The sad demise of a once great Scottish football club - Clydebank FC

Kilbowie Park was actually the first "all seater" ground in the UK. The seats were wooden benches on the old terracing, but it still counted!

Enjoyed your video. I'm a Clydebank supporter who enjoyed many happy years watching them play at Kilbowie, a great eee stadium, and as others have said the first all seated in Scotland. Watched Davie Cooper at both his stints at Clydebank, the early years and then when he came back. Saw the Bankies play Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden Park and the Junior Cup Final at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock that you mentioned. Supported them at the various temporary home grounds you mentioned (when ground sharing with Dumbarton and Morton) and as they re-established in the Junior Leagues. Not able to get to current games because of COVID, but the team is doing well in the new West of Scotland League and still have dream of seeing them work their way back to the highest leagues in the Scottish structure. Great memories. 🙂

I signed for Clydebank the same night as Davie Cooper, we beat Partick Th 3-1. Jack Steadman asked us to wait upstairs from the changing sheds, it was a Monday/ Tuesday night ?? Davie was a fantastic player and showed his ability from Day one. The club should have been better administrated.

Grew up a stone's throw away from Kilbowie,and still live in Clydebank.Its a town that desperately needs our club back as a professional team.I seen everyone there in the 80s and 90s growing up from Celtic to Rangers Aberdeen,Hibs Hearts them all.Plenty of millionaires from Clydebank that could help such as Duncan Bannatyne,The Wets ,Kevin Bridges to name a few.

Great video..I have so much affinity to Clydebank as their demise so mirrors my own club Wimbledon's. Owner selling ground to retailers, no re-location plan, mooted moves to Dublin, supporters boycotting, new record low attendance, another club involved in the injustice..however both clubs fans have stayed loyal and reformed their clubs and both now have new Stadiums to build a future on..a bright future

Sad about Clydebank, and sad about the untimely death of Davie Cooper. He was by far the best player I ever watched in a Rangers shirt. Most significantly he was just a humble lad from Hamilton who shunned the limelight. He could have played at the top level in England, but preferred playing for Rangers, and living in his hometown. Legend.

Good video. You should look up the history of Drumchapel Amateurs in the 70s & 80s! David Moyes dad was heavily involved and produced a lot of known players

When I was a kid growing up watching football in the 70s all the super stars were Scottish and that’s a fact, that’s why England dominated Europe, we didn’t need any foreigners, Scottish football has been in decline for a while now, don’t think it’s just Clydebank, Leeds fan 👍

Clydebank FC has had several manifestations, with big gaps in between. The 1965-2002 Clydebank was the one you were talking about at the beginning, which played at Kilbowie Park. The original Clydebank FC existed between 1914 and 1931 and played at Clydeholm, which was quite a big stadium just across the main road from Holm Park. It was also a greyhound track, and continued as that after the football club folded. A set of big tower blocks was built on the site when Clydeholm was demolished and those, in turn, have now also been demolished. I don't know what will now be built on the Clydeholm site, presumably more housing but not tower blocks. The present Clydebank played the 2018-19 season at Maryhill FC while Holm Park was completely revamped, which was badly needed. It had previously been arguably the most depressing dump in junior football. In particular, two drops of water was enough to turn the pitch into a quagmire. There isn't much between Holm Park and the Clyde and at high tide the river can be higher than the pitch, so it wants in there. There is now an artificial pitch as well as new terracing and the quagmire problem has been solved.

Great video, thank you. I was a regular at Kilbowie during Davie Cooper’s playing days. He could absolutely annihilate opponents at times and the fans used to just chuckle at Coop’s latest victim. He was always destined for the top. Good to see the Hibbie (Glenhead Park) in the video too

Virtually the whole of this video is a reminder of my youth and early twenties as a player (queens park, clyde, albion rovers)... i played against clydebank a number of times, at kilbowie park... one of my mates played for Dumbarton (before the ground-share with the bankies)... ie tommy mcadam (who went on to play centre-forward for celtic, and his brother, colin, played for rangers... rip big cad)... i moved away from scotland in my mid-twenties so to hear of the decline of the bankies is a shock... good video, thanks for making it

Drumchapel Amateurs have had the likes of Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Walter Smith, Archie Gemmill and Jim Forrest play for them. They actually have quite a good history for such a small club

Clydebank were promoted to the Premier Division in 1977. A covered plastic-seated stand was built, which was funded by selling star player Davie Cooper for £100,000 to Rangers. To avoid having to apply legislation affecting stadium safety, the club installed wooden benches that reduced the capacity to 9,950. This was below the 10,000 limit at which the legislation started to apply and technically made Kilbowie the first all-seater stadium in the United Kingdom.

