He saved kings landing... And got branded a kingslayer and despised for it by the very people he tried to save. I think some of his actions are terrible but... He's seen what doing good did for him. It got him hated. I can see how that may cause someone to lose all faith, particularly as he was so loyal to Cersei who used and cheated on him cause her Tyrion and Tywin know how mad Aerys was and that Jamie broke his vows to save 1 million people. No one outside of his abusive family/lover except Tyrion would ever treat him well, and the common folk and everyone else wouldn't have believed him and that's why he stayed quiet. The common folk were not aware of the mad kings plans but Jamie was his personal kingsguard and Tywin his hand and best friend. Jamie's done bad things but at the end of the day he still saved over a million human beings knowing what he'd be branded as. As a victim of a mentally abusive relationship I can see why he goes back to Cersei, aka who is his personal poison and brand of heroin. She's all he's got and all he's known and he's addicted to her through the traumabond.

Upon hearing Rhaella's cries Jamie steps forward and says "We are sworn to protect the Queen as well," but the response he gets is; "We are," Darry allowed, "but not from HIM." This scene always makes me a bit more forgiving of Jamie's arrogance. He later makes a statement about "the white cloak soiled me, not the other way around" and I believe it is true to his character. When he joined the Kingsguard as a teenager he expected that the brotherhood would help him grow into a man he could be proud of. But he was taught/forced to ignore his own compassion in the face of blatant evil by his supposed "betters." It's really kinda heartbreaking. Jamie had the potential to be as honorable as Ned Stark ... But he was born a Lannister.

Grief and Jealousy. There was no sign of madness at first, it was only induced everyday by the accumulated problems he had-He and Rhaella's problem with Childbirth and his jealousy with Tywin. This two problems are linked together. Aerys, though charismatic, was very egotistical. He was friendly, cheerful and easy to get along with at first. (that's why he and Tywin became friends in the first place) but like any other person, there's a dark side to him-he's sort of narcissistic and his ego was easily bruised. But this dark side of him was just like 20% of the time. When he was crowned, his egotistical mannerisms increased. He thought as the king, he viewed himself above the others which includes his friends (Tywin) His ego was easily bruised when Tywin was kind of “doing better in life” more than him-Tywin married for love (Which Aerys didn't have) and Tywin wielded power in a way that Aerys both admired and envied. Everyone respected the young fierce lion for being courageous, shrewd and ruthless. In short, Tywin earned a genuine respect and life which Aerys coveted. It really doesn't go well when Joanna Lannister (The woman Aerys lusted over) marries Tywin. The bruise on his ego was made even deeper when Tywin and Joanna marriage was striving when Aerys and Rhaella was struggling with their own. Both had their own faults-Aerys was willful and he did whatever he wanted, including siring many mistresses. In Rhaella's case, despite her pliant nature, she didn't bother to go against her husband as she didn't care or love him enough to meddle. (Though she rejected turning her ladies-in-waiting into whores) To them, love and marriage was nothing more but a business deal. Aerys will put a child on Rhaella and that's it. It was nothing warm and caring like Tywin and Joanna's relationship.

It only got worse when Rhaella had trouble with childbirth yet Joanna was able to give Tywin twin children. Aery's ego suddenly took a heavy hit. As a King, it was his primary duty to keep the royal bloodline alive and the fact that his wife, lost children one after the other, heavily put him under a lot of pressure and frustration. It's like Henry the eighth and Catherine of Aragon all over again. The loss was too great that it caused Aerys frustration. Frustration is the feeding ground of extreme negative emotions and this is when Aerys slow descent to madness began. To heal his wounded ego, he tried to undermine Tywin-berating him with every chance he gets. When he fails to shame or undermine him, this makes Aerys hate Tywin even more.

