Matthew Ball and The Royal Ballet rehearse Alistair Marriott’s The Unknown Solider, filmed as part of #WorldBalletDay 2018. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk...
Alastair Marriott has created numerous works for The Royal Ballet, including Being and Having Been, Tanglewood and Sensorium. His pieces are inspired by a wide range of sources, from Children of Adam, a response to Walt Whitman's poems, to Connectome, a visually stunning collaboration with designer Es Devlin, inspired by theories of neuroscience. Marriott's new ballet The Unknown Soldier, another collaboration with Devlin, imagines the story of individuals caught up in the turmoil of war. Set to a commissioned score from Dario Marianelli (Darkest Hour, Anna Karenina, Atonement), it will commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I.

Every time they jump, for a second I forget they’re just leaping. For a good second, I think they’re flying. Brilliant! 👏

It's so stunning to see the complexity of every coreohraphy. How can they memorize all those movements?

So nothing to do with the book (1954) or the movies (1955, 1985, 2017) by the same name?
@MxDandy
@MxDandy 5 лет назад
It is a work commissioned for the centenary of the end of WWI, based on various sources, not in the book.

I just find it unfortunate that they chose to use a name that has so much meaning to a whole nation outside their own. The book is part of Finnish national legacy, and if it was even an inspiration, I wish they would credit it. Using the title with a totally unrelated piece would be in such a bad taste, if not plain rude.

@@elleplaudite :( well, it would be great to see another ballet inspired by such a book, or is it related to WWI? It might be one of the sources, I don't know. I'm not sure about the title be in good or bad taste since I'm not Finnish, but in English this particular phrase is generally related to WWI soldiers (andaybe also WWII? I'm not sure), because of the great ammount of young lives lost, many of then of names unknown. But your coment definitely made me want to read that book.

The "unknown soldier" is a worldwide concept. So many many people have heard of this without knowing about a connection with this book. So perhaps its the concept alone they were interested in, along with the general notion of what it means. Nearly every nation has a place to honor the "unknown soldier".

@@elleplaudite This is very well known in the UK - The grave of the Unknown Soldier is in Westminster Abbey in London and is always marked by Poppies at Remembrance time - he was buried on the 11th November 1920 simultaneously with an unknown soldier being buried at the Arc de Triomphe in France - and these were the first known graves to honour all the dead of the First World War

1 Timothy 4:7-8 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

What brainless drivel. Life to come? What evidence to you have of that? None, and you know it. Just hormonal fantasizing. How embarrassing for you.
