For all you people who get their kicks out of needlessly correcting people, saying stuff like 'you're wrong, it's 35 minutes per half' - READ THE SUBTITLE AT THE 0:48 mark!!! Most normal games are 30 minutes per half (i.e. most of the games that are played) with Senior Inter-County matches being 35 minutes per half. This was addressed in the video!

It was easy to understand, but how on earth can a referee count four steps for each of the players when the respective player has the ball in his possession? Lol I wonder and credit goes to the referee.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 лет назад
Hi Arka Sarkar Referees are trained to do that, and players are trained to solo every four steps, so it's not as hard as you might think!
@josephboland627
@josephboland627 9 лет назад
Well he often gets it wrong both in gaelic football and hurling and is often a talking point after matches.A gaelic referee is a very brave man indeed as is a soccer referee,but a soccer referee is often paid not so with the gaelic referee.The soccer referee is generally better protected as regards stewarding and police protection than gaelic referees.
@bsheehy94
@bsheehy94 9 лет назад
The rulebook says 4 steps but you generally get away with it if you hop/solo every 7 steps or so. If referees were strict on the 4 steps they would be free kicks given every minute!
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 лет назад
bsheehy94 Yes, I know that the referee's give a little leeway and I've even seen players bounce the ball twice in succession. But I didn't want to confuse a complete beginner with all of that, so I quoted the rulebook. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

Big time life long college [American] football fan from Texas with an Irish surname here. I first read about Gaelic football many moons ago in high school. Finally got around to checking out some vids. (My mother and father in law went to Ireland last year and watched some on tv in a pub. So jealous.) This looks like a really beautiful game. I was watching this to refresh myself. When I was in Dublin there was a big crowd of sports fans heading to a game so I dumbly assumed it must be a football match. I asked asked local who was playing, and they informed me it was indeed not football, but GAELIC football that was going on. So when we got to a pub we watched the match and I absolutely loved the hell out of it. Great sport. Never knew of it before being in Ireland. I wish it was shown on TV in the states. Hi Ninh Ly , great video! I'm a GAA ref here in the French league (yes, there is a French league!) and I also play on the ladies team in my local club. Great work. The only thing I thought might have been missing from this vid was a bit about shouldering/tackling the ball, and the 'pickup' technique; although you do mention that you can't touch it on the ground, so I can't fault you there. There are so many different techniques and rules, and you're right not to want to make it too complicated in an introductory video! Great stuff.

Figra Ardham In ireland fan culture is a bit different you don't support the best team as such you support the team that represents your local county.For instance dublin supporters will always support dublin not kerry which are usually better.The same is true of some one in a weak county they will support there county not a top team like kerry or dublin.Soccer fans in ireland are completely different.In short the GAA is about where your from not what you like.Not that you have any choice,you probably have no irish connections or connections to a particular county just giving you an idea of the culture that surrounds the game though i wish you would support my parents county or the county iwas born and live in mayo and sligo
@figraa
@figraa 8 лет назад
Thanks for the explanation, stoney. I was always wondering that it is possible that some person from one county can support other county like soccer/football do. Btw, I'm actually not a "fan" of Dublin in football/soccer context. I just have a tendency to support them in Championship/League because when I began to understanding the gaelic games, I, by chance, watched the highlights of the matches which Dublin involved in from 2000s to 1970s matches. Then I learned about Dublin and voila. I think if I watched match highlights (for understanding gaelic games) that other counties involved, i.e. Wexford, maybe I could be Wexford "fan" and so on and so on and so on. Forgive my English, it is not my first language.

This is a really good precis and taught me plenty in a nice short time! I'd worked some of this out from watching but things like this are way better. Gaelic & Aussie Rules always look great fun to watch, but the main drawback for me is that having no Irish or Australian roots, I don't have any skin in the game and that's pretty important for me (not for others, I know, and I envy them!) I suppose I just need someone to assign me a team and a reason to support them... :-)

+John Curran Believe it or not, the players make NO money! Gaelic Football and Hurling are strictly amateur sports and players are not allowed to be paid to play for their respective teams! The sport is popular in Scotland also, but because it's similar to Aussie Rules Football, there's a compromise game called 'International Rules Football' which is a mix of both. Hope that helps?

+John Curran The stadium is the fourth largest in europe it holds 82000,but its only filled three times a year for gaelic football and maybe once for hurling.Other games also attract good crowds of around 40000 again only a couple .the average is about 18000 again this over a small number of games,It could be professional ,but only just.The sport works on a sense of community and local pride the fear is that would be lost if they were paid.
