Feel stupid asking this but if you do feel lumps or bumps extraorally, what's the next step? Do you monitor for a couple weeks then have them return? Immediately refer? And refer to who?

refer to GP. I had a patient with hard submandibular lymph node. Turned out to be tumor..

no such thing as a stupid Q! If in doubt, refer. Sometimes we have someone with bilateral tender lymph nodes that coincide and are due to a recent/ongoing cold/illness. If we feel a lump and it's unilateral, then for sure a referral to Maxillofacial surgery is warranted. Every country should have some guidelines to follow. If I don't have a diagnosis for the lump, I am for sure referring. Hope that helps

Hi Jaz, great video and love from Australia. Im a final year student BDS student and would love if you could cover obstructive sleep apnoea. It feels the teaching in dental school focused on pathophysiology and just ensuring we just know what it is. But we are missing a real world view on OSA assessment, treatment options and referral pathways at least in my part of the world! Thanks heaps for all your hard work 🖤

Hey buddy! Thanks for commenting and all the best for your final year. You guys in Australia and generally ahead of us in the UK when it comes to Sleep disordered breathing diagnosis and management...but we're slowly catching up! I have only been sleep testing for 18 months but I will surely get an experienced guest to cover these - thanks!

Whats the average time a routine checkup takes? My work place allocates 30mins per patients. I love talking to my patients and explaining what im doing. Lots of patients I've seen notice the differences because other clinician's dont talk. However after the check-up, 15-20mins has passed i havent started on scaling or other procedures yet.

honest answer is that some clinicians will take 5-10 mins, others 45 minutes+. It depends on how you position yourself as a clinic, if you are able to bill enough for the additional time ie. the purpose and set-up of your clinic. I am 'allowed' 15-20 mins from my clinic for a routine exam, i would LOVE 30! I used to work in a clinic where we did 1 hour new patient and 30 mins routine follow up and I felt that was the best for me

My right tmg does not go lateral when i open my mouth. Never realised this before, thank you so much! What should i do about it, i am a beginner general dentist

Hiya! Not sure I understand- when you open we ideally want straight opening - do you mean you are not able to wiggle your jaw side to side? Either way, I was taught by my mentor to intervene when there is PDQ Pain Dysfunction Quality of Life affected If your discovered issue does not affect PDQ - it may not be worth treating

@@protrusiveI do feel pain and discomfort in my right tmg. I can open my mouth straight and i can move it side to side freely. I mean when i touch my condyles while i open my mouth i feel that left condyle moves slightly lateral when it moves forward while the right one just moves straight And the right one starts moving forward much earlier then left one.
