I had no idea what this show was about, when i started it, but it was one of the best fantasy-shows i have seen in years. Im glad i get to rewatch it again with u guys 😊
When Sturridge and Pattinson were starting out in their careers in Los Angeles, their friend group also included Andrew Garfield, Eddie Redmayne, Jamie Dornan and Charlie Cox.
Sturridge's micro expressions and eye "acting" were the *BEST* part in the first episode. Eric's giddiness throughout the whole thing was amazing to watch haha speaking of Pattinson, him and Sturridge are actually besties LOL
I can see why they decided to not go with the comics appearance of his eyes, but it makes me happy that they did still include it here and there in the show.
@@0okamino I believe Tom said that they tried the comic accurate look but it was TOO MUCH on screen. The "Black/starry" eyes are there for a few times tho!
"I think it's one of them Draculas" is one of my favorite lines of the entire show and it never makes it to the reaction highlights. Thanks for leaving it in lol
Well, some others have left it in. It seems to be the ones who found it particularly amusing. The use of Dracula as a generic term does tickle me as well.
Neil Gaiman is a mad genius...seriously that adaptation of his graphic novel is spot on ! Great casting and glorious atmosphere !! Can't wait for season 2 !!
It’s a 10 ep season but they released an 11th episode later as a bonus. Half of that episode is an animated adaptation of issue #18 of the sandman, which is my single favorite comic book of all time. So excited for y’all to watch this one!
Your editor does a great job of getting all the best parts, kudos to that person. Also, if I walked into someones house and saw a group of people chanting in robes like that, I would have noped right out of there.
Any attempt to predict where The Sandman is going is an exercise in futility. Neil Gaiman has a limitless imagination, and this is the greatest outlet for it he ever found.
OMG! I am SO very glad that ya'll are watching this series! Neil Gaiman is my all time favorite author, and The Sandman is my all time favorite series of stories. I was highly impressed with this version of it overall, and that's likely due to all the imput from Neil himself. The first 5 episodes are one story arc, then episode 6 is completely different and is amazing, then the next 4 is another arc, and finally the 11th episode is a 2 part "bonus" episode which also was unbelievable. It has been renewed for a second season. I really hope that you guys really dig this. Thanks for giving it a chance! ~Be Blessed
"I'll give you this, a gift of eternal... sleep." So damn cool, the way he crouched and said those words... ugh love that part, can't wait to see the rest of the reactions with you guys. This show is great.
Indeed, and if you aren't familiar with the source material do yourself a favor and look up the original in comic punishment of "Eternal Waking" it's amazing and terrifying
@shillen Yeah, I hear they filmed waking though, wish they released that deleted scene. The Death one discussing her spinoff adventures is pretty neat however.
Eric smiling the whole time gives me pleasure. I know you remembered certain things from the books as you were watching. This was so beautifully done. I love the whole cast. The visuals. The writing. It's a masterpiece depiction of the graphic novels.
i legit gasped out loud when i saw that you guys are reacting to this! utterly beautiful adaptation of the brilliant work of Neil Gaiman. Eric i loved watching your reaction as you knew what was coming. and Calvin is right, Dream is attractive and muscular in a way, but also otherworldly and slight and kinda scary. Tom Sturridge is perfect for this role. cant wait for the next reaction videos! Love my boys!
Im so glad you decided to watch this series. It was maybe my favorite TV show of 2022 and episode 6 was probably my favorite episode of TV in 2022. I honestly think that Tom Sturridge could be/should've been nominated for an Emmy. How many actors can convey all the emotion he does naked, from within a glass box, without speaking. This is also in the same universe as the _Lucifer_ series. So the Lucifer in this series is the same one that Tom Ellis played, the Cain is the same one that Tom Welling played. Also, Johanna Constantine in the comics was John Constantine. Yes, that one.
The Lucifer show is VERY loosely based off of the Lucifer comics, which is a spinoff of the Sandman comic series btw. So I would say the characters are more different than the same
I'm so excited you're getting to this at last! Child!Alex was played by the same actor as the little boy in The Haunting of Bly Manor. The "sleepy sickness" was a real epidemic that struck roughly a million people starting in the 1910s and 20s, many of whom entered decades-long comas. The cause is still unknown, but may have been a kind of enterovirus (the same family that caused polio). It's unrelated to sleepING sickness, which is caused by a parasite carried by the African tsetse fly. It's unfortunately sometimes a thing, when a child dies, for the parent to start abusing a surviving child in a "the wrong child died" sort of way.
