As someone who's read the books, they did a pretty good job in adaptation. There were a few parts shifted or left out for brevity, but there were a few shots that straight up looked like the comic art, so it averages out. Introducing the Corinthian earlier and having him drop knowledge on Roderick Burgess was a smart move, in terms of explaining things up front. It's a little hard to see, but the Corinthian has little toothy chompy mouths where his eyes should be.

Yes, yes it has. Any complaints I have are incredibly minor, and I find it an excellent adaptation.

It was definitely different narratively, but I think it makes it easier for fans coming in who haven't read the comics to understand. I will say I've watched ahead, and not really a spoiler, but the way it's being told doesn't seem to change the overall arc of the comics. It definitely speeds up as we move from episode to episode.

Lucienne is Dream's right hand in the Dream World, his librarian. The raven was called Jessamy and is a different character.

However, in the comics, it was said that Lucien (he was male there) had once been Dream's raven.

Well, they gave Gaiman full creative control of this show, so any changes to the story are ones he agreed with. He could veto any he didn't like. No surprise it's such a faithful adaptation.

Even though they've changed a few things here and there, I feel like that's an addition to the comics. I've read all or most of them and this is almost entirely spot on and respectful of the source material. I really hope we get a season 2, because there's so much more to explore. The cast is amazing and Tom is amazing as Dream.

I loved this episode... having read the comic, my one complaint is that Dream cursed Alex not with eternal sleep (which the sleepy sickness already caused in some people) but eternal WAKING, where Alex keeps having that nightmare where you wake up and then realize that you're still asleep and still in the nightmare... only he experiences it perpetually. I thought that was a much more "oh my gosh wth" of a punishment than just sleeping for the rest of his life.

His behaviour was worse in the comics though so it makes sense they’d tone down his punishment to scale. (Although I’m sad we don’t get to see the eternal waking sequence in the show. It was so horrifying)

This is a show that 100% benefits from having read the source material, even the omitted parts give light to things in the comics. It's Really close to source material.

on Dream's helm, that *is* vertebrae. they may or may not explain it in this season, but that helm is fashioned from the skull of a dead god...i think that was explained in Overture (the prequel miniseries)...it's also meant to look like a gas mask to serve as a retcon inspiration for the Golden Age superhero The Sandman

Not sure if anyone's said but Jessamey is an African Crow, which are actually a species of raven despite the name. They had bird actors for both her and Matthew! Some was CG but they did have real birds on set.

Claire just made an amazing point with Roderick's death. Death was technically there for Roderick, meaning she must've been in that room whilst Dream was caged, which is probably an oversight.

Idk if I remember correctly, but in the death episode didn't she say something like she misses a few people every now and then. But she also knew that Dream was captured, so idk.

Death coudnt help Dream because Dream didnt aks for help and the Endless cant intervined as they want with the mortals

Thank for checking it out with me. The comic started a little slow as well, but the depths we get into regarding the dream realm made up for the lack of action. I'm hoping the series continues along the same path.

Originally, the 'gift' was of eternal waking. Ever wake up from one nightmare, only to find yourself in another? Imagine doing that, *forever.* That's why he's being all twitchy in his sleep. They filmed the forever-waking scene, but it was cut.

I love that you react to a lot of shows that I also watch lol. So glad I subscribed. Also as someone who read the comic, I think they can go crazier with how the dreaming looks but that's okay, it still looks good. Morpheus is also growing on me, of course he can't be as creepy-looking as the comic one but the cat scene is so good.

Cool! You guys are doing Sandman! I enjoyed the first episode as set-up. I’m sure it’ll pick up after this. I haven’t read the comics, but I am intrigued by Tom Stirridge as Dream. Boyd Holbrook (Corinthian) is always a joy to watch. And I love the aesthetic of the fantasy stuff.

Jessamy is a African Pied Crow, which is actually a species of small raven.

It’s a white napes raven. Very intelligent even among corvids. Since they shot in multiple locations, certain countries have bans on using native species in filming to discourage potential poaching/capture for exotic pet trade. Since the white nape is from Africa it’s pretty common stand in for ravens in most broadcasts

I am loving other reactions of those who haven't read them...but I"m like, where are the people that have read it?! My husband jokes that we are old and don't know how to use the internet....but, we've been waiting for this, or, i have been waiting for this fo so long!! @@ValentinasWatching It's a throwaway line in The Kindly Ones Part 12 (Issue #68). Matthew asks Dream what happens to his ravens when they move on, and in his reply Morpheus mentions Lucien was the first one. :)

For those who care: A *crow* is a bird of the genus Corvus, or more broadly a synonym for all of Corvus. Crows are generally black in colour. A *raven* is any of several larger-bodied bird species of the genus Corvus. These species do not form a single taxonomic group within the genus. There is no consistent distinction between "crows" and "ravens" a *magpie* is a raven with white markings

Crows and ravens are highly intelligent among the animal world. They are about equal to four or five-year-old humans. They hold grudges, can use tools such as sticks, and understand how to drop rocks into water to raise the level until they can drink.

Who knows where the sandman will go from here. It has a huge fanbase, but it really comes down to how well they adapt the source material. and for how long. There is no solid release date for a second season yet, but if they try to be faithful to the books, this could be a cultural phenomenon like game of thrones was several years ago.

Jessemy is an Eurasian Megpie, quite common in England. But I don't think they are present in America. They are Corvids

i didnt read the comics but time in a dream does not have sense, so unless you are really conscious in them 100 years could have been hours for the ones just dreaming. they use time according to human rules in that scene. love this show but i found a lot of little details like that.
