The best piece of advice I ever got was "stop drawing what you think you see, draw what you actually see" because I had a bad habit of looking at a reference and then ignoring the reference because I say in my head "I know what an eye looks like" and that prevents you from pulling in new information because you're only ever referring back to the information already in your head.

Exactly what I’ve been doing, I’ve been drawing BASICALLY everyday for the past five years( at least 4 times a week) and I was always like “ why am I not getting better? I’m drawing a lot and filling up sketchbooks a lot” but the whole reason I was progressing so slowly is because I was JUST drawing I wasn’t studying anatomy or anything like that. Exactly, I've filled entire sketchbooks following instructions from collegiate drawing classes, absolute garbage. Zero knowledge despite studying every day. I have major depressive disorder and for the past year I've been struggling with the fact that I couldn't find joy in drawing anymore. I think it was because I couldn't accept that I was a noob. I really wanted to be good right away but my depression also hindered me from being able to take steps forward. Then one good day I tried drawing again. And I said to myself, I won't be hard on myself. This is just the first attempt of maybe a thousand, and that's okay. I'm drawing more consistently now. And I've been making slow but steady progress. But most importantly, I started enjoying drawing again. And I don't beat myself up when I don't create a masterpiece on the first try. I'm warning you of the journey ahead. There will come a time when you will feel like you've stagnated, like there's no progress; you're not getting better. The only solution is to keep going. It's going to be frustrating but you will find results with perseverance. My advice, when you arrive there, is to critically evaluate what you are purposefully avoiding and do that. Don't like drawing buildings or mechs? Draw them. Don't want to do master studies? Suck it up butter cup. Maybe a mentor or online class will be helpful. I believe in you, dude. Art is hard. This video got randomly recommended to me and I just want to say you're doing great! There are so many things to learn in art, and with the internet now allowing us to constantly compare ourselves to others, it can feel overwhelming. But taking it one day at a time and seeking out resources for learning like you are is exactly what you should be doing. If you're still focusing on anatomy, I recommend the Morpho anatomy books. There's, like 9 or 10 of them, and they cover a wide variety of anatomical subjects like muscles, hands/feet, wrinkles and fat folds, clothing draping, etc., and you can generally get them for fairly cheap or even free from some places. Keep it up! :)

I have to say you deserve to be complimented for your drawings of the body in movement. I'm a trained dancer and you've such a good eye for what we call 'line'. So many artists (even professional ones) don't actually pull it off to the dancer's eye. We can tell the small mistakes that turn a portrait into a not-quite-believable picture. -But you can do it.- Even in your early work you seem to have an innate understanding of where the fulcrum of the body is, how the weight is distributed down into the ground and how the limbs work around that fulcrum. It's a very cool talent. Good luck!

Hey man, can I give you some advice? Follow the fundamentals. To learn how to draw you need to follow an order. Of course, not a checklist to sign one at a time, because one thing complements the other. You want to start doing it now poses and body, but for that there is something missing first. Poses need gestures, anatomy, perspective and shapes. So, I recommend that you start studying line, shapes and perspective. I saw that you were discouraged with perspective, but you were drawing so well. So, I recommend starting with these. And also dynamic sketching. Which combines all three of these. I swear, if you do this, your drawings will BE MUCH, MUCH BETTER. There's a playlist from Peter Han about dynamic. I swear, It's worth it, man

To everyone who just started their art journey and who are still going, please never give up on it! I cannot stress this enough, no matter how bad your art looks right now, just keep going! I promise you progress does happen, you might not see it but one day you will make something and feel so proud of yourself. I've been drawing since I was a kid and I'm still learning how to do poses, so sometimes you might not be able to get to your goal immediately, but you will definitely see the difference as you go! I wasn't any better, but now if I compare my art to the ones I drew when I started learning, I feel so proud of how far I've come. The only rule in art is, never compare yourself to someone else and never stop drawing, you can and should take breaks but don't stop. My best friend, who also loved art and was actually very good at realistic potraits, stopped drawing and gave up on it, no matter how much I told her to continue, she didn't listen, and now I can't show my art to her, because I know she compares herself with me. She feels bad she isn't as good (I swear I'm not trying to brag) even now I tell her she can start and she can get better, but she isn't willing to listen. So, that's why to everyone out there, please don't give up. You WILL get better, more than you think, and I'm 100% sure of that :)

I love that you have to make bad art to make good art. Because if you make nothing, theres nothing in this world you can compare that nothing to. Have a great art journey and make more art! You're gonna look back on it and think it's bad but that just means improvement!

