Watch one of the most well documented fights of all time between Heavyweight World Champion George Foreman and Muhammad Ali in what would be billed as "The Rumble in the Jungle". More info below...
The Rumble in the Jungle and The Thrilla in Manilla are without a doubt the two most famous boxing fights of all time. They transcended boxing and even people who were not fans of the fistic sport have heard or know about these encounters. The Rumble in the Jungle is not a fight filled with boxing skill per say but actually 1 boxer getting the hell beaten out of him and yet coming out on top almost unscathed (at the time) against all odds. It was one of the most unexpected outcomes of any world title fight and a testament to just how great the 1970's era of boxing was. It's also hard to imagine knowing how the fight ended and what Ali was still to go on and achieve in his career, that Ali was actually the underdog in this fight and given almost no chance of winning...
George Foreman at the time of this fight was undefeated with 40 wins, 37 by knockout and a majority of those occurring in the first 3 rounds. In 1971 George Foreman stopped Gregorio Peralta in the 10th round to win the vacant NABF Heavyweight title and in 1972 he beat Miguel Angel Paez to add the Pan America Heavyweight title to his waist. These achievements were far out-shadowed however by his demolishing of Joe Frazier in 1973 when he stopped Smokin' Joe in the 2nd round to win the WBC and WBA World Heavyweight titles. He defend the titles against Jose Roman by 1st round KO and then Ken Norton by 2nd round KO. Foreman had cleaned out the heavyweight division on his way to the top and was seen as invincible. He was one of the heaviest hitters to ever lace gloves, undefeated in 40 fights and still only 25 years old. He was the clear standout favorite to win against Muhammad Ali even though he was not the most liked...
Muhammad Ali went into exile in 1967 following his refusal to fight in the Vietnam war and had to give up his World Heavyweight title. When he returned in 1970 the boxing landscape had changed and now Joe Frazier was World Heavyweight champion. Muhammad Ali was quickly given a shot at the new World Champ however much to every-bodies surprise Frazier would pull off the upset and win a 15 round unanimous decision. Although Ali would bounce back with wins against Jimmy Ellis, Mac Foster, George Chuvalo, Jerry Quarry, Floyd Patterson, Ken Norton and Joe Bugner among others, the Ali of the 70's was not the same quick footed bouncing Ali of the 1960's and his wins were not seen as anywhere near as impressive as Foreman's.
Please sit back and enjoy one the most famous fights in history, and if you have yet to watch it, you are in for a treat!

George foreman ended up being loved by everyone years later and today George foreman is adored by millions from all over the world! I remember as a kid my dad being the happiest man in the world when George won his second title at 45 and my dad was also a huge Ali fan! Two great boxers and two great men

One of the most significant fights of the century. I remember watching the fight live, and of course being a child, we ALL were rooting for Ali. We all just assumed he would win because he was 'Muhammad Ali'...but as I've grown I've come to appreciate the enormity of this upset. I truly feel this victory is what stamped Ali as The Greatest of All Times

You can't be so sure. The hunger, speed, power, viciousness and boxing IQ that a young, still trained by Cus Tyson, would have gave Ali all he could handle. You can say he beat Liston, Frazier, Foreman etc of course but I can say Spinks, Frazier and Norton gave him trouble and beat him too. Similarly to Tyson, Ali lost a chunk of his prime and did the bulk of his losing after his hiatus and Mike after his prison stint. Mike only ever lost to Buster Douglas in the upset of all upsets where he took him extremely lightly, apparently had clamydia and his groin was burning all match and he had run into a buzzsaw of a man possessed in Buster, who lost his ailing mother 3 weeks prior and she had told him he would win it. If prime Tyson fought prime Ali, it's most definitely not a foregone conclusion. I think Tyson has a good a chance as any to deal with Alis strengths and not get psyched out by his antics. Most people were already beat before they stepped into the ring against either all time great. Tyson lost some luster after Cus' death because he started partying and doing drugs and wholly becoming consumed with fame and fortune. Had that not been the case, clearly he also wouldn't have went to jail either and I'd say could've held up well for another 5-8 or so years comfortably on top. The old Tyson would have frustrated both Holyfield and Lewis too and each of those guys were all time as well that at their best would have given Ali a tough time as well. Tyson was special in that he truly had it all. He was and actually remains to this day, a very devoted student of the game. Really a professorial type grasp on the intricacies, strategies, history and essence of the sweet science that few have ever had, do currently or will ever. If you've not heard him talking boxing, give it a listen. He lived, are, slept, breathed boxing and Cus corralled his strength, aggression, insecurities, feelings of loneliness, a sense of being and gave him direction. He was totally lost after that and slowly started to show decay and rust as he leaned into his celebrity status and partying lifestyle and away from training etc. His ego was part of it too. Cus would tell him m he was the greatest and gave a young boy confidence to do what he did. After that, people like Robin Givens, Don King and other nefarious people who had no interest in his place in the history of boxing were the types he surrounded himself with. Mike was too immature and unready to face the world by himself and nobody else could bridle the beast. Many forget just how dominant Mike was, how young he was and how feared and seemingly indestructible he was. Many folks wouldn't even step in the ring. So no, it's not a foregone conclusion that Ali beats him, not by a longshot. I think Foreman, Liston, Norton, Spinks, Frazier could have been beaten by Mike too. What could have been in both cases will never be known but to speak so definitively is foolish.

