A look at some of the locomotives (and more!) in my model train graveyard... and it's quite a lot bigger than last time!

10:38 - That is an SDP40F in a slightly off Phase I livery (it's also known as the "bloody nose" for obvious reasons). That was Amtrak's first locomotives that they took delivery of after they were formed in 1971. Until then they were using the locomotives and rolling stock of the other railroads they took over passenger services from. They were also infamously bad running locomotives because they couldn't handle running at high speeds very well. It would be cool if you could get a hold of a modern model from the Athearn Genesis line and take a look at them. Something that you may like is they ran with trains of mixed liveries in the very beginning, and for that reason this time was known as Amtrak's rainbow era. You can still see footage online of trains with Orange, Blue, Green, Yellow and Silver cars throughout their network.

An interesting video and a suggestion, I know you already have the cheap see through clip lid containers and that these are readily available at Bargain Stores. Segregate all of the spares into sections i.e. Track, Locomotives, Carriages, Wagons, Electrical etc. It would make life so much easier. Repairing the damaged items is a series on its own and of great help to up and coming aspiring modellers.

that Amtrak body you pulled out is the SDP40F. I think you also pulled out its chassis not long after. It was built by Electro-Motive Division from 1973 - 1974. 150 of them were built. They were one of Amtrak's first new passenger locomotives as by this time they were primarily using old F and E units from other railroads. However they were plagued with issues. The six axle bogies, steam heaters and having a heavy locomotive pull lightweight coaches caused the very heavy locomotives to ride roughly. And given, Amtrak's rails weren't in the best of shape at this time. The SDP40F's were often caught up in wrecks. Much of them were traded for ATSF engines and switchers (we call shunters, switchers here in the states) where they actually rode a lot better on the ATSF. Only of them are left today over in Nevada where it even operates.

I also have a use for syringes. Bought some LEDs of the correct scale and fitted an LED to one of Casper's used Insulin syringes. Treat my cat's medical condition twice a day, and get the basis for a lamp post. Hey presto, a street lamp. Can also downscale some NBC timetables to stick on a piece of plasticard and attach to the post. Fitted some LEDs to the inside of a 1:72 Leyland National. Experimenting with fitting a pickup and using Scalextric track as a power source on my diorama of Brynmawr Bus Station.

10:37 The model is of an FP45 locomotive. Amtrak never owned them but they owed a similar class in the 1970's called the SDP40F. Incorrect liveries are common on US train set locos. I'd love to see you review a more recently produced model of a North American diesel. The prototype doesn't need to be modern, just the model itself. I guess they're harder to come by and are more expensive in the UK.

Even if you can't restore some of those engines to operation, it'd be interesting to do a cosmetic restoration. Or in the case of the 8F body, you may not be able to use it for anything other than wreckage or scrapyard layout decoration, but it's intact enough, you have something that can be measured and recreated for 3D printing. Hey, there's an idea - since you're all about separately fitted parts, maybe you can recreate that body with even more detail. Of course, no one should HAVE to do that (except the manufacturer), but I dunno, anything for a good excuse to play with the 3D printer again. :P

Now this is something you could try with that Schools Class. It could just stay as a dummy loco that’s pushed or pulled around for fun. How about trying to 3D print a tender? That’ll be a challenge! If you think this is a good idea, then write it down, Sam!

Hey Sam! How about a Frankenstein Train, made with all sorts from the scrapyard? Not just a loco, but a load of rolling stock to go with it! :-)

Hi Sam great video as usual. Please restore those first few models you got out of box 1 they really are great and you should buy that schools class a new tender and get her running again.

Agreed. A new tender for the Schools Class loco would restore it beautifully. Would be lovely to see it running, instead of festering in the scrapyard.

Tornado chassis must be quite modern as it is DCC ready. Wonder why you threw it away?

I bought a broken locomotive once. I haven't managed to do anything with it yet, but the tender and body are intact... I just need to find a new wheel pair, and maybe a new motor if I feel like it

Do you know who made the Ford box wagon? That is the first time I have seen one, but would love to add one to my layout. I searched the web for one to no avail.

Hi Sam how about converting a old hornby or bachmann even triang to dcc with sound and headlamps and just all round bringing it in to 2021 would be a good watch or build a makeshift largest model railway bridge with huge inclines see which locos can do it.

The School's Class at 19:10 looks great. If you could find a working tender for it then it would be a great running engine. Or find a tender without the Motor then it would make an impressive display piece at least.

Here is what you do with that Schools class loco from the two tender monster: Motorize it and couple it in front of the monster for MORE POWER!

A little bit of weathering and some paint on some of those could possibly add afew extra bits to a layout
