The saluting Soldier represents every soldier and is oriented towards all preceding memorials to encompass military losses while simultaneously saluting the Battlefield Cross: the rifle stuck into the boots of a service member fallen in combat, dog tags hung from the rifle, with the helmet atop the rifle.
The Battlefield Cross dates back to World War I showing honor and respect for the fallen and, in more recent years, is placed at base camp or a unit headquarters allowing a distinct place to grieve. At the center of the memorial stands the granite panel affixed with a distinguished gold star.
On one side of the granite are images of the modern Gold Star and Surviving Family Member experience and on the other side, the history of the Service Flag designed in WWI and the Gold Star and Surviving Family Member pins bestowed upon surviving family members.
