The Saints' return to New Orleans and Steve Gleason's iconic play deserve a deep rewind

On September 25th, 2006, the Saints returned to New Orleans for their first home game since Hurricane Katrina. On Monday Night Football, the nation watched as it took just four snaps for history to be made. Steve Gleason blocked the punt, Curtis Deloatch recovered, and so much of what led up to the game was forgotten.
Even before Katrina made landfall the Saints’ future was up in the air with talks of relocation coming as owner Tom Benson delayed negotiations with the state. On top of that, the Saints were facing a dangerous Falcons team led by Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn, and just a play before it looked like Atlanta wouldn’t even need to punt.
Remember how we got to this point, and relive the moment that’s now known as “Rebirth.”

This REALLY surprised me. I go to Hofstra, and we don't even HAVE a football team anymore. Hofstra is pretty obscure when it comes to football, so it's amazing to think that we had such a high caliber receiver. Colston graduated just a few years before the program was terminated in 2009

Gleason unfortunately contracted ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in 2011 which has forced him to be wheelchair-bound due to the paralysis that accompanies this condition. However, he is still an integral part of the Saints organization and a devoted father and husband and an inspiration to many in New Orleans and beyond. In 2011, he was awarded a Super Bowl ring for his contributions to the team. On October 15, 2015, he was at the Saints/Falcons game and was presented with the George Halas Award, and that same night the Saints blocked a Falcons punt and returned it for a touchdown, amazingly echoing Gleason's own blocked punt from 9 years prior.

The Edge from U2 also started the charity Music Rising at this time, which helped replace the instruments that New Orleans musicians lost in Katrina - keeping the music scene alive in the region. Trombone Shorty and his band performed as well. This was also U2's return to the arena where they played the first post-9/11 Superbowl Halftime show. The video may have tried to downplay its significance, but this musical performance was a big part of the night, adding to the cultural importance of the rebirth of New Orleans.

The flyers depended on a back up to get there, and even for them to get into the playoffs was insane because it came down to the last game of the season against the Rangers. It's also very wierd to see 2x Super Bowl champion Rob Ninkovich in this play.

This was a real missed opportunity to talk about Gleason. His story after the block is tragic, but I wish you had talked more about what led him into that moment instead of the punter.

I'm a Texans fan but this video gave me the chills and I even got a little chocked up at the end

Shoutout from Australia. You guys have gotten me into America sports with all these rewinders. I hope one day you guys could do a rewinder for an Aussie sport (we have a lot to choose from). The 2015 National Rugby League Grand Final is an amazing match if I were to recommend one. Either way, you guys stay awesome.

I was about 10 when this play went down but I still vividly remember us around our tube TV watching the game and believe me, following what happened in Katrina, and that the Saints finally were back in the Superdome; I can say with *confidence* that everyone not in the state of Georgia was a Saints fan on that night.

Can we talk about how good of a play that was by Gleason? He lined up further right, cut left immediately as the ball was snapped and had an open lane there. Possibly also a missed assignment by Atlanta, but they went to where he was, not where he was going to be. Incredible.

Rewatching this now and now the saints playing the Packers in Jacksonville at home it would be amazing to something along this line happen again when everything clears up

There's a statue of Steve Gleason commemorating the blocked punt and the Saints return to New Orleans. It's like lore in the city, now, something that was determined by fate almost.

Keep up the awesome work SB Nation! These rewinds are fantastic and I learn so much watching them, here's me think I knew alot about sports. One I'd like to see is the Dan Marino fake spike against the Jets or Ray Finkel costing the Dolphins the Superbowl

As a falcons fan it hurts to know the aints scores against my team but it’s still nice to know it meant this much to them to get the score on the play

Another great SB Nation rewinder (even tho I'm a Falcons fan) As for a future episode, I recommend the 2012 "Fail Mary" game

props to Mike Tirico to announcing the score and then cutting his mic to let the moment speak for itself
