I think that’s why Scorsese’s comments about Marvel not being cinema hit so hard. We do love Marty, and we value his opinion. So hearing that he’s not big on what we like feels like a personal attack, even though it’s obviously not. It’s like if your fun uncle says that he’s not into your style of music. You can’t help but feel a little hurt.

@@purefoldnz3070 No, at the end of the day "Marty" is wrong. Very wrong. He has different opinions on what is cinema and movies. He doesn't know wtf he is talking about and has never watched more than 5 Marvel films, I bet. You're an idiot to even think Scorsese was right about Marvel. He isn't. Go touch some grass.

If we're being honest, the Russos have been 0 for 3 in making non-superhero content while Scorsese has made the Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon and Silence at the same time.

@mrmoviemaniac1 Its not just one person. Others have stated the same. Ridley Scott is another that comes to mind. Ill go one further...cinema appreciation is dying. From all the current "reaction" videos from the brain dead who prefer incessant blabbing over watching, to box office. That KILLERS is beaten by cartoon/toy-based movies like Mario Bros, Transformers...and that FIVE FREDDY thing (Plan 9 has been dethroned as worst movie by that execrable pile of boring dung) is evidence enough.

The internet strikes again… taking silly things too serious and serious things to flippantly.
@jonevansauthor
@jonevansauthor 8 месяцев назад
The internet was wrong, and even if it had been mean spirited, as people say in American films, 'Don't start nothing, won't be nothing.' Lots of people seemed to forget he did lift his chin up and beg for responses to his snobbery. He seemed to forget that Batman is older than he is, and wouldn't be caught dead expressing a gangster fetish.
@habadasheryjones
@habadasheryjones 8 месяцев назад
Batman is older but lets not forget that Batman as we know him and Batman in the 40s through to the 70s was far different. Its not like he came out of the gate a dark gothic figure. He was an average BAM ZOOM out the room superhero made even campier by the Adam West tv show. It was until the 80s that the Batman we all know started to take shape.
@jonevansauthor
@jonevansauthor 8 месяцев назад
@@habadasheryjones I have not. But my point was that by the time Scorcese was old enough to read a comic, Batman and Superman were everywhere, and he shouldn't be sneering at them like they're some new phenomenon. Or, for that matter, as if cinema is some kind of ancient art form of true quality. He was not being sophisticated and erudite, and he's not nearly the filmmaker people overly politely credit him with being. He makes gangster biopics and he films what those are, quite well. Marc, Kevin and the Russos all create much more original content. Perhaps they're not so sophisticated with their cinematography or something, but their films and TV are definitely better. Sorry if that hurts the fefes of any fans of the Mafia murdering people and getting applauded for it but, The Wire, his stuff ain't.
@habadasheryjones
@habadasheryjones 8 месяцев назад
@@jonevansauthor And they used to make penny dreadfuls of pulp Western stories before cinema existed too. Doesn't make it high art simply because it came first. No one remembers Batman as the eat your vegetables hero he was in the 60s. And while cinema might not be ancient it does beat comic books by about 40 years since you're so hung up on being first. Kevin Smith is literal self proclaimed dick and fart joke director. The Russos, for all their intelligent posturing, made an actual pov shot of Tom Holland's asshole for that Cherry film. I've never heard of anything Marc has worked on. These people aren't champions of high art. Thats all fine and well until people like them start making decisions of taste that influence what we all watch. I'm sorry someone speaking truth to the same spandex clad origin stories and 3rd act cgi bum fights upset you so much. Its like I said in another comment. If what Scorsese said wasn't true you wouldn't get so butthurt about it. You'd ignore it and move on. On the subject of Scorsese you really show your ignorance by calling him the "gangster biopic" guy. Its like calling Steven Spielberg the dinosaur guy or calling The Coen Brothers the Frances McDormand guys. Yes he made Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino and Wolf of Wall Street but he has an entire 50 year career of films under his belt that stretch beyond just gangster biopics. Go take a look. Romantic dramas, spiritual dramas, dark comedies, music documentaries, thrillers, children's films and more. Its funny watching you through jump mental gymnastics to ignore over 2 dozen films in his catalog that don't feature gangsters because it favors this strange argument where you try to claim that gangster pictures are no better than superhero films. If I were you I'd just bawk about how gangster films like The Great Train Robbery came before every comic book you've ever known but, again thats too easy. Gangster films reflect real life better than superhero films do. Always have. Just for the fact that they are stories about people and not superhumans. They feature human elements that are missing from modern superhero schlock and thats what this cinema discussion was actually about in the first place.

@@jonevansauthorit’s all well and good to argue what does and doesn’t define cinema but to try to argue that a filmmaker “actually isn’t that good” when the majority of people, from popcorn-eaters to students and masters of the form, generally agree on his command of cinema, is just ignorant at best and dumb at worst. No offense.
@jonevansauthor
@jonevansauthor 8 месяцев назад
@@adrianordonez8800 if he were that good, he wouldn't be out there trying to mock other people's far more popular and enjoyable work by pretentiously claiming it's 'not cinema' whatever that means. He's just a snob. You know how Kevin doesn't bother talking about the films he doesn't like at all? There's a reason for that. He's civilised, and humble and not mean spirited and if he's feeling that sort of thing about something he didn't enjoy, he doesn't come and do a massive review rant about how it's not real cinema because it doesn't mean some nonsensical idea he has about what we should be allowed to enjoy. I agree he puts his films together well for what they are. It even seems the Russos and Kevin think he's good at the directing bit. But I absolutely do not agree he's anything that special, in the same way I don't think that any artists who sneers at other people's work is that special. It's one thing to point at Plan 9 From Outer Space and say it's bad, it's quite another to whine like that about the Marvel films and especially as a director yourself. I did like The Color of Money, and Wolf of Wall Street was tolerable to watch once. The rest of his stuff, is just miserable, horrible and a huge proportion of it glorifies the most unpleasant people, like all those films about The Krays. If I were like him, and I'm not, it would not rate as cinema. Though I might give gongs to some of the crew for cinematography or what have you.

If there wasn't any truth to what Scorsese said then no one would have gotten so butthurt over his comments. Its a fact nowadays that its far easier to get a vapid, by the numbers superhero movies made and shown on big screens than it is to make and show smaller-scale creative films about the actual human condition. Its sad that something poetic and real like Bicycle Thieves or The 400 Blows if released today would get shoved out of theaters by the same tired origin stories and third act cgi messes, repackaged over and over again. Up until the proliferation of MCU films we had variety in theaters. You could go on a Friday and discover a small film that didn't have millions of dollars in its ad campaign being shoved down your throat every two seconds and experience something new and profound instead just wall to wall attempts at blockbuster bombast. I personally can't wait for the superhero bubble to burst and for studios to give smaller films a chance again.
@allanahmooney-ricketson1060
@allanahmooney-ricketson1060 8 месяцев назад
Sorry but the bubble bursting will not bring back small films, most people don’t just go randomly to the cinema anymore, they only go for a specific movie they think is worth 12-20 dollars, otherwise they wait for it to hit streaming. Consumer habits changed
