Back in college, a few years after the series concluded, many of my friends were into this series. One of the unique things about it was that it seemed to appeal to both genders equally, very much a rarity at the time. We had a joke that it was passed between couples more often than STDs.
I was dating a non comic woman and she saw them at my place and out of curiosity took a look , she couldn't get enough saying that she didn't realize comics could be so deep. She was a recent graduate with a degree in English and she loved the themes that Gaiman used.
That "sleepy sickness" thing was real by the way. Medical historians think it might have been a side effect of polio in some kids. When they were much older, the victims were awakened by a medical trial for a short time - that story was in the movie "Awakenings" with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams.
The first time I ever mentioned doing Sandman on my channel was actually in my Boys volume 7 video which was way back in August 2019! So Sandman was a long time coming. Here’s the video we’re I mentioned it, it’s right in the intro. I actually mentioned 5 series I wanted to cover in that video, and Sandman was the final one on that list I hadn’t got to yet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RZcjB7E3H14.html
I read all of these in my teens, they were actually my first deep dive into graphic novels after years of anime and an occasional comic, eventually leading to hellblazer, fables, Y etc. Sandman is still my favourite. The narrative is intricate and the use of history, mythology and folklore is unparalleled. This series changed my brain and the way I saw the world. I’ve been rereading to prep for the Netflix adaptation, but this video is a great summary and memory jogger! Now I can’t get enough. Gotta do some historical research
I'm much the same, this is a 'memory jogger' for me too. I'm halfway through the netflix series and absolutely loving it, I hope they do more (I seem to remember the graphic novels went from strength to strength, so the material's definitely there).
@@kjmmxii123 they definitely went from strength to strength. It's a tall order to adapt something already so close to perfection- I have really been trying to think of the show as a standalone story but I don't think I'm a fan. It's not a disaster but I'll take the source material every damn time.
I just watched The Sandman and wanted to find someone on RU-vid that went through and explained the comic and you did a great job with this first volume. I'm gonna subscribe and watch the other volumes and other comics. Thanks
Best comic book channel ever ..seen lot of other channels but the way dannymalt narrates the stories it sticks with you & feels like watching a movie in the mind ...unlike other channels which gets lost in translation. I wish you covered two comics a week but still I know its hardwrk so am happy atleast getting one
Really happy to find this. Sandman was a comic I found in my public library as a kid. It opened up a whole world of thought to me. Made me really think about stuff differently.
Yes let's go!! I remember reading some of these back in the day from my library but was never able to finish it. I was hoping you'd cover this at some point. This is one series I've always wanted to collect one day
One suggestion I would make is pointing out and quoting significant lines. For example, in the last issue, "You get what everyone gets. You get a lifetime." Important lines like that will help readers understand what's good about this book. In the next one, I would recommend trying to point out some of the things that the recent audiobook wasn't able to convey. Notably, the cereal convention panel discussion where the one female panelist is complaining about the stereotyping of all female members of their group as black widows and killer nurses while she's sitting in between two other panelists who match those stereotypes. This was a great joke, but the audiobook didn't convey it effectively at all. Just my thoughts.
i read sandman when i was 15 and honestly it is the best piece of fiction i've ever read, the art elevates it so much its way better than any book i've ever read. it's so layered you can reread it all the time and still find new things
I hadn't listened to you for a while, I was missing the Sunday morning uploads. I am super glad I listened to you and Vol 1 again. Like catching up with an old friend, Thank you 😊
Thank you! It's been decades since I've read the series, although I love it. Having just watched the first eps of the show, I really wanted to refresh my memory of the original. I appreciate all the work you've put in here.
I love your videos, I was a huge Invincible fan and your videos on them helped me get one of my best friends into it as well so i hope nothing but the best for you.
Thank u for doing this. I need to do some work and this work great as a visual/podcast for me to learn more about The Sandman comics. P/s: Your voice is pretty soothing. I'm looking forward to listen you explain about other comics as well.
Tried to read some of his heady stuff and kinda glaze over but figured a show would be easier to digest, couldn’t get into it but your narration has me locked in. Maybe it’s the comic screens and combo of your glowing personality. Whatever it is, I’m hooked and can’t wait to go back to the other media…thanks, mate!
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I NEEDED THIS VIDEO i keep searching for sandman explained videos to give me an overview of the series to help in reading/watching so i at least know what's happening
If Netflix actually goes through on a Sandman show it has to be animated. I don't feel as though live action would be fitting for this book EDIT: I'm watching the serious as of now. The changing of characters is a bit eh to me, it's staying fairly close [in my opinion] to the source material as of right now but I'm expecting that change (watching ep 7 now)
Thanx so much I’ve tried to get into sandman and could not do it. Now I’m a Sandman Fanboy for life! I love everything I couldn’t understand the first 3x
I'm so happy i found this channel. This is seriously THE BEST!! comicbook channel on RU-vid and i don't understand why Dannymalt doesn't get the same recognition as channels like Comicstorian and Comic Explained 🤷🏾♂️.
Extremely pogged for this!!! Read this for the first time a little while ago because I remembered you mentioning that you’d like to do a series on it someday. Actually I listened to the audiobook version along with reading for the first 2 volumes and it really enriched the experience. So i think this series will be very enjoyable for the first time readers :)
When I first saw this series on Netflix, I thought maybe Neil Gaiman had gotten some inspiration from Piers Anthony's book series "The incantations of immortality." There are some parallels that are noticeable and Anthony had written that series between 83` and 90` but I've since learned this was actually a revival of a DC's 1974-1976 series, "The Sandman," so I guess not. Though I wonder if Anthony got inspiration from the original series then. They're not the same story and I don't think one is a rip off of the other, just some of the underlying stuff is similar.
I'm sure others may have said so,but the 'Sandman Comic' shown wasnt the sandman he was to redo.what was shown was the Jack Kirby 1970s Sandman comic character, but Morpheus is more inspired by the 'Wesley Dodds' Sandman from the 1940s with his Gasmask and sleepgas-gun. It's why Morpheus has a helmet.
In a different universe, in the animated " justice league dark" the dream stone that's chipped, that Constantine wins from the demons 3, is Morpheus' stone.
This is so good. I just finished the first book. I also just finished the 'audiobook retelling' with the voice acting and filler. At the beginning, they clarify that Paul and Alex were partners/lovers. I kinda felt bad for Paul during the audiobook retelling. They also did an amazing job with Cain and Abel. My heart broke for Abel 😭