Great memories jumping off that train to play my football, part-time then 2yrs full-time at Clydebank.. So many great memories.. Thanks footy Adventures. 😎👍

The Duntocher Glenhead park,which is known as the Hibee,is in Clydebank aswell.Any games that got played there we watched from the grass hill opposite the stand.Thanks for the video pal.

I saw Davie Cooper play @ Ibrox in 1986, although I'm blind as a bat (shortsighted, & didn;t have glasses to wear) and I didn't know much about Rangers (I was on holiday from Australia) I could spot Cooper unmistakably by his unbelievable dribbling skills.

So happy Scotland qualified! Just a shame Northern Ireland couldn't join as it would've been nice to have all four Home Nations at a tournament for the first time since 1958.

I was fortunate enough to see David Cooper play for Clydebank in the 70s. I remember as a wee boy standing pitch side at Kilbowie when he roared down the wing, what an inspiration he was and such a great player. Never to be forgotten.

Loved the video and grew up in Clydebank and started going when a pal was Manager a few years ago and went back for the Cup run 2 seasons ago. Gleanhead Park in Clydebank though, not outside - in a wee place called Duntocher. Shame no footage or pictures shown of the old Kilbowie Park though, would have been a nice touch Sam albeit you like to show places where you are in vision.

Been to kilbowie early 80s n seen Clydebank in their junior format too against bonnyrigg rose still got a good support can still remember their clubhouse behind the goals

Was at Kilbowie in 1967 when Clydebank played a very strong Chelsea team twice in six weeks. The first game finished 2-2 and I remember Osgood scored. Chelsea won the second game quite easily, 4-1 or 4-2

I watched Davie Cooper at Kilbowie .What a brill player. i think it was 1976 or 77 . The Bankies beat Rangers in the cup and sure enough.. The Gers bought him. they had reinforced glass in the social club cause the Baw would have smashed the windies. i remember the cheers as people in the club ducked if it got to close at speed. ..what a great ground right in the centre of kilbowie road and the Rangers bus left from the Atlantis pub only 2 hunner yards away . lmao,.. any way good memories

After a merger of Clydebank Junior FC with League club East Stirlingshire they played as East Stirlingshire Clydebank F.C. (Season 1964-65). They de-merged after one season and played in the Scottish League in their own right .

A video everyone should enjoy . I went to a Clydebank v St Mirren midweek game and I was amazed to see that one of the ends was a social club ! A real shame the Bankies went under like another famous Clydeside club, Third Lanark.

Eamon Dunphy ex Manchester United and Millwall Irish international was involved in that ridiculous idea of relocation to Dublin instead of putting his own town first and supporting one of the 6 Dublin clubs.It drew fury from fans here in Dublin as well as Clydebank and was a non runner.

Great video. One fact that you got wrong was that the match against east Stirling with 29 fans was mainly made up of Clydebank fans as I was one of them.

My only visit to Kilbowie was in 1992, watching Cowdenbeath get beat off the Bankies 3-1 in the Scottish cup. Quite liked the ground.

No, Glenhead Park is IN Clydebank. Duntocher is part of Clydebank. Drumchapel isn't, it's in Glasgow, but they don't actually play in Drumchapel.

I can't be sure but I think my old man played for clydebank or Clyde way way back late 30s his name was Norman nick name was blondie he was from Baileston Glasgow my gran was a member of the clydeside reds party which caused the family grief by the authorities for protesting over poverty

In the ' 70 s we were a great team with fantastic players ......Jim Fallon , Gallacher etc . The Steedmans put them on the map though their subsequent actions were dubious . Many a game I watched in those halycon days standing and then sitting in Kilbowie . I remember a great cup tie against Celtic that had to be abandoned with us well on top at half time (conspiracy theories abound ).Really miss the Bankies .

Glenhead Park is IN Clydebank, not "near" it. It's in Duntocher, which is part of Cydebank. Drumchapel, however, is in Glasgow, not Clydebank. It was once bigger than you see it now. What you're seeing on the other side of the pitch is very overgrown and crumbling concrete terracing, now returned to nature. It could once, I guess, have accommodated 2,000 or so people.

Fun fact, the rock band ACDC supported Clydebank... as did the the pop ban Wet, Wet Wet ... who both sponsored them at one time.

Back the 80s, I used to get liftys into the game from strangers. In the 90s I used its derelict stadium as a alcoholic drug den. Great memories.

You should look into the Airdrieonians story that predated the demise of Clydebank FC and led to the purchase of Clydebank.
