@@ProperBird Pride of my collection is still my original copy of "Snatcher" for the Mega CD. Look up how much that one goes for these days (it's actually a great story as well, by Hideo Kojima). I also have a copy of "Keio Flying Squadron", if you don't know that one look up a longplay and watch the intro. :)
Just wanted to add on the Keio Flying Squadron comment: A bunny girl on a dragon who's chasing after a 3003 year old super intellegent Racoon called Dr Pon who's stolen the Key to the Secret Treasure because he wants to create a Racoon World and isn't allowed any dinner until she's caught him. They really don't write them like they used to. :)
One of the artists on the original run (the penciler, I think), Sam Keith, is a favorite of mine. His first solo comic, The Maxx, was a fantastic, goofy, and incredibly dark exploration of coping mechanisms.
If you want to try an interesting graphic novel look up one called "Indigo Prime" by John Smith that was originally published as a series of stories in 2000AD. Indigo Prime are an organization that exist outside of normal space-time who's main role is to fix breaks in reality, such as patching up the timelines to stop things collapsing due to careless time travellers. The final story in the book (staring Winwood and Cord) involves Jack the Ripper and HG Welles' Time Machine and is still one of my all time favourites.
What a masterful presentation Jinzee. Again. You outdo yourself! I'm really looking forward to this series, I've enjoyed all the recent Neil Gaiman adaptations. One thing sticks out to me though, and that is that Neil must enjoy the "Devil's Lettuce" as much as I do, to achieve the higher state of consciousness that these ideas tend to spring from. I'm pretty sure I'll watch the series while on the ganja, and have some incredible dreams as a result. Side note, since we all know how important cats are in your life, which you reinforced by mentioning how these comics required cat cuddles...are you planning to play 'Stray' on stream? :)
That video went by fast! I’ve never had a comic bring me to tears, yet. The closest I’ve come was from the first time I read The Crow. Sometimes, I can’t even finish it because it’s just so intense and sad. This is definitely going to be the next big thing I read, AND I already own the first half of the series! Keep up the great work, Jinzee, and don’t worry about how long the videos are. We sure don’t!

I've only listened to the audiobook and loved it, but this has inspired me to get a hold of the comics as well. Something you touched on a few times, and something that I feel Neil Gaiman is truly the best at, is Gaiman's ability to personify these celestial beings or deities or these meta entities, and make us actually care about them. Then there's the weaving of mythology and folklore into these natural, fun stories. Love him. Great video, as always. A great amount of work has gone into the visuals, and the skits were funny as well!
I haven't read this. I only found out about it because of the Netflix series which got me curious. The way you told us about the story made me want to actually read all of it because it seems to be a great story. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it in such a beautiful way. Another thing, as someone that enjoys anime and manga, I do agree that animations and graphic novels do not give the default definition of “for children”. Frankly speaking, a lot of the classical tales we know were not for children initially, so… yeah. Anyway, thank you again for the wonderful video. 🙂
It is really wild reading sandman and seeing the dozens of side stories, with characters growing and changing, while the protagonist fights so hard to stay exactly the same. Morpheus is a legitimately terrible person, but he's an excellent character. One of the most clever elements of the plot is that some of Morpheus's refusal to change is hidden by the flow of the plots of those around him. We see the potential for growth, and we see his moments of decency, but ultimately he must be fully replaced to see any real improvement. His apparent growth throughout the narrative is, fittingly enough, just a dream.

You have a beautiful way of words which are formed together in a way that's incredibly intriguing and keeps my attention. So, thank you for this.
Overture, while it fits fantastically with the story, to the extent that I'm only 95% sure of this, I am reasonably certain was a late bit of gap-filling - it's unquestionable that it was only published much later (2013, when the original run was 1989-1996), and I believe that the idea for the story was only dreamt up after the original series. There are places (like the Dream of a Thousand Cats) where if even an outline of Overture existed, it would have been natural for it to be mentioned, but it isn't - the only hint at it in the original run is early on, when it's mentioned that Dream was already weary and returning home from a great mission in distant space, and that's why Burgess was able to cage him. Incidentally, that's one of the few clear mis-steps in the Netflix version. There, Dream is making what appears to be an entirely routine visit to Earth (to retrieve the wayward Corinthian) and there's no hint that he's in any way unusually vulnerable to being summoned or captured, but, despite his having been taken out of circulation for decades by a ritual that wasn't even aimed at him, he's free to return to Earth without taking any precautions nor any expression of concern routinely throughout the rest of the series (okay, I think Lucienne does briefly express concern once, but it gets handwaved away instantly)
Great content as always. I wanted to but never actually manage to read the comics simply because I don't really like comics. Nor did I enjoy the Audible audio dramas because I don't like audio dramas either. But I really like the stories and there is this actual book called The Sandman: Book of Dreams about these characters that I read a really long time ago that I remember as one of the better books I ever read. So recommending this one.
I really loved this. Sandman has always had a special place in my heart. I'd love to see you discuss more of Gaiman's works someday. Perhaps the Lucifer comic?
@@ProperBird Mike Carey definitely did great things with the character and even Gaiman himself in an introduction talked about how this version of Lucifer was truly defined by Carey.
If you haven't read the book "Good Omens" that Neil Gaiman wrote with Terry Pratchett you should give it a read. They recently did a TV mini-series of it that was pretty good, the book is better though.
@@ProperBird It was that way that Agnes Nutter, an actual witch who could actually see the future, took out those who burned her at the stake by forseeing her own death and packing her clothing with gunpowder and roofing nails. That's a hell of a way to go. :)
