Choosing the saddest season in baseball is a subjective task. But Andruw Jones' 2008 season has a strong case to be the saddest baseball season of all time.

It truly felt that way in 07 (?) the year before he left us in FA. Bro hit like .220 and didn't even reach 30 homers. I remember thinking at the time he has to be tanking so Atlanta can afford to re-sign him...that season was hard to watch. I still remember him going 0-5 with 5 Ks in Boston.

@@ronnieortiz6803he was always chunky after like age 25. He was clearly already starting the decline. He spread out his stance a ton at the advice of Willie Mays, if I recall, and it led to him being an MVP calibre hitter but he changed back his last year in Atlanta because his knees couldn't take the stance. He was already going downhill. It was a bad signing. It's their own fault.

Terrible season for sure, but Andruw Jones will always have my respect for this reason: That season, he was rehabbing at one point with the Las Vegas 51s. I went to a game and was trying to snag some autographs ( I was about 13 at the time) and didn’t think Jones would sign because 1. Most Major Leaguers rehabbing in the minors tend to be jerks with autographs and 2. He was having such a bad season, I figured he wouldn’t give a crap about fans. He was kind and humble enough, even in the midst of his worst season ever, to stop and sign autographs. Still have it to this day and have always been a fan of his since.

Hey man. There's some stuff you've done that's really unique like playing the video transparently behind the graph. I think you should maybe think about how you can do some stuff more like that to make the channel's aesthetic and editing style more unique. Good job!

The 10 consecutive centerfield gold gloves alone should probably get him in the Hall. Add another 434 homers on top of that and he's a no brainer hall of famer. It used to be 500 career home runs made you an automatic first ballot hall of famer. So that alone gets him pretty close. The 10 straight gold gloves more than makes up for the 66 homers he would have needed for the Hall. He might be the best defensive center fielder of all time. The stat "Defensive Rating" says he's the best defensive center fielder of all time and by a pretty wide margin. That stat has Willy Mays as the #2 center fielder of all time behind but behind him by a fair distance. Once you consider the 434 homers on top of that he has to get in. The other thing to think about is that it does not even remotely look like Andruw took PEDs. He was never in great shape. His numbers actually got worse during the steroid era and he could have taken PEDs to improve them like a lot of players did but he chose not to. He never failed a drug test and his name never came up under any PED investigation or even any rumors or speculation. There is no PED cloud hanging around this guy at all. At the same time he was always competing against juicers so his numbers are solid but many of the numbers compared against him should be taken with a grain of salt. Even in this video it showed Manny Ramirez playing next to him and Manny was caught using steroids that exact same season. Andruw could have easily chosen to take PEDs but chose not to even when his numbers started to decline. He's easily a hall of famer. He's a guy who chose to play clean during the steroid era and still hit 434 home runs against juicers and still one 10 consecutive gold gloves and statistically might be the best defensive player to even play the centerfield position. I honestly can't believe he's been on the ballot for 6-years now and hasn't gotten in yet. I believe if people stopped comparing his numbers to the juicers who played in that era he would have gotten in already. 434 home runs doesn't look like as much when it's compared to the A-Rod's, Bonds's, McGwire's, Sosa's and Manny Ramirez's of the world but all those guys cheated while Andrew did everything clean.

In all fairness Andruw had started to decline his last year in Atlanta and his knees clearly became problematic as time went on. This decline was largely why he received only a 2 year deal. LA seemed to not be a good place for him either. But there is a misconception that he stopped being a productive hitter at this point when he actually was quite productive in limited action for the remainder of his career, offensively. His body took a beating. He routinely played nearly every game since age 20 or so and he, like Ichiro, grew up working extremely hard since he was a little kid. I heard he had to do, if I recall, 200 pushups and situps every night before bed as a kid. Foreign athletes are often pushed so hard at such a young age that they decline very sharply after age 30 or so. Some don't tho. He gave his all for a decade in Atlanta.

I mean when a guy that was this “good” all of a sudden turns that ridiculously bad, I assume something happened to his performance enhancing substance supply. Like David Ortiz that one year where he shrunk to half size and couldn’t hit for the first 2/3 of the season, Gerrit Cole when they first banned spider tack, or Sammy Sosa right when they started testing and then wound up having to cork his bat.

I started yelling "fat ass, fat ass" chants in the stands that actually caught on. So much of his downfall was also due to poor conditioning and preseason work ethic. It was painful to watch and made it impossible to support him. This is also why I don't support his HoF bid.

An overlooked thing is he spread out his stance at the suggestion of Willie Mays I think and while it gave him his 2 best offensive seasons he had to revert back his last year in ATL because his knees were bothering him. His decline started that year. Anyone saying it was ALL a matter of tanking dont understand this. If he felt healthy he wouldve kept that stance in his contract year and had a monster year and signed a longer deal but he had a poor year. If it was just about his not trying then why the worst year of his career in his contract year? The braves knew what was happening. The poor performance gave them the chance to sign him but they passed.
@ryangale3757
@ryangale3757 6 месяцев назад
My stance on it is simple: if we're going to let Sandy Koufax get in based solely on the back of his 6 year peak, then Andruw Jones needs to get in, without a doubt. Longer career, similarly elite peak, but with multiple other high quality seasons as well. You take out Koufax's peak, he's average at best; you take out Jones's best 6 year run, he's still a solid MLB starter with occasional flashes of All-Star quality. We didn't let Koufax's lack of a back end of his career keep him out, so neither should Jones's late career decline keep him out, if that's the standard we are going with. Anything else is hypocritical.

