Quite often in old tales and stories we hear about the brave young hero, setting out on a quest to win the hand of a fair maiden, this usually is done by completing a great task and impressing the previously mentioned maiden or more commonly her father, who would hold tight to the rights of his daughter, until he was swayed by our hero. This long established trope, would seem to have been entirely turned upon its head in today’s Scottish tale. The Skull in Saddle Monastery

Thank you for sharing these stories! That's honestly one of the biggest benefits of the internet that a lot of people don't even think about. The fact that you can keep traditions and stories from dying out by telling them online. Thereby exposing them to the entire world. Guarantee that at least someone will remember and tell the story to their children. Like me! This will be a great tale to tell my future children at bedtime!

Thank you for posting this tale. I've been to the ruins at Saddell and I'm not surprised that such a story exists - it's a very atmospheric place. I was the only person there on a bright sunny, summer's day but for some reason had a very strong sense that I was definitely not alone. I think I lasted about 15 minutes before beating a retreat!

It's true that the 'hero's journey' in world folklore usually involves a male protagonist who seeks to rescue a captive or enchanted female - who often plays a rather passive role in the story. Nevertheless, there are numerous tales with female heroines, who often show immense courage, strength, subtlety, and cunning in order to accomplish their purposes. I like to think that these tales served to keep alive the idea of female resourcefulness in overwhelmingly patriarchal cultures. After all - and despite their frequent misogyny - the 'Thousand and One Nights' are narrated by Shahrazad in a desperate effort to save her own life, and that of her potential successors.
