Wrist, THEN FINGERS. Thank you for explaining that. It took me a long time to discover that was what needed to happen in my playing. I actually took the approach of just spending a long time experimenting to figure out the motion slowly, kinda dramatically letting the stick pull my fingers out and into the position to use them for the next stroke (while keeping wrist stationary but relaxed). Doing this really helped me gain an appreciation for the techtechnique and feel confident I'm doing it right at the higher tempos. Drilling it through the awkward and the painfully slow tempos took a lot of time and patience, but I'm glad I did.

Wow. I was taught even when going super slowly to still use the pinky action. Fully letting the rebound happen is a breakthrough!

I know I'm a little late to the game, but for anyone that is interested, Drummer ITP is an app that uses the microphone on your phone to monitor accuracy, consistency, and dynamics and gives you a score accordingly. Pairing that with this awesome lesson from Stephen Clark is a great way to accelerate your learning with real time feedback. Thanks for this lesson, Stephen. Always looking for ideas for workouts and ways to improve.

I have an electronic set that I play on. I feel this is one of the downfalls of an EKit. Because the cymbals are rubber and you get great rebound (or at least better than metal) from them. And you can adjust the sensitivity curve so that even a weak double sounds strong.
@catriona5268
@catriona5268 2 года назад
You can chuck a towel/mousepad on top of the hihat to kill the bounce of the rubber. Or, if sound levels aren't an issue, use a round icecream tub lid.

That is why you don't watch these videos. Everybody needs to just STOP cheating and learn how to do it for real. I taught a kid how to do it in 10 minutes yesterday! 10 = she had it over 200bpm and every note was the same volume. She can now play doubles better than the guy in the video. That's the point of doubles.. They're supposed to sound like singles. This dude's examples = he doesn't even know how to keep the levels the same. He sounds like a person playing singles, but one hand is broken. Until something is mastered, people need to refrain from teaching it. It leads people astray. Learn this technique, and you'll end up spending years trying to fix it later. Start out learning it right, you're good forever. I'm sure there's a Jim Chapin video out there. Watch him, and turn this confusing junk off. You're hurting yourself.

Hello Stephen, I practice mostly on an E-kit but do most gigs on a full acoustic kit. There definitely are differences but you can make that work for you by being adaptable. I have been doing your cheat/chart course & despite feeling like dropping out half way in, I stuck it out & I reckon I am getting a little better at listening & recognising the sections. What you are talking about here is spot on for me for getting my doubles faster and smoother. I have doubled my doubles speed based on your previous You tubes/member videos, however I have struck a ceiling. I had intuited that there maybe something I still don't know about. I had used a combination of some fingers and some wrist - at the same time - but this might just be the final missing bit that will allow me to get better control and move to a higher speed. Thank you. Regards Owen Brown from Oz

Although I don't have a kit yet, I've be practicing on my practice pad, and I feel like I'm getting better and faster. Like, whenever I'm practicing, I listen to a range of songs, mostly rock, dynamic, and poly-rhythmic songs to help me with doubles triplets, etc, whenever I'm playing along to the melodies (not grooves). My only issue at the moment is that I'm still struggling to move around the kit, like what you said halfway through the video about instead of playing single fills, I struggle with fast fills or chops. Any tips on movement? Btw, great video, Stephen 👍

16:29 the 3rd exercise with the fingers is definetly something that came naturally to me. I mean i kind of have ditched playing singles(at higher tempos) thus due to which my doubles got better. Although have an even single stroke does help you out in the name of "accenting". Does anyone feel that playing doubles is like "cheating"? Because for some reason in the "metal reddit servers " playing doubles or heel double bass(kind of like playing doubles on foot) is regarded as "cheating"? Any thoughts on this one folks?
@matchu_music

I've been having trouble with believe it or not, my right finger and thumb over the index finger and thumb being able to endure holding the stick. I had a little trouble with this really only with drum set not with marching snare drum or concert drums snare drums. And then I switch it over to the first and second finger like a mallet situation but I can't do that forever either. So I switched back and forth a little. It's getting worse as I get older I feel a little arthritis in the index finger the left hand however since I worked on it to work on my weaker hand is fine whether I use match grip or my traditional group I prefer if I started with. 😵😎 . So to you or anybody out there have a suggestion how to have the endurance of my right index finger which I think is the problem as well as I need to practice more. I'm in a position where I'm going to have to get a storage space just to practice being that I have a wife working at home and I can't disturb her with my drama and I don't even think I can use electronic drums cuz we're in the same space. Everything is maxed up in the house no space to use the garage or whatever or another bedroom. It's not catastrophic but it's annoying to me looks kind of weird too the people who are drummers or anybody was really seeing this. It reminds me of when I've seen before Dennis Chambers would change from that script to traditional group in the middle of a song or Solo or something. Doesn't look good to me

You could just start by accenting the 2nd note of each double stroke on each hand and it will accomplish a more even sounding double stroke roll without this super long explanation. I've never heard a drum instructor tell me to change my technique for only a slot of 20 beats per minute? Find a technique you can use the whole way through.

15 years of playing drums and watching videos and i was suspecting i wasnt being told something and I felt like i was doing something wrong trying to find a way to fix my doubles in this bpm..... Its time to get right with Jesus. nobody is automatically gonna go to heaven at the end of it, we all have lied or stolen or had sex before marriage and the punishment is hell. Jesus died so you can get a clean slate and forgiveness of future sins if you repent of them once you commit them, so you receive the gift of forgiveness by following him. When you start you have to stop sinning, and follow his word and obey it. That’s following Jesus. Read your Bible!