Travis Shaw’s 2019 season (which was briefly shown in this video) could also have this title. No, he didn’t have the longevity that Andruw Jones had, but Shaw was a 30+ homer beast for the Brewers in 2017 and 2018 before inexplicably falling off a cliff. Like Jones after 2008, Shaw’s career never recovered.

They were 32 percent better than the league average, which is top 5 all time. This team was WALL TO WALL brilliant, even without Gehrig. Their record of 106-45 was an underachievament. Chris Davis is by far the most pathetic contract story I can even imagine. You could make a pretty awful movie about how Murphy's Law was in effect for the slugger, and it wasn't completely undeserved. Stopping Adderall ruined his career. He could afford some grimy doctors, I'd have just bought the scripts. You only need one to prescribe it. If he wants to abuse it... it must have gotten really bad... It ruined the Orioles attempt to sustain success. It was a huge investment, the biggest in franchise history, and dragged the team down for 7 years while actually trying to compete, before leading to the inevitable rebuild with a 25 million dollar investment into what used to be a solid power hitter that struck out a lot. After the suspension, he had no power and a monster hole in his swing that opposing pitchers found with ease. He struck out so much, had the 54 consecutive at-bays without a hit to start his season. It was humiliating, as an Orioles fan, I felt that humiliation in my soul, because I was so proud to have him in an Orioles uniform, I feel like I vouched for him, and he destroyed what little bit we had built

5:30 What were the Dodgers smoking to "A" put an overweight Jones in CF next to Manny in LF... And "B" expecting anything in the gap to not instantly be a triple because they did that. I get people weren't fully aware of the decline of Jones to come... But still with Manny already in LF anything but lower defensive expectations is nuts. Manny was already terrible on defense despite having the Green Monster helping him cover less ground in Boston. Jones was clearly overweight and showing normal signs of aging even if his decline wasn't so severe. It's mind boggling to me Joe Torre was the Dodger manager at the time. After Torre was mlb's version of "King Midas" for nearly 3/4's of a decade in pinstripes.

Older players can mentor younger players with potential, and the Dodgers were loaded with great prospects that just never really came to fruition around 2005-2007. Manny ended up playing in the Cubs AAA team and mentoring Javy Baez to become a better hitter. Unfortunately, that wore off about 2 seasons ago for El Mago. Why do you think Vlad Jr, Cavan Biggio, Dante Bichette, Moises Alou, Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Bonds, Druw Jones, and countless other kids become so good? They have great mentors that no amount of time in the batting cage or time spent with "professional trainers" (if they're professionals, why didn't they make it to MLB?) can match. Also, older stars bring in some eyeballs and butts in seats. Frankly, I'm surprised teams don't take advantage of older players willing to play for the league minimum more often not because of their playing ability, but the cash they bring in and the training they provide for prospects. Like older dogs helping train puppies.

The opposite is true. You're counting all the execs, umpires, and pioneers (Candy Cummings, inventor of the curveball is supposedly considered a player to some just because he threw a few mediocre pro seasons), and Negro Leagues too. If you take out all the execs and put only players and count all the negro league players too (which they're still trying to figure out exactly how many qualify as equal to MLB quality), well under 1% of players make the Hall. I think it should be closer to 2% of MLB players, or one player for every 3 full teams roughly. And MLB is several decades older (1871 or at least 1876) if you count pre-American League, which you should. Compared to other sports, MLB's hall is the toughest by far to get elected. Not saying it shouldn't be, but it also should be for the best players of each generation and each team to celebrate, not just Derek Jeter and Mike Trout and nobody else.

there's 270 players in the HoF. That means on average, 2-3 enter the league each season, which seems like the perfect amount imo

You can’t put everyone in the Hall..And after watching Jones most of his career, he comes up just a little short in my opinion..No shame in that.There’s a lot of good players that fall just a little short of the Hall

Jones dosnt belong. We don’t award players who don’t care. We shouldn’t reward a wife beater. And we have reason to doubt on the advanced defensive numbers.

exactly. i mean theres no doubt jones was great...but better than mays?! Really? Theres something sus about that. But the main issue here is jones's domestic legal issue and the fact that he declined so badly. And it was because he stopped caring.

Andruw Jones is the laziest player i have ever seen. Non-speedsters like Paul LoDuca and Brad Hawpe took an extra base when Jones played their routine singles lackadaisically, with the submarine flip back toward the infield not even getting near 2nd base ahead of the runner. Then, when the Braves had finally had enough of him at age 30, he signed with the Dodgers and showed up to spring training very fat. When asked about his weight, he laughed it off. He was told that the fans might not appreciate their team's big free agent showing up so out of shape, so he said he didn't care what the fans thought. If he was such a great player, why did very smart baseball guys like John Scheurholz and Bobby Cox let him walk out the door as a free agent in the prime of his career? I can't believe there are people who want to put Andruw Jones in the Hall of Fame.

It’s like he started getting older, his metabolism started to slow down and he didn’t make any adjustments for it. He thought he can eat and behave like he did when he was a kid and get away with it. Anyone who has aged into their 30s knows you can’t. I have a hard time giving my vote for the Hall to someone who didn’t just decline as all players do as they age but fell off a cliff. He wasn’t just an average player for some many years. He was well below average.

I absolutely hate Andruw Jones. I hope he never makes it into the Hall of Fame. He is the definition of lazy. Yes his early years were good, but I can never forget or forgive him for his time with the Dodgers.
