to offer. Except Puyol, that man would have put his face in front of a power shot from Ronaldo.

Heart says Ronaldo. Brain says Messi. When i wached football the most (2016-2018), it was Ronaldos dominanse and i loved waching his goal complinations. At the time of the world cup final i started to like more of Messis playing style. But i can never forget my love towards Ronaldo scoring. At the end of the day i learned to appriciate both players.

I think that Messi is the GOAT, but Ronaldo isn't far from him, people who think that Ronaldo is the GOAT have a point, people who think Messi is the GOAT have a point.

With Messi's playmaking and Ronaldo's ability to score from that, If they were on the same team then that would create an unstoppable force. If the other team would try to stop Ronaldo then Messi would be there to cover his weaknesses. I think Ronaldo covers Messi's weaknesses to a lesser extent than Messi would cover Ronaldo but I could see Ronaldo pulling out some insane risky stuff if the team is in a losing position. Its not really worth it to compare them because of all the different factors that come into play, all we can do is be glad that we were graced with two kings of football and not just one.

Even though some fans still want to debate Messi vs. Ronaldo, it’s no longer a contest. When we watch them play football, especially when they’re not scoring, it becomes evident that Messi has far more in his arsenal than Ronaldo.

It's a rivalry in the sense that other than CR7 no one else in their generation came close to Messi's level, be it on the football field or in stats. But the truth is, and most EPL fans have a hard time accepting this (most notably Man Utd fans), Messi is just better. They are not on the same level. In terms of career, yes, they're comparable. They're more victorious and consistent than everyone else. Some players have more World Cup titles than them, or more Champions League titles, but when you add stats + longevity + individual accolades + consistency + iconic performances to the equation there's no debate. It's Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo first, then comes everyone else. That's one thing. But on the pitch? I'm sorry. Messi is better. He always was and he always will be. You can like watching other players more than you like watching Messi - like my father prefers Ronaldinho over him - but he is the best player of the last 30 years and arguably the GOAT. That's a fact.

Ive seen R9s regen in CR7. Then he was regened in mbappe. Weve seen guys like that before. Guys like Messi dont just pop out in the next generation. I do think that both messi and Ronaldo are the best in history. Maradona and pele have been outshined by how long both these titans have done it and how consistent they've been. Football will never be as enjoyable as it was back then.

What a great video! As an argentinian myself of course I prefer Messi for ovbious reasons, but I can't deny Ronaldo's talent and magnitude to this sport. Growing up as a teenager watching them play every weekend was something I truly treasure now as I am older, it was an unique time for football and we all enjoyed it so much that only now we are being conscious of what we witnessed. And even if I prefer Messi it's sad for me that Cristiano didn't won more trophies with his national team, he really deserved more, but even if he didn't no one can deny he's a legend.

There was no rivalry. It became clear in 2012 itself. A mere machine cannot rival a demigod. Ronaldo is a prolific goalscorer with a never-give-up worth ethic but Messi is something out of this world.

I consider myself lucky to have been able to watch both players in their prime. They are true masters of their craft.

All of us watching football for the past fifteen, twenty, twenty-five years were lucky to live in this era. Ronaldo showed his greatness first, being older. Messi appeared shortly after that. They gave us beautiful football...and don't forget it's a team sport. And don't forget the greats on other teams. The argument was stupid, it was always stupid. How can you watch football, watch Madrid's three-in-a-row Champions League titles and not understand Ronaldo's greatness, his otherworldly ability to score goals at any moment, from seemingly anywhere? Messi can easily match Ronaldo's goal scoring skills as he has done if not surpassing Ronaldo's ability goal scoring skills (ex 2012) but Ronaldo can never match or even cone close to Messi's ability to dribble, playmake, passing etc or Messi's accolades. It's only a rivalry because the​ media needed someone to oppose Messi at the top, there's nothing that Ronaldo does that Messi can't do better nothing.

I’m just grateful that I got to live in an era where 2 of the greatest players existed at the same time. If Messi wins I’m happy if Ronaldo wins I’m happy. If one loses I’m not happy. I think the “rivalry” would be less toxic if people were more grateful for football giving us 2 legends 🔥

On the topic: The era of them will always be special to me, even though I was just a kid, I've seen Messi since he was starting to leave a mark at Barca. I have great respect for both players in different ways, minus CR7 going to Saudi Arabia, which taints his legacy not as footballer but as a person in my eyes. The only thing is: I will see goals like Ronaldo's again. Probably not as many over such a long period of time, but still they will always exist. I've never seen a player who moves like Messi and I sadly don't think I ever will again. No tricks, just a man with the ball glued to his feet who knows what the defender will do next before he does. It feels impossible to recreate. I'm just grateful to have witnessed all of this.