HELLO?!? Did I really not notice you started reacting to The Sandman… 😭😭 Well, I’m here now!! One of my favorite shows ever. They did so well with this adaptation!!
I now know how Dream feels for I have been waiting too long for this reaction! Seriously though, you guys will not regret this choice, hope you love the show.
Fun fact about the sleeping sickness, I did not know it was a real thing until I watched it with my mother, and she said "Oh, that is so clever. I love it when fantasy uses stuff from real history." Witch then compelled me to look up The Sleeping Sickness, wich was a real thing in the 1920ties and 30ties, the latin name being Encephalitis lethargica.
From 1916, with the last recorded onset of cases being in the late 1920s. There are some compelling ideas about the medical cause, but it’s still not fully understood. Who knows? Maybe this did have something to do with it. 😉
Fun Fact: Lucifer, the show, is based (albeit very, very loosely) on a spinoff comic from the original Sandman graphic novels. However for this show they decided to go a different route for Lucifer. However Maze is still in it (technically). And John Dee is actually a Justice League villain called Dr Destiny. And yes; that is the same dreamstone from WW84. But done properly. [EDIT] Also, Matthew The Raven is the same Matthew from the Swamp Thing comic/show (it's a long, long story). Love from the UK, guys.
When Gaiman was writing the series he 'borrowed freely' from other DC property characters, particularly Alan Moore's work. So when, for instance, a story mentions Gotham he really is referring to Batman's Gotham.
@@Tao_Tology Yes, but he had to stop after a few issues: This is why Mr. Fantastic and Martian Manhunter appear in the first issues when he's looking for his items, but eventually no other mainline DC characters do, other than the Vertigo-oriented like Constantine.
I'm so glad you're reacting to this show! I was seriously surprised at how many of the bigger reaction channels skipped this when it came out, especially since it was the number one show for several weeks. You're gonna love it...and episode 6 is so good!
Much like this channel, I think some of the others didn’t so much skip it as much as still need to find room for it on their plates. Some might even be waiting for the run-up to season 2.
oh i can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of this series, it's genuinely one of my favourite tv shows of all time (and possibly my favourite comic adaptation!)
Fun fact: The Sleepy sickness really happened. It started around 1916, which is why the story of Dream's capture starts there to tie it into a real world event. The Robin Williams film "Awakenings" is based off of people suffering from that disease.
I haven't even started the video but i already liked it because i've been waiting for your reaction to this show for a while. This is such a great show, and you guys are in for one interesting ride.
They're best friends (many Brit actors you know are in the same group/mutual friends) irl and Tom chose to change his physical look? because he said that was the only thing in his control to affect how Dream may appear
Love this show! It really has that “book” feeling, don’t really know how to describe that. Just brought me back to reading books with stories like this when I was younger.
Awesome reaction guys, it really starts to get going next episode. I can’t wait for your reactions to Dreams journey and the familiar character names you’ll hear.
I love the score. Especially in the scene with the bird trying to rescue him and it builds up and then just stops when the bird is shot. It's just great
For anyone who wants even more Sandman-ness there are now 3 audio series (I think only on audible). It's been soooooo interesting knowing the comics then experiencing the audio series take on Sandman and then this TV adaptation. 👍🏻
@@0okamino I love how some of the people from the audio books also did voices for the animated episode...even if not the same voices they do in the audio series...but I LOVE the "synergy."
I'm so glad you guys are doing this one! I tend to dislike Gaiman's writing until it's turned into a tv show or movie, and then it just clicks for me. I hadn't read these comics so I came in completely blind. I thought the first ep was a little slow; nothing that I expected to happened actually did, but by episode two I was totally hooked, and there are some really, really good episodes. I thought Tom Sturridge did a fantastic job considering he had to convey a LOT while still playing a very emotionally-restrained character.
You are going to love the journey to get Dreams stuff back, he meets some familiar characters from the DC universe in comics that aren’t named in the show but if you read comics you’ll know their civilian names.
