And YES, it actually IS a matter of culture, otherwise, how come people know it WILL affect their health in the long run, yet still keep working that way? @johncarter4956
@johncarter4956 3 года назад
And this is exactly why ending a manga is one of the most challenging and stressful task. On one hand, these mangaka would finally get a free break where they could get a full sleep, party, or returm to family. On the other hand, you also have to end the story in the most satisfying way possible for fans. To do that, you would need to brainstorming and draw your part as best as you could. Which mean even more stress, more lack of sleep and more malnutrition.
@juztadice8000
@juztadice8000 3 года назад
then some fans would be bashing why the ending sometimes doesn't meet their expectations
@karakurie
@karakurie 3 года назад
Well, I think that's a common misunderstanding about writing. You need to have a well structured plot and very high level writing skills in order to write a good story. It has nothing to do with your health. People sacrifice it to write better stories, but it has no correlation to whether or not your story is good its just hussle culture. It feels like the story it better because I suffered for it.
@margarete5920
@margarete5920 3 года назад
Nad don't forget ending your story might means ending your contract which means no money, or your editor rushed you to make another series/story once it ends
@kaizu8326
@kaizu8326 3 года назад
@@karakurie that's actually true. I'm not a writer, but I'm an artist, and there's this saying that I learned. "Learn how to choose your battles". The thing is, you don't have to risk your health to craft a good story, or to make a good artwork. I know that's easy for me to say, but there are many shortcuts that can be done. You don't have to fight every battle presented at you, you can just choose the ones that will work the best and work on it, so like in art, put detail and more effort on that the viewers can see the most, like areas of light, or the face, and just leave things that aren't gonna be seen empty. Or in writing, just write the characters you wanna write, and flesh out parts of the plot that are important. You don't have to worry too much about the backstory of a character that wouldn't even make any impact
@q.8965
@q.8965 3 года назад
@@karakurie That's a vast oversimplification of writing a large form comic as a mangaka though. It's true that anyone can write a great story with years / decades of free time to think, create, edit edit edit, etc. But these authors don't have time to write / draw out the entire decades long story before they release it (usually just a huge overview of the plot), as you can't predict if it will even get approved or canceled before the 1st chapter. From there, things inevitably change over the course of the story and shift in ways not even the best author can predict (unless it's a really basic, easy story). There's also expectations of how much satisfying plot each week to give readers, and they complain if a chapter is too short or boring (even though as a whole in the story, it's fine), or if one little mistake slipped past you, and it snowballs from there. You then have to adjust each week. And as each week goes on, over the years, you get a little more tired every day. And that's not even the drawing of it. That's all to say, it's not hustle culture. Most of it is meeting the very rough demands of the audience who consume manga. And if you say, "Just don't give in to their demands," then they'll just read a different story and your story gets cancelled in 3 weeks.

As an Asian, it's disappointing to see how many people illegally consume Manga yet have the audacity to complain and nitpick. Usually in Physical Volumes, correction in Art and dialogues is done but I see every week people just bashing and comparing Mangakas' art and insulting them. People need to understand that every Mangaka is different. Not everyone draws like Inoue Sensei, not every story I same yet they insult creators by comparing them. I loved working in what I love tho, I literally almost died by work. I immigrated to France, I feel more human my life became BUT my annual salary got 4 time less than Japan. However I’ve also seen lots of non Japaneses who work more than us. @@CatsEverywhere33 thanks first of all. When you work over 15h by day for weeks, there is no difference between health issue and mental issue. It’s like once you put yourself outside of work (see your friend for ex.), people around you notice “hey you all right?” cuz your behavior becomes totally out of social standard like ADHD or depressive person. The problem in Japan is there is still this mentality “working harder is better as human if you take some rest you are lazy and inferior as human”. So everybody’s afraid of not working if not the society or your family accuse you for being a bad person. In France there is other problems lol As Asian male, I get discriminated like every day and my friends aside, I’m single with no family so really alone all by myself. I'm not a manga artist but there was this one time in my English class, we had a project on creative writing that requires making a short comic. So being me, I was excited to try drawing a manga. The deadline was in three weeks time. The first week I spent the first three days procrastinating then the next four creating a plot and choosing between two of which the best I've thought of. The second week was spent making sketches for each scene (no matter how much you love drawing, this is straining piece of work) and the first three days of week 2, I only made 2 pages (and I had to *resketch because it got blown by the wind and was stepped on and torn by my dogs* because I work outside), the next two days I made five and I wasn't even halfway through. So on the first week I had a weekend break but since the third week is nearing and so is the deadline, I fucked it and sketched all way from morning til 4:00 am and would wake up at 6am to continue on week 2. I still had to finish sketching few more pages so I decided to tell myself I need to finish the sketches on day one of week three. So I did. And when I thought it was over. . . it wasn't. I had to ink all 14 pages with *every single detail* and it took me six days, (the last few chapters became sloppy) and I wasn't even done with making a cover art for it, I was planning on using water colour but since I haven't yet started on my other modules, I decided to make the cover tomorrow (i.e day 7 of week 3). . . Day 7 of week 3 came, it was 5:00 am, the sun was already rising but I wasn't halfway through 13 subjects. So I worked and worked on them. Nightfall came and since I haven't slept a night and had no proper sleep days prior, I decided to sleep since I was really drained and set my alarm to 3:00 am so I can begin with the cover art. I did not wake up. . . 8:00 am, Monday, the supposed deadline of the project. I was being shaken up by my mother awake asking where my modules were so she could go and submit them. I swear every single blood cells in my body stopped circulating and froze cold. The project wasn't even bound together yet. . . I bolted u from the bed and rushed towards my workspace in my room and frantically reordered them into chronological order and stapled them, I thought fuck cover art, I'mma just put a paper and write "Creative writing project Gr.8 : Comic Strip" and that's what I did. My mother took then and went to the school. The next week later, results of the three week modules were returned and it included my project. I earned half the full marks, that would've been alright since I did become sloppy due to rushing it and didn't make a cover but the thing is, my teacher added a note that said, *"I said comic strip not a book. Great plotline btw."* I'm not really mad but. . . yeah. Appreciate the effort people. It's offending.