Since there's no paradox, I'm gonna drop mine: Messi and Ronaldo rivalry helped their public figure wayyy more than their fans understood. They created "their era", but, for example, has only Messi been good enough to create his own era WITHOUT Ronaldo? In my opinion, both could not be the goat for 2 big reason: Ronaldo has obvious big lacks in his game, his touch is incomparable to a lot of legends, not only Messi (plus he ruined his career when he went to Juventus, a club that joined at the wrong time). Messi didn't really prove himself outside of Barcelona, but my main critic is that he doesn't have the charisma to change games. Way too much times I watched a game with Barcelona getting destroyed and Messi being a GHOST in the pitch (Liverpool, Roma, Bayern, Real multiple times). Messi is probably the most gifted player of all time, but in my eyes, he will never be the best of all time. (I mean, he used to throw up before big games. I have a character like MJ or Tom Brady in my mind when I'm talking about a GOAT) PS: The real paradox is: If this was the Messi-Ronaldo era, their contraposition itself says that they both can't be the Goat. The goat dominates an era, like Mj, or Pele-Maradona for football. The fact that the football world is still divided between Messi and Ronaldo means that nobody clearly won over the other, so they can't be the goat of football. Recent bias will let Messi fans say that Messi is the goat after the WC. I still remember the picture with Ronaldo counting the 5th Champions League after scoring 15 goals in the tournament. I don't think I have to add anything more)

Messi is easily the better player and has always been. Better playmaker, dribbler, passer, arguably even scorer if we look at the advanced statistics. Also better teammate and less selfish. However, the amount of disrespect towards Ronaldo (which is exacerbated by how he acts nowadays) is crazy. People saying "it was never a debate" etc. People forget very quickly that Ronaldo only became a pure goalscorer in his last 3 years in Madrid. And that is thanks to his chronic knee injury which made him change his dribbling and freekick style. Before that...he was something else entirely

I feel like Messi is Yang and Ronaldo is Yin, especially with Ronaldo's general portrayal as the "villain". Also with how Yang is "light" and Yin is "darkness"... Messi is almost always positive and mostly avoids controversies, the same can't be same for Cristiano. And regarding charisma, just look at the way Argentina players treat Messi and compare it to how Portugal players treat Cristiano. Messi is a proper leader.

There's no paradox: Rivalries sell, so the sports media hyped up the only player putting up similar numbers to Messi and ignored the fact that Messi is clearly superior at everything else. Casual fans and kids fell for it, and since Ronaldo is a couple of years older plenty of people had time to become die-hard Ronaldo fans before Messi came along, and stubbornly stuck with their guy despite the evidence.

As an American and someone that started watching soccer only a few years ago this is my flawed take. Ronaldo is like a flashy receiver. Can make insane plays. Can win you a game on his athleticism alone. Major threat. Messi is Tom Brady. Not physically impressive. Not the fastest. Not the strongest. But he is the smartest. And that allows him to exploit your flaws to win a game. Both are legends. But one is, in my opinion, the better footballer. And elevates his teammates more. And that’s Messi.

I believe that both of these players were great but a bit unfair. The media pressured them into a long rivalry and that’s how they were able to win multiple Ballan D’ors.

Both sets of fanboys are silly tbh. Can't really compare as both have pluses and minuses against them. Messi more skilful, Ronaldo done it in 3 of the top leagues Messi only stayed in his comfort zone with Barca built around him, Ronaldo could be histrionic, Messi always a joy to watch, Ronaldo just a beast etc etc. Thing is though, i grew up watching Maradona and Pele, and they were and are the real goats. If they played today with the fairer rules and better pitches they would be even better wheras if Messi and Ronaldo played in the 60s to the 80s i dont think they would be the same level- especially Messi with his slight frame. So for me Pele and Maradona top together and Messi and Ronaldo 2nd together.(technically 3rd i know 😊).

Loads saying Messi is effective even without scoring but tbh I've seen plenty of games where Cr7 is creating great goalscoring chances but his selfishness gets in the way not lack of ability. He wants to be the scorer where Messi doesn't seem to care as much as both got well into their 30s. Messi is the goat for sure but Cr7 is not miles behind like some claim. The man consistently kept up with the anointed goat Messi for 12 or 13+ years. As an Arsenal fan, this man had everything, I can't believe some are claiming, he was only a goalscorer.

There is so much to say about both. One thing I would like to add was their leadership skill. While both being important leaders to their team, Ronaldo developed the skills earlier then Messi and pushed his team forward while Messi relied for a longer time on player like Xavi and Iniesta. Both are in the end exceptional leaders now for their team espically in their national teams. The only critique for Ronaldo is that he doesn't step down in Portugal which will leave a negative mark in that area.

Tbh it’s not even a question of who is better. Messi clears Ronaldo by a large margin. No one would argue that in open play Messi is better than Ronaldo in regards to passing and keeping the ball. He creates way more chances and can be great deep in the midfield while Ronaldo is primarily just a goalscorer. Ronaldo fans will argue Ronaldo is a more complete goal scorer and therefor is better, only Messi at his peak scored more goals than Ronaldo at his peak. Messi was leading La liga in goals and assists while both players were in the league in their primes. It’s not even a debate , that’s with out even mentioning the World Cup
