Why use a router bit instead of a planer? Well, sometimes it just works. Patrick Holcombe shows us why - and how to set it all up.
Timber slab planing with a router is popular due to size limitations and/or cost of large-capacity thicknessers. This bit is specifically designed for timber removal of Australian hardwoods with six shallow cutters and maximum chip ejection.

Table of contents with times is very useful. I added 10:31 discussion on the planer bit. I use Day One app for IPad Pro to tag videos, and review them later on. Repeated viewing often picks up important details missed at first viewing. Great credit to Timbecon, and their instructors, especially Patrick, for all the common sense videos. Humour is also good fun. I like to support those who educate and inform, and find that web site ordering from Timbecon with delivery to Sydney is very quick and freight fees reasonable. Only ever had to return one item, and that was painless.

Very good information sir. Couple of thoughts. For your rails, you could use old bed frame rails to build them. 2nd, glue gun your wedges to the piece and to the base to keep from slipping. Last, add some cleats/guides to your sled to keep it from slopping around. Good video.

I saw a similar post a while ago. It was suggested the router passes were made with the grain as opposed to across the grain. It achieved a better finish.

Enjoyed your video. Would suggest some minwax paste wax on your sled bed. Will reduce the friction and bind when using the router.

Double tube conduit 1" with plywood wood spans to keep them parrallel these 2 pair two get mounted down the length the middle of the timber/log (4 scres in at least 1" since it will end up as a face so the outside 4 points will eventually disappear as it is rotated 180 and lastly the last two sides to face square One could quarter saw with a reciprocating or 14"> or greater circular blade.

Good luck sharpening a Tungsten Carbide bit of any shape. They are extremely hard but brittle. The only way I've found is to use a diamond stone to touch it up now and again. But don't attempt using a grinder of any kind as the bit will probably over heat and/or shatter. TCT bits are not meant to be sharpened. They last for years and then buy a new one.

When you pull the router back to you, do you do that before moving the sled? So you would still plane left to right in one direction only? Used your design and just build a sled. Ready to try it.

Hi Kelly, we would pull the router back before moving the sled, otherwise you risk climb cutting and the router grabbing and running towards you. Good luck! Let us know how you find the sled!

One other thing I've seen is to cut two channels (dato) in the bottom of the sled, the width equal to the thickness of the rails, such that it will slide perfectly straight along the rails and not shimmy at all. Just yet another step towards making it as even as absolutely possible.

I watched entire vid hoping to see what router bit you used, and how to set the depth of the bit. I am watching as I attempt to flatten a slab of Pecan wood. My surface planer bit will not reach the slab no matter what adjustment I make. Very frustrated. Can someone assist?

Perhaps a collet extender will help you - that is what I use - gives me a lot more depth- good luck

I would have guide rails clamped under the sled and stopes for the router fro the width much more accurate runs. What was the bit cost and supplier maker. The reason I am herre.

Great video, thank you. I had a question; you got everything dead flat and then you wedged up two of the ends. Does the wedging change the flatness? It seems to me ( and I’m just learning how to do this) that would take it out of flat.

Hi Lloyd, not sure if you got an answer anywhere, and I only just saw this so I'll answer as best as I can ... the wedges underneath are to make the top of the slab as level as possible (i.e. so it doesn't rock which would be a disaster while you are routing it ) so you only take out the minimum off the top to get a flat surface .. this becomes the reference surface so when you flip it over you no longer need the wedges at all to flatten the surface that was previously at the bottom, of course you may have more work then as the highs will tend to be higher, but overall it ends up being the same amount of material removed and both surfaces should be flat at the end.

I have a few end grain boards that needs flattening i tried to cheat by putting them through my planer but resulted in a bruised hip after it decided it didn't want to play and kicked back into my hip will any flat bit work on endgrain

Do you ever get burn marks with this? I’m trying to flatten oak, only taking 1/16th of an inch off with all sorts of speeds and it isn’t working.

I liked the job done,but & a big but,it costs far 2 much money for my liking.lol it cost more money than some routers. My router cost just a little bit more than that. I would buy a great set of router bits for that price,or would be glad to get them for Less.
