Imagine in comments. You can also put sugar in chicken. Pre mix with sugar and chicken, lay it in there, Put some 2 cups of creamy milk, then put a whole butter in it, then heat it up, add powder, pat pat pat, into the batter. After that, deep fry it. and there you go. Sweet chicken with random ingredients.
So many comments on my only salting the chicken before roasting. It's English roast chicken not southern friend chicken, don't confuse the two. Just salting makes the skin incredibly crisp and delicious and you really get to taste the chicken. You don't have to smother every protein you cook in herbs and spices. Look at the roast chicken Michelin star chef Thomas Keller cooks... www.thecomfortofcooking.com/2015/05/thomas-keller-3-ingredient-roasted-chicken.html
Everyone has their own way to cook food. You were the royal chef for a reason and the members of the royal family loved your food exactly as you made it. I bet this dish would be brilliant with just a little salt as well. Thank you for this channel! :)
@the Emperor of man U.K: Britain + Northern Ireland Britain: Scotland, Wales and England. They formed after the act of union in 1706 and 1707. The British empire didn't form the UK nor did it conquer Scotland. Literally, England had no more kings so they invited the Scottish King James to join both England and Scotland to form Great Britain. Hence his name as King James I & IV, with him being the first King James in England and the 4th in Scotland. Side note: the uk formed the british empire, not the empire formed the uk
Oh how funny I thought someone just rang my doorbell and I was not about to get up and answer it thank you I feel better now don't feel so mean or rude LOL
@@navalspray2673 When you've got crispy chicken like that, especially when using fresh, free range chicken, the juice from the chicken is drawn out by the salt and gives it such a pure flavour. There are many ways to make delicious chicken, but this is by far the simplest and tastes just as good as any other.
@@bengoacher4455 Exactly, the secret ingredient here is actually the quality of the chicken. And from what I can see the chef is using some good old "village" chicken. Else you're better off adding some spices to get some taste.
I wish more people would realize that the technique to being a better cook is being more simple. Adding aromatics and garnishes to the dish just adds aesthetic, sometimes flavor.
I'm from England and I get why people are saying this is underseasoned but this is for kids he literally says this if the kids don't want food that is seasoned like no tomorrow then that's fine it's his job to make it for their tastes not others
the reason why he only put salt on the chicken to make it crispy was because that he was using free range chicken or "village" chicken, which has a lot of juice and salt can take out the moisture from it. it's not your daily average grocery store chicken.
@@sammysoppy3361 Fresh chicken has a ton of natural flavour when you aren't eating the frozen grocery store stuff and in instances where you can get high quality chicken salt is really only what you need.
@@sammysoppy3361 If you are eating factory raised chicken it has no taste. I get locally raised and just throw the whole thing in the oven. Delicious, doesn't need seasoning when you have excellent ingredients. It's like people who say they "hate tomatoes", guaranteed they have only had crap, big box or fast food tomatoes, not fresh, heirloom or locally grown ones. You don't even need salt, you can eat them like eating a piece of fruit.
It helps, not inspite of it. Everyone behaves better the more you up their status, popularity, money, and instilled sense how to be etc and police and cctv. Excluding the top who watch the rest of the world and act on it, those behave differently because they're completely secret inspite of the aforementioned perks. They learn nothing inspite of all the good things to be inspired by and education, that's because god blinded and wouldn't let them have actual good things for the sake of their own benefit, only for ruin and doin dirt, because he is the top.
@@magickwoodlands Its literally more expensive to buy premade stuff, if you're poor it's better to make your own food 100%, even things like cheese are actually very easy and cheaper to make than buy
@@SchnookieC That's for rich countries. In some places (some third world countries/not all) it's cheaper to buy premade food while it's classier and more expensive to have it homemade.
"So a little mozzarella cheese in there too" *proceeds to throw the whole plate* haha I'm sure it tastes delicious! I've NEVER tried mac & cheese but, for the first time in my life, I feel now the urge to try it ! And I'm gonna do it, for sure ! The chicken was soooo crispy. Thank you, chef !
