If K is way smaller than the concentration you're given, then you can make an "assumption" that simplifies your calculation.
In reality, no one quotes the Rule of 100, and we just make simplifying assumptions when K is "really small" which is a really relative term.

In my university, they taught us "the rule of 1000" where c/k should be greater than 1000 in order for -x to be removed.

in high school I use 500. Increasing the number I guess can potentially lower the accuracy of the answer

Cool beans man. My Chem Professor has been using this method, referring to it as the "simplifying assumption", Every time he brings it up during equilibrium he rushes through the method without actually explaining what he's doing. Thanks for the breakdown. very helpful.

What is the border line for how small x is to be considered insignificant to the equation? -Matt Takane
@berezker
@berezker 8 лет назад
How come they never teach this in some schools? We tediously have to use the quadratic equation to find this which takes ages especially numbers less than 1 like 0.024
@jamifrig

it would be a bit less confusing is you used M for concentration in the C/K expression but still a lot better than however my professor attempted to explain it

What if you don't have Keq and are only given a pressure of initial and a pressure of final? After you use the quadratic equation, how do you know which x to use?

May I ask what "Constant" exactly means? I don't have a clear definition and image of it. What will happen if constant of something is very large of small? And what does it represents?

what if you have two initial concentrations? Would you multiply them or add them, then divide by 100?

If the exponent of the Kb is less than 10^-3 you can assume that x is negligible.
@chuelo858
@chuelo858 7 лет назад
How "small" does K have to be to assume it has "negligible" effect?
@olo33xmillz99
@olo33xmillz99 6 лет назад
Kc values less than 10^-5 tend to have a negligible effect but you still have to check. 10^-4 may or may not. Bigger values tend than those previously mention more likely than not will have a significant effect.
@freedomofspeech122
@freedomofspeech122 5 лет назад
To know if X is negligible, there are two ways to check. One is calculating Concentration divided by the Constant (whether its Kb or Ka), and finding is greater than 100. If it is, it's neglible. If not, do the quadratic formula. If percent ionization is under 5%, you're good. The other way is to check if the constant is much smaller than the original concentration, which also makes the influence of X insignificant. Hope that helps.

Never saw "Rule of 100" in a textbook. However, some textbooks (e.g.- Zumdahl) use the better known "5% Rule." Google it for more info.

I know im a year late, but that means you can't ignore it and have to use the quadratic formula. if you see this im sure youve already graduated highschool and hence dont need it anymore (unless ofc youre trying to become a chemist)

For those wondering, he's (probably?) referring to the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, which really only works if x is small relative to our initial concentration, ie, we can make our assumption that x is negligible. Otherwise, you need the quadratic formula/ICE chart.