It was even mentioned in the book, that years of incest and breeding dragons and other beasts resulted in Targaryens often giving birth to deformed monster-like babies that would die soon after being born. I don't know why everyone forgets to mention this fact. Most of children that died at very young age, was infact born with lizzard like features, bat wings, or reptile faces. Only a few would be born as humans and survive. It's almost like they are hiding these facts to make us 'like' Targaryens more. :D Even Danys kid was monster like, that's why it did not survive in the book. She believed it was the witch that cursed her, but it was simply her genes. Cuz dany had very strong Targ gene in her.

I was actually so sad they didn't include Purple eyes at least :( Show really sugar glazed the whole Targaryen lore, like Dany having no hair and burned skin after she hatched dragons. Show would make much more sense, not to mention, even in GOT, they mention that there are ''Monsters'' in the Valyria, and we see them briefly.

If anything he is only the ice part in the Song of ice and fire and even that is arguable because the Night King could very well be that part too.

It really wasn't though. Most of the time it was because the mother was impregnated when she was too young, which ruins the body quickly and results in much higher risks of miscarriages (especially when she's forced to get pregnant again immediately after, without letting her body rest). Old Valyrians practiced sibling marriage for many generations and didn't have these kinds of problems.

@@LoreenaMcK The World of Ice and Fire. It's a beautifully illustrated "history" book, it has westerosi history up until Robert's Rebellion (though with less detail than F&B) and a good amount of stuff of the rest of the world outside of Westeros.

Nope. Jamie tried so hard to protect Rhaella. He was close to Aerys as his personal kingsguard and he felt terribly for Rhaella. He tried to speak up but that would only make Aerys more paranoid and abusive to Rhaella. He was the king. the only way was to kill him, which Jamie eventually did when he had to to save kings landing and he was forced to become a kingslayer. Jamie wanted to protect Rhaella but Aerys had so much crazy control that Jamie was powerless. As someone said it's their job to protect the queen but the king owns her, he can do as he likes sadly. Jamie tried but he had no power except witnessing Aerys growing more deranged and scary and being powerless to act. This is actually what made me think Jamie is a good man deep down. He was the only one who was willing to give up his honour and be branded a backstabbing kingslayer and despised by life by the very people he'd save. The people who knew nothing about how mad Aerys truly was nor his plans to burn them all. Jamie stepped up.

In my opinion, in the ''song of ice and fire'' phrase, the ice stands for the White Walkers and the fire for dragons. In contrast to snow, which has a meaning of innocense and purity, ice is menacing and dangerous. The phrase is about the war between good and evil which will determine the fate of the world. It's way beyond Jon's lineage or Starks and Targaryens. So, since Daenerys is the one who is born (pure Targaryen) and then reborn again (through Drogo's pyre and birth of her dragons) by fire, she is more the ''prince who was promised'' than Jon will ever be.

It's actually the Prince that was promised (a promised heir so to speak) who will be born admits salt and smoke (Dragonstone) to wake dragons from stone (Dany's hatched three dragons from stone) and it's said that his is the song of ice and in fire. In other words the chosen one's destiny is centered around ice and fire and all the things that go with it; hence why in the HotU the Undying told Dany that she must: "drink of the cup ice drink from the cup from the fire." The Prince's story is essentially about good vs evil, life vs death, dragons vs the others. But even if you want go with the blood angel, Daenerys also has first man's blood in her which essentially is what Stark blood is all about. Her great-grandmother was Betha Blackwood the wife of Aegon V and after their union the next two generations of Targaryens were all married to their siblings all the way down to Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys. So in essence Dany is actually more "half" ice and fire than Jon is. And by the way House Blackwood is also the family Bloodraven inherited his powers from.

I heard that as well, that Tyrion’s mom had an affair with Aerys and Tyrion was actually a Targaryen who would be the third dragon rider. But nothing came of that theory. It’s also hinted because of Tyrion being able to calm the dragons down quite easily and when he freed Danys imprisoned dragons, they did not attack him. Also would make more sense why Tywin is always harsher on Tyrion because he didn’t believe he was his biological son... idk.