@@motociin It's on paper and I don't really post anything on the internet (^_^;) I can tell what it's about though? The theme given was : ‘Compassion towards one who is on the verge of life and death’ Astra was a fae princess who ran away from home (and the decision of having her marry a fae prince from another kingdom for support) to become a spy against the enemy (w/c are witches) so she could return home and lead the army herself. She disguised herself as a witch and was accepted in a coven. Then she meets the coven heir, Fennel. Fennel is apathetic and like every witch hated the existance of fae creatures. Not knowing that Astra was a fae, she becomes a close friend. One day, one of Fennel's close warriors become suspicious of Astra and finds out that Astra is indeed a fae, Astra ends up killing the witch in self defense, where the rest of the coven could scent Astra as a ‘witch-killer’ and find out her true identity. So now, out of cruelty, the coven leader (Fennel's brother) decided to have Fennel accept the right of passage for the high ranking witches by which it was killing a coven killer as revenge for the dead fellow coven. On the day of her execution though, Fennel couldn't do it. She can't kill Astra (*compassion towards someone in a life and death situation*). So she ended up giving Astra her witch's-cloak to hide her scent when she escapes (mind you Astra was whipped and was presented to the coven naked for execution, which was also the reason Fennel gave her the cloak). Fennel ends up becoming a coven-traitor at that moment as she let Venatrix (her dragon) take Astra and escape. Fennel distracted her brother by confronting him into a fight. . . Fennel dies in her place. -end The rest is to be continued (never😅) (the next part is actually the second plotline I was considering illustrating) Okay bye.

"Selfish few" is right. The japanese comic industry needs to grow a soul. Readers will always buy their favorite comic even if it comes biweekly... hell even just monthly. Readers of popular novel series sometimes wait a whole year for the next book to get published.

Add to my previous comment..... publishing manga more doesnt make the manga great. If the mangaka publish more and the content is not good then there is no point in buying it. Manga is more than just a form of entertainment. It is a true art form that captures the imagination and inspires creativity. The intricate details of the characters, the vivid landscapes, and the emotions conveyed in each panel are a testament to the skill and talent of the artists who create them. The combination of storytelling, illustration, and design in manga is truly unparalleled. The artists are able to transport readers to new worlds and bring characters to life in a way that is both powerful and captivating. Manga has the ability to evoke strong emotions and leave a lasting impact on its readers. It has the power to inspire and influence generations of artists and storytellers. In short, manga is not just a book, it is a masterpiece of art that deserves to be appreciated and celebrated. Despite the dark side of the industry, there’s still more passionate authors debuting almost every year, even though they know the stress it causes they’re still willing to keep writing just off of passion alone, and I respect that. And regarding the statement of manga authors not having control over when the series ends, that was mainly an issue for extremely popular series in Weekly Shonen magazines, like Fairy Tail, Naruto. Recently they’ve been more willing to end series on the authors accord, good example is Kimetsu no Yaiba, it ended with only 4 year run but is now one of Jump’s most popular series in years, and My Hero Academia, a series that you would usually expect to go on forever like Naruto, is in it’s final arc, even Jujutsu Kaisen and Tokyo Revengers, series that’re blowing up at the moment, are ending pretty soon (Jujutsu Kaisen was stated to end in another year or 2, and Tokyo Revengers is currently in it’s final arc as well.) And when it comes to to scheduling, you have an alternative to Weekly Jump, Jump Plus, which manga artist has a more flexible work schedule, being able to work at their own pace. So when it comes to the current state of the manga industry, I feel that it’s slowly becoming less as stressful as it was back then. But anyways good video! Sorry for the wall of text lol.