That’s right! When this fight took place Foreman was in his prime. 25 years old. Ali was no longer in his prime at 32. If Ali had fought Foreman in His prime, he would have knocked Foreman out! And with no Rope a Dope!!

@@gumpy4960 When Ali fought Frazier, Ali was no longer in his prime. I’m not going to compare Ali/Frazier fight to a prime Ali and Prime Tyson. Tyson was good and strong. Ali was good, strong, (not strong looking, but strong) and he had lightening fast speed. He’d frustrate Tyson, wear him out and Ali would have won by points. Tyson said it himself. No one beats Ali.

Ali taught the world that courage and skill prevail over the most ferocious and extreme punching power. He reminded the world why the sport is called “boxing” and not “punching” or “hitting”. But skill without the courage to execute it simply is not enough. Ali brought the world , East -West, North-South, together, if ever so fleetingly. Ali: The Greatest of All Time. I was 14 at the time. Now, so many years later, I appreciate the luck of having experiences history in real time.

I watched it with my dad. He thought ali had magic powers, or hypnotised foreman. But when he saw it again years later, he said ali was avoiding a lot of punches with his skill. But what a lot of people who talk down this fight, saying ali just laid on the ropes, dont like to see is the fact that ali started off in centre of ring taking the fight to foreman. Ali also out muscled foreman, he actually looked bigger, and foreman couldnt shove him around. Alis ability to take fearsome body punches, and return them with lightning combinations aswell, make this top of the pile for me. Physically and mentally ali was in total control. It wasnt even close. No other fighter could have wooped foreman then. Ali the greatest ever
@ballhawk387
@ballhawk387 Год назад
Yeah, I also watched it with my family as a teen. We were all surprised to see him come out, go toe-to-toe with the man who flattened Smokin' Joe, and come out ahead in round 1, rather than dancing and keeping his distance, as one would have expected.. We then sensed we were seeing boxing history unfold right before our eyes.
@ballhawk387

Thing that strikes me watching the fight again is Ali's hand speed, typically beating Foreman to the punch and countering with laser accuracy. This was as sharp as Ali ever got since he came back. Almost the same hand speed as '67, but a different style. Also, the most under-rated finisher in all of boxing. Ali's overhand right was one of the great power punches of any boxer, ever. Time and time again, when he tagged someone with that, they were OUT.

Ali proved time and again that he could take a punch and slip punches better than anybody. I think that no boxer could beat an in shape Ali at his and their peak. As Archie said, if one tatic did not work, Ali had the smarts to find another way to beat his man.

On point. Ali adjusted on the fly when he fought Mildenberger, whose southpaw style was giving Ali lots of problems, until he realized his circling to the left was playing into it. Then he circled to the right, and did the same thing he did to righties.

Whereas Ali went jogging through the streets there to stay in shape and became friends with the people. That is when they came up with the phrase "Ali bumbayé" which meant Ali Kill him. That right hand lead was more important than the rope-a-dope or lose ropes or trash talking. It gave Ali a weapon to neutralize any Foreman offensive. Anytime George got in a rhythm, Ali would snap a right hand lead. It's such a "disrespectful" punch. It confused and frustrated Foreman and set up everything else Ali threw at him. Ali was basically fighting southpaw with a righthanded stance.

I'm not a huge Boxing fan but Mohammed Ali transcended boxing. He provided a role model that inspired his younger opponents. Only one other boxer attained the humility & status of Ali & that was George Foreman. He testified that on the way down Ali had loaded his right but declined to fire it. That gracious act of sparing Foreman the coup De grace "made Ali The greatest fighter of all time", in Foreman's own words. Ali whispered to Foreman when fighting for the WHT when 38, "George you're gonna be The Champ!". Ali wasn't wrong. Although George lost that fight he came back victorious to win the title, people's hearts & earn a place in History alongside The Greatest.

Foreman’s jab is something. George should have used that jab more in the fight.

Awwsome Video! This fight reminds me so much of Fury Vs Wilder 2 + 3. Fury knew Wilder had the power to hurt him, so he made it a point to get his punches off and then clinch/hold Wilder when he finished punching. Ali grabbed Foreman around the neck and head and laid his weight on him, the same way Fury did to Wilder. Smart strategy. I'm about to drop my Foreman vs Ali video here in a few days if anyone's interested.

You just couldn't compare interms of monumental upset though. Because a coming back Ali was a little smaller and older than Foreman. And Ali ko'd him the first time around, where on the other hand Fury was younger and and taller and heavier then Wilder . the order wasn't as tall of a task as Ali and Foreman! The metaphysical Supernatural Muhammad Ali name will always be synonymous with big fights in boxing.

Being in the Ministry like he was for so long of a time made George more amiable and more of a "people person". Also, there was a level of maturity during that time he was a Minister. I was so glad to see him do as well as he did.

Such a great fight. It's not that foreman didn't throw good punches rather Ali soaked them up, dodged and shimmied out of trouble. He picked off points with speed. And finished with a flurry. Ali refused to lose unlike a lot of foreman's opponents.. classic

The one thing I've noticed watching this for the hundredth time is that commentators at the time knew what the hell they were talkin about... had this been done today, they would have said that Ali was dying on the ropes...