Zander he makes what the british royalties wanted, not what he wanted. If they wanted it like that you can’t tell them to fuck off and slap 1000000 spices in it.
@@kine6452 what! Where did I say that he needs to add a shitload of spices? I just meant that he's not a better Chef than everyone in the comment section combined.
@@hephaistosthesmith2069 either way I never said you had to add 1000000 spices and tell them all to fuck off. cedric is of his nut if that's what he thinks.
Everyone joking about the spices, it’s actually true. UK was plagued in the past with food adulteration which included overly spiced meats to cover the rot. Thus not spicing foods became equivalent to healthy non toxic food and it just became a dietary cultural norm.
Legend27JR I never said they need to be a royal chef, @hayden mccarthy stated things about the queen as if he knew her and her preferences personally as if he was her royal chef. Make sense?
Naomi Evans-Wright you can infer that her taste is bland by seeing that she eats salted chicken when she could eat anything she wants. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out
When I watch a Gordon Ramsey video I think: "wow that's amazing technique, looks great". When I watch a video by The royal chef I think: " I REALLY want to eat that". Your passion is incredible.
It's clear that the people complaining here about the chicken only being salted 1, have never eaten fresh chicken 2, clearly know nothing about flavour combinations and 3, are so bad at cooking that they have to hide behind packet seasonings. Fresh and lightly salted baked chicken tastes phenomenal, especially when it is being paired with a rich mac and cheese such as the one made here. The very fact that he used heaps of parmesan and fresh cheddar says it all. You don't need to smother the chicken in seasonings, it will destroy the dish and make the entire thing unbalanced and incredibly salty. No one wants that. The clear issue here is that the Americans in the comments are used to bland mac and cheese made with plastic cheese, and so they have to over compensate by lathering their GMO'd tasteless chicken with more plastic spices. Come to the UK and taste some REAL food.
It's a WONDERFUL cookbook, and I've learnt so much! I really enjoy that like Julia Child you're TEACHING, not just putting on a show like they do on those network shoes. Thank you! This looks delicious.
You have the sweetest personality and wish I had friends like you. You just make me happy watching. No blood pudding though. Much love. You’re a sweet soul.
As a chef by trade, its absolutely fantastic watching Darren cook, I could watch these videos all day, he doesn't rush when he's by himself, he takes his time and does it to perfection (man after my own heart) compared to the chefs I've worked with over the years, who never seemed to slow down lol, so It's an absolute pleasure watching him.
He rushed that roux? i think so, didnt even add the milk slowly, would of been a little bit lumpy for sure, cream in the bechamel? thats all signs of a dodjy chef! was not perfection... traditional bechamel takes 20 minutes to cook i was so confused because to work that job, he would of have to been 100 percent on point on everything he touches... maybe he just got lazy in the recreation of it.
My best explanation; the salt alone is able to bring out a lot of the natural juices and flavors in the chicken so it doesn’t really need seasoning. The realistic one is that “oh it’s just kids lol no need to over complicate this”
Lots of people mocking the very out-dated notion that British (white) people don't season their food. True or not, this was a meal prepared for children.
I just made this delicious meal, in the middle of the afternoon, day after Christmas. The Macaroni and Cheese is so flavorful and eating it with the chicken is a perfect combination. If you seasoned this chicken with sauces and whatever, it would take away from the beautiful fragrant Mac & Cheese. Thank you for sharing this recipe with us.
As a Brit I’m ashamed that this chicken looks so bland, I promise we don’t all eat plain chicken 😂 the national dish of England is literally Curry, which is nothing but flavour.
I am definitely in Nannys' camp! All through the video I kept saying there needs to be something green, green beans, a salad, broccoli......something! Good for her! This meal looks amazing and when good quality food is used there isn't any need for a whole lot of seasoning.