Like who? That nut who runs around at night, dressed like a bat? What’s his name, Ralph or something? Really makes you wonder how someone gets started doing that sort of thing, don’t it?
In the episode the sleeping sickness is also called "Encephalitis lethargica" which was a real disease that existed around 1917-1928. The pandemic killed an estimated 500,000 people
Yes! When you have so much on your plate at any given time, it’s understandable that it can take a while to get a whole new series in the mix. I’m just glad it’s finally time for this one. This is a series I certainly wouldn’t want the Blind Wave crew to be, uh… sleeping on.
One of my favorite bits about the period of Morpheus’ imprisonment: there was a Golden Age hero called the Sandman, gentleman hero who fought with a gas gun (tear gas, sleeping gas, etc.) and gas mask. After the Neil Gaiman Sandman run introduced this idea, some creators did an amazing (and often trippy) series about the Golden Age Sandman (Wesley Dodds) in the ‘30s & 40s, taking to the streets to fight crime due to disturbing dreams and anger at injustice. “Sandman Mystery Theater.”
Hey, it’s like the comics. Each person favors some issues more than others, and then, of course, there are those that are pretty much universally agreed as excelling in the series.
Super excited for this series with you guys! I honestly forgot since it’s been a while since it first came out but now I’m even more hype to rewatch with you
Yeah, Sandman! Let's go! The show actually uses very little CGI or green-screen. Instead they shot real things in real locations wherever possible, and then composited them together to get what they needed. The bird was created in editing., mostly with footage of a real bird and with puppets.
Yes, this is one of my favorite shows from last year. Among the Endless Dream is one of the most powerful behind Death and also one of the most responsible over his domain.
I've been dying for you guys to react to this. It is my favorite comic written by my favorite author and adapted so incredibly well. You guys are in for a real treat.
Happy to see you guys covering this. One of my favorite shows of the year. FYI, episode 10 is the end of season 1. Episode 11 is a bonus episode unconnected (mostly) to the arcs in the first season.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yessssssss. I started and finished your Lucifer reactions and then watched sandman and since then I've been patiently waiting in the corner for this reaction
I can’t wait to see more of your reactions to this incredible show! It’s still too underrated for being such a masterclass in adaptation with an incredible cast and cinematography
It’s wild for me at the moment as I am rewatching Narcos(again!) and having the actor who is Agent Steve Murphy (who I could slap a lot on there) playing The Corinthian and also in the new Indiana Jones film and of course Agent Javier Pena played by a certain Pedro Pascal who is of course now Joel Miller and The Mandalorian at the moment. Both guys have both done so well in there careers since Narcos…looking forward to continue watching The Sandman and The Last of us with you guys, plus of course The Mandalorian when that returns on the 1st March!!!!!
Yay. Very Very happy you guys are finally reacting to it, I was waiting since the show premiere. Great reaction guys, keep up the awesome work. Much love from Brazil 😘
The reason why Ethel Cripps still named her child "John", despite being on the run and changing their last name, was because Gaiman was re-using an existing DC character named "John Dee" a.k.a. the super-villain Doctor Destiny who had some dream-related gimmick, which Gaiman retrofitted into the mythology he was building here.
I've been waiting for this for ages, nervous about whether it would do the story justice. I'm pleased. This was the first graphic novel I bought way back when in like 1989. It's a special beautiful thing.
About Damn Time you guys watched one of the best tv series of the past decade! There is one word that perfectly describes this as a truly great pilot episode, HYPNOTIC. Tom Sturridge has such a soothing and relaxing voice that it almost makes you want to sleep, and I mean that in a very good way. And speaking of powerful voices, Charles Dance proving once again he is one of the best actors around. That man has so much base in his voice he can speak at normal volume and you can hear him from like 30 yards away.
I've been waiting so long for this!! I saw your trailer reaction but didn't see it for so long, I was worried you weren't doing a reaction! So happy!!!!!!
So the sleeping sickness actually did occur. You can read about it. It was awful. People died from lack of sleep. After a certain amount of time, your body starts breaking down and going into shock. Quite a few of the bird shots this season were real birds.
33:20 Charles Dance was Lord Vetinari in Going Postal, which I think you'd also FREAKING LOVE. And Vetinari's a tyrant, but a benevolent one. His mercilessness is in the name of his people and his city. So he's...kinda neutral morally.