I think most of these mangaka learn their lesson from their predecessor. If your series are popular, end it as quickly as you can or it would drag on forever. Especially if that series got commercial and sponsors company supporting them. One of the most curious case of this is Aoyama Gosho's Detective Conan. That anime are dubbed "National Anime" and got all sorts of sponsors like TMS Entertainment who aired the animated series, the Japanese government whom support it since a large-scale manga support program from the 90s, and a lots of toys and game company who sold merchandise off it. As a result, he can't end the manga series and the anime are dragging on for 25 years now and the anime reach its 1000th episode just this January.

I respect their passion for the subject, but I don't respect their desire to overwork themselves at all. These people trying to make it big are dysfunctional and desperate, and this lifestyle shouldn't be supported. In California, In 2010 There was a 19 year old girl from japan in our 3d fundamental class, the widows are tinted as a way to help us loose track of time. While me and the Americans would knock off the labs early she'd always remain behind on her screen just toiling away, Even when assignments were complete 🤷🏽‍♀️ sometimes she'd come with a sleeping bag and sleep in the labs. Till One day, she just didn't come, which was such a foreign notion to us that we stopped working and asked questions, we later found out that she went temporarily BLIND!!, 😳 We didn't even know it was possible to SPRAIN YOUR EYES. I don't understand what pushed her but all I know is , where ever she is today, she has my respect because all who majored STILL talk about it in their marriages and in work places... She left an impact with just her work ethic alone. And yes of course she was the best of us but even after scooping that title she had no reason to work how she did.

The problem is they didn't make good anime. They love to make angry kid to become hero instead using intelligence or cleverness. So it will late to deliver to audiences if they focus on artwork and logic instead they might create artwork faster. Example they think about some st upid like the enemy attack hero and hero lose figures and yet hero still ask who are you? How do you do? What is your name? It take plenty of time to think about this scenes instead real life logic so it will late to deliver to audiences. Japan love phycopas theory instead logic. Hero got beaten and nearly die,mostly die but instead of being die the hero awaken power and continue his quest so it take a lot of time to think how to pull that scenes off in order to make audiences believe it will happen. Manga and anime delivery late is not about hard work bull s hit like this channel said. It all about their psychopath theory put into anime.

I know that the whole "Tiger Mom" thing is a stereotype and can be offensive, but I have generally seen that children from Asian households turn out to be brighter, more hard working and generally great citizens.

I worked on a Webtoon for a competition once. Since my partner and I entered a little late, we were pressed for time. I was invested in the story my writer had, but I also had very high expectations for my art that we simply didn't have time for. In the end, I was drawing the second I woke up to the second I slept, 15 hours a day. We barely made the first episode, as we pulled all nighters as the week came to an end. Anyone who knows the format knows that Webtoons are usually colored. Although I was confident in the artwork for the first half of chapter one, I had to cut it down drastically, to the point where I hated looking at it. It's an eyesore. I'm only glad that my readers didn't tear me apart for it anymore than I did. I'm trying not to type so much, but we got episode 1 out, and immediately began scripting episode 2. Now I knew what episode 1 was like, so I adjusted my art for the second episode. It wasn't nearly as nice as the first half of 1, but it wasn't miserable like the second half. The workload was still the same, however. We never finished it. By the end of it, my back was in excruciating pain for a good while, which I feel I haven't fully recovered from since i get a small pain if I draw for too long. My wrist also stiffens and burns if i draw for too long as well. Despite all this, I am in love with drawing and writing. So I still plan to create. I plan on starting another webtoon soon, but this time at my own pace (I'm thinking monthly as opposed to weekly) and I will also be writing my own story. What i primarily want people to take away from this is that it is definitely dangerous to work under such a short window of time. Since I have then improved a lot artistically, mentally, and physically, I feel like I can take it easier the second time around. If you love it more than anything, give it a shot!

i’m a webtoon canvas creator and i happen to pass by this comment. At first, it wasn’t really my intention to pursue webtoon until i learned about the monetization program brought by webtoon itself so i decided to go for it and i want to share my thoughts about this experience since if you want to try to pursue a career to become a webtooner there are hidden facts behind the curtain. as glorious as it sounds, life in webtoon is very similar to what i just saw in the video except you don’t have a publisher because the deadline is what’s making you push your health to the limit. if u don’t plan to monetize your project you can really take it easy (no deadlines whatsoever) but if you’re looking for rewards such as you get paid for drawing, you will need to reach a certain amount of follows and views and to get there you will try harder and harder, that’s how it becomes stressful and unbearable to live with. There are so many things more to share but this post is getting long. You can ask me if you want to learn more stuff about what’s going on in the webtoon world.

We somehow know that, even with the ones that appear in the story fleetingly, if we were allowed into their story, a LOT would be revealed. And yet he had to deal with people whining and even disrespecting him because he saw his vision to the end instead or writing their fanfic end.