Salt is the general key just to making something taste good. Most spices create a depth and complexity to flavors. Considering it was made for children, whose palate usually ends at salty or sweet for what they like I'd say there's nothing here. Let alone salt is essentially the only seasoning you actually need to make something taste decent.
mac and cheese is the first thing I ever learned how to make from scratch at the age of 15 and ignited my love of cooking. this is the exact same recipe I used back then. Now when I do this cheese sauce ill usually experiment with different cheese and spice blends. My latest has been a smoked gouda and fontina mix with a touch of cayenne pepper.
for everyone freaking out about the lack of spices. This was a dish for children. So the lack of spices and seasonings make a lot of sense to me. Also they weren't just children , they were British children, so yeah.
nin met Bro it’s not hate it’s an observation. It’s very basic stuff he’s doing. Trust me my Antiguan mother and grandmother taught me well!! I repeat this man is a mediocre chef. Says a lot about you if you don’t realize that. I wouldn’t eat his food but that’s just me. I’m not a royal 👑
I enjoy McGrady's demos so much! Beautiful Mac-n-Cheese. I know that many chefs skip mustard but I'm a fan and when it's baked, I always top with bread crumbs.
I love how this guy is seriously trying to teach everyone how to cook and everyone is just viewing him as a meme and I am up for it, boarding this train.
Oh my goodness, this Gent is adorable :) - excuse the intrusion, but I'd of tossed some seasoned bread crumbs on the mac&cheese, and dredged the broccoli through the cheese sauce and topped with toasted bread crumbs. Yum!
Another commenter said you"re a ray sunshine and they're right and you are. We love your royal stories , they give a more human side to the lives of the royals. I am a huge fan of the royals, watched every royal wedding since Prince Edward's, only missed Princess Eugenie's. They maybe princes, but like any other lids, William and Harry loved what other kids loved, simple fare like roast chicken abd Mac and cheese. My mom made the best homemade Mac and cheese , really miss it now that she's gone. Tried to make it after she passed and haven't tried since.
I'm making this for dinner tonight! It's such a tasty treat that's not hard to make. One simple thing I always do is season my macaroni with white pepper when it's out the oven. I find it compliments the mac and cheese so well and I love a few wee cherry tomatoes on the side with mine too 🤗😋 mmm delightful!
Welcome to the world of Brits where you get picked on for using spices in your food to make it tasty. Really sucks if you're indian or Chinese or korean where spices are everything The Brits seem to think that if you buy a "good" or "quality" piece of chicken, you don't need to season it with anything other than salt
I love that too mmm and with Darren's lovely speaking voice and demonstration skills who doesn't love hearing and listening to him and seeing him enjoying and eating the fruits of his work!
Americans complaining about the 'bland english food'. In France I've been served plain chicken and roast potatoes, but the quality of produce was through the roof it didn't need any artificial flavours. Quality produce is something Americans don't understand
All these keyboard warriors attacking him for only using salt 😑 Guys, this chef had cooked for royal family. He was one in million chef. Even Wolfgang, Ramsay and many top chefs are not on same level with him. Meanwhile you only reheat frozen meal at home. So hush 😏
That's what you do when you cook for children. You have to make food simple enough to stop the kids from playing the fussy card, but just tasty enough that it isn't too bland. Which means salt. Salt draws out the crispiness of the skin and enhances the 'chickenness' of the chicken. Which makes it tasty for the still-developing taste-buds of children. Do you really think the former chef to the royal family has just one chicken recipe up his sleeve?
Sprinkle nutmeg on broccoli instead of salt and pepper. If there is leftover broccoli, put it in your scrambled eggs with a touch more nutmeg and cheddar. Wonderful!!!
I tried this recipe and it was good. The mac and cheese was terrific! I tried the chicken and I wasn't expecting much with just salt. But the chicken was surprisingly good. Sometimes less is more at times.
I really enjoy your stories and recipes from your time in the royal service. It would be interesting to hear about your catering business, your company's recipies and how the heck did you turn up in Dallas?
