I love the end, where Lita picks up a fan (thrown by an audience member?), stops to fan herself with it, then runs offstage. Let's thank the Japanese for properly documenting the band, which they never got back home!
The Runaways was the first all-girl rock band that truly kicked ass. They went against all rules and did their own thing. Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Sandy West, Lita Ford, Jackie Fox... The true role models for women of this century!
the best singer : Cherie Currie the best solo guitar player : Lita Ford the best bassist : Jackie Fox the best drummer : Sandy West and the best guitar player : Joan Jett THEY ARE THE RUNAWAYS AND WE LOVE THEM !!! vallinera100
Another simple, very catchy song with electric guitars - my favorite kind of rock music. :) The third verse is not on the studio album, and I haven't read it on any lyrics websites. Anybody know the words to it? :)
I've always known of Joan but I found out about this band last year- which is SO sad- i've been missing out, guys. Now the movie will come out too- Joan and Cherrie are still amazing today
Jackie Fox is the Best Runaway --- the most human, fragile, vulnerable and lovely. Ah, Jackie... you're sooooooooo sweet... delicious! The prettiest. The nicest. The most talented. The most human. I love you, Jackie. My Goddess.
Sandy's drumming, Jackie's AWESOME bass line and the way she totally compliments Sandy's playing, Lita's badass solo, Joan's grungy tune and Cherie's random dancing----> EPIC coolness. Sandy putting casually the mike back in place, Joan and Cherie and Cherie in the end, looooool. They seem to be having a blast and that's exactly what playing music is all about imho. Great performance, through and through!
THAT'S A RUNAWAYS MASTERPIECE!... It always makes me cry in melancoly and beauty... Lyrics, music, melody... everything is perfect, as usual in that divine band, but this time, better than ever. Jackie's bass leads the music, giving unity by harmony. Lita and Joan fight in a duel of guitars. Sandy keep the "heartbeat" on her drums beating. And tragic Cherie explodes in passion, telling the stars drama. The girls were specially inspired.
Finally a camera man that showed the beautiful Jackie. What a Rock Chick! She was a great base player as she shows in this performance. Her voice is great. She added so much to the band and she really hasn't got credit she deserves. I lived in the Bible Belt and my state didn't let them play because of I guess they didn't think teenage girls should dress the way they did on stage at times. I would have been the first to buy a ticket on the Front Row.
I am now obsessed with this band I LOE THEM. I wish I was born a 70s kid like the runaways but now music is ruined by the likes of justin bieber and all those crapy people THE RUNAWAYS FOREVER
Go Jackie she iz playing some great bass here, nice bass guitar too, unfortunately this iz the guitar that got broke & caused all the drama :( great clip thanx 4 the post :)
It' always refreshing how 'lost' songs like that can sound brightest and funniest than today's 'work songs' or 'big hits'. That's one more proof about how 70's RAW rock is SUPERIOR. And yeah, you get it: that's why I DON'T HEAR ANY NEW MUSIC since 1994. Fuck off all the new rock. I had enough. I have the best: I have The Runaways.
@caitibaby1 I read her autobiography two and Cherie waxes poetic about how Joan was her bes tfriend, confidant and someone she was sexually attracted to. Moments with Joan, according to her, were "the most satisfying in her young life". She also stated in an interview that she and joan had a sexual relationship, but it wasn't love or anything.
The Runaways kicked wide open the gates for generations of all-girls rock n roll bands; but the most impressive is how radical they are in fit all the needs: they are the FIRST, the BEST, the BIGGER, the YOUNGER, the most BEAUTIFUL, GORGEOUS, CUTTEST and the most TRAGIC. This finished any discussions. Perfect. A band made by God!
The Runaways made the Most Complete Rock n Roll Song EVER: "American Nights" is THE definitive Classical Rock n Roll Theme, even more than "Jail House Rock", "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On", "Satisfaction", "Anarchy in the UK" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The Runaways --- Best Band Ever!
Jackie Fox = Suzi Quatro + Gene Simmons + Steve Harris + Glen Matlock + Paul Simonon + Dave Alexander + Robério Santana + Jennifer Finch. THE BASS GUITAR GODDESS! Period.
@YZEtc Listening to the same live version on 'Flaming Schoolgirls', the second half goes "Breaks my heart, we're so far apart - Cause we're living a double life" - I can't understand the first half though.
@cuteNADA1992 if you read Cherie's autobiography, she doesn't even mention a "special relationship" with Joan. She actually said in an interview that they were just experimenting. I think the Runaways movie played it up for the sake of plot...
She does play great, though Kim Fowley didn't think so in the beginning, so he brought in Nigel Harrison to play bass on their debut album while she took more lessons.
They kick ass. They weren't just damn hot, they had one of the best drummers EVER, some of the best composers, one of the best solists, and a great performance! Nothing's gonna reach them anytime soon!
Totally! Her and that Mockingbird bass. That girl is one seriously banging bass player. It's really too bad that someone did not see her talent and channel it better than Fowley (IMO). I have seen some great bass players over the years and I don't know that I have seen that many as good as her. She was too good......
I agree with you. Most of these live videos focus on Cherie. n Certainly nothing against her, but they could have given the other girls (especially Sandy) a little more camera time.
I'm just "inloved" with this fuckin band!!!! Can't stop listenin them since I was 15 and saw "School days" video, man!! looooovee The Runaways I wish I was now my dad's age ):
Love the three cord middle riff at 2:16. Very simple and very catchy. I also love the closeup of Jackie at 2:08. Go ahead and hurt me. :) Still trying to understand the first line of the third verse. Sounds like "something-something-something in our spare time".
BEST FEMALE SINGERS: Cherie Currie. Tina Turner. Johnette Napolitano. Ann Wilson. Annie Lennox. Chrissie Hynde. Suzi Quatro. Donita Sparks. Marie Friedriksson. Suzi Gardner. Cass Elliott. Grace Slick. Irene Cara. Kim Carnes. Linda Lewis. Kate Bush.
Lots of people did coke back then so what if they did it the musics great. plus many of the greats died from drugs back then Hendrix,Elvis, and Hank Williams(He died earlier then this period)
@Jadeee01 I don't know if you are care I'm replying your old comment but the internet and cell phones aren't the responsible of degeneration of people. I think people started to give a damn about the materials instead of thinking about their lives, spiritual roads, emotions etc... People just closed their eyes for more materials. Many people just closed their eyes I believe. I hope one day people start to open their eyes again before smelling the ashes.
@tinasprettygirl1963 wow, that's amazing. Ever since i heard "Cherry Bomb" when i was 5, I've considered myself an official Runaway. So inspirational, empowering, to me feminist (don't wanna get into it cause it will take me a while to explain my reasoning) and their just down right my idols