Why is your art progress journey so good! Like major props to you, you studied a lot of stuff most newbie artists wouldn’t and knew to study perspectives and different things! Keep it up man I think if you keep going with this type of studying that is intentional and skill based you’ll improve majorly. No hate to other artists tho of course I just notice a lot of beginners tend to not think of improving as an intentional thing like this, where they genuinely study things like prospective snd such. And just tend to think if they draw their ocs or fanart everyday or regularly they’ll improve. Which is not how it works improving in art means actually doing studies like you did in this video! And to quote you “to my credit I really was trying to work on my weaknesses.” Artists just starting out with the intention of improving, ya’ll get that quote tattooed on your brain please. Edit: HOLY HECK IF THIS IS HOW DEDICATED YOU ARE TO IMPROVING YOUR ART BY ACTUALLY DOING STUDIES AND DRAWING A LOT THEN IN PART TWO YOUR GONNA BE A MASTER

Hi! Great video! It looks a lot like my art journey. One thing that really helped me was switching to better quality paper. I didn't think it would be that big of a deal, but honestly I saw huge jump in my ability just by using more dense paper. 👌🏽

I am 16, I've been drawing since like 4. Sometimes I feel so frustrated. I feel like I suck at it. I have 18 subjects to study at school. I am studying art to apply an animation university. I am also making a comic on webtoon to improve my skills but I am so frustrated by all these things. I heard people say that you can redraw one of your old pieces to feel that you draw better but no! Because the old one was definetly better😂. This video inspired me a lot. I just stopped drawin half an hour ago, then I found this video when I was scrolling. Thanks for the inspiration.😊

You've come a long way !!! Your progress is fantastic. You do a lot of study and seems to have fun. I have no doubt that you will progress even further. Don't feel guilty about stopping for a month or so, sometimes a break help you digest what you learned. Try to draw without reference more. It's cool to have a super technical side, but don't forget the creative side. Rendering is hard and take years to pin down. If you want to progress on that part, I have some suggestions/tips that worked for my art students. For color : -gouache painting, using only CMYBW is the best way to see improvement. It is a super frustating exercice at first, be prepared. --> you will learn a lot about color mixing / 15 min digital sessions. Choose a picture, with no color filter if possible, set a 15min timer. Now try to replicate it whithout colorpicking. You can do a lot in a short time !

Here is what I heard from another video and comment, "As long as the younger you sucks more then the older current you, you're on the right track." It really changed something and keeps motivating me. I look back and see how GARBAGE (😭) I was, I'm able to notice a lot of the mistakes I was making and it makes me feel so much better. Only person you can compare yourself to is-- yourself.

Your starting point is still waaaaaaaaaaaaay above where I'm at even with some (unstructured) practice, but then I'm also shite at structuring and still at the "I need to practice perspective" -> "These lines are so boring, I don't wanna draw anymore" phase.

Honestly you're doing great. The "Failure" sketchbook is a necessary step though! Without it, none of the other sketchbooks would be there. I think you should be proud of yourself. You've significantly progressed!

remember though, even if you dont feel like youre making any progress, you 100% are, even if just subconsciously. every art piece you do or practice helps you improve even if just a little.

being an artist is just continuing to make things out of passion even when in a rut, or when you feel like everything you make is shit, it's just the continuous drive to keep moving forward regardless out of love of what you do I experience this alot as a musican where I have periods where I can't make anything cause i feel like I can't anymore, but passion and love of what I do make me continue moving forward. anyone can be an artist, talent doesn't exist, everyone you think is talented is just someone who spent time learning and growing when nobody is watching, cause they love it
