The Goode Life Outdoors thank you! Yes, I’ve liked the hollow pins for a long time! I think they are actually most commonly a budget thing for knife makers....but I like em!
Thank you so much for this awesome video. It will be very useful to me. Could you give me a link where to find those beautiful hollow pins ? Thank you again Patrick
Nice work! Nothing "wrong" with using old saw blades or other tool steels for blades. I'd still re-quench the blade once it was profiled though. Use a torch to heat up just the "edge" and quench it in some preheated oil, then sand it clean again and temper it in an oven for a couple hours to get the best possible edge.
Wow Joe! What a great job you did. I wish I could do stuff like you do but that's not going to happen. Keep up the great work. And I hope all is well with you and your family, Be safe and God bless us all from this covid-19. Take care, Chris from Missouri
I did consider that... looked really cool! But I ended up wanting a more comfortable handle and figured I'd probably end up scratching my hand on it once I end up making a belt sheath for it...lol
You should brand that knife and ebay it! I am old school. I can't stand a dull knife. My knives will slice an onion almost paper thin. Ever had a slice of sweet vidalia onion and make a butter and onion sandwich? My grandmother used to make those! I just read on Yahoo the first nurse died of the virus. He was put on a ventilator and didn't last a week. Grrrr.... first responders risk their lives daily but need protection! I just ordered a box of 50 face masks from Walmart. ( I have copd) They are still in stock. Why aren't hospitals doing more for their own? Keep safe, Sir!
thekingtroll2 never had a Vidalia onion sandwich....but I have had a vidalia sweet onion and the way you describe it, it sure sounds like I want to try it now 😋 As for the nurse, yes very sad to hear. So far out here we are still good on supplies as our department is pretty proactive so we still have stock on hand. But we also haven’t had the numbers like NY yet😬
Hey bud. That's awesome.. please give us a project to do with our kids, where we can use less equipment than these expensive ones. Lol .. we tried your wagon before and it went great, we still have it.
John Reinburg thank you John! But don’t worry confidence is something that I still struggle with on projects. Anytime we do something that we haven’t done before or aren’t maybe super proficient at it is a little bit nerve racking. But I just try to take it one step at a time....which is easier said that done. But trust me, I feel it too! You’ll do great😀👍
First - Thank you for being on the front line! Second - That was a good looking knife you made there. Third - To really show how sharp it is, let's see a wet shave with it! ;-)
Fabulous ! ! Looking forward to seeing the knife used on camping trips. etc.. Thank You Joe and all the first responders who are stepping up when you could stay home. I see you're ditching the "Dad-bod". Is there a calendar coming from your station soon? Or Has Mrs. Homesteadonomics quarantined that idea? :-)
KaleidoscopeJunkie haha...no calendar😂. But yeah, my wife probably wouldn’t like it...lol! As for the job, that’s what we signed up for. Just try to do the best we can😀👍
Johnny McCrescent I’ve thought about it for a while. But it would be always out of stock as I usually only make one or two of something before I’m bored and want to do another build😂
Love that you used Mesquite as your handle material. It's such an underrated and underappreciated hardwood. Highly resistant to rot, harder than any oak or maple, super stable once dry, takes glues and finishes pretty well. The only bitch about it is getting long straight pieces and it can be murder on tools. I laughed when you sharpened up the drill bit immediately after telling us about using Mesquite as your knife scales and thought, yup dude knows what he's talking about. And for people who don't know, mesquite grows in the hot, dry areas of the Southwestern USA and Mexico. It takes a long time to get a big enough tree for lumber and because of the wind in these areas, you end up with some pretty gnarled shapes, lots of figure and inclusions. Also, you get sand in your lumber because it blows in, the tree grows and it absolutely eats saw blades and drill bits. Don't ask for long clear boards of mesquite, because they just don't exist. But the color and figure you get out of the pieces is just gorgeous. It's heavy as rocks so maybe don't make a violin or a baseball bat out of the stuff but for all sorts of other things, it's fantastic. Hardness is generally above Hickory and almost approaches some Rosewoods. And chances are if you're anywhere from South Texas to Southern California and The US Mexico border on up to Southern Utah, you can find it everywhere.
Jerome Kukurugya awesome! Give it a shot, it’s a fun project that will turn out better than you think and it will bring about new skills too! I know I learned a bit of patience doing the early cutting out of the knife shape slowly so as to not ruin the temper. I wanted to just blow through it quickly but I knew I had to be patient...and I’m really glad I did now😀👍
Yes that's true, but my idea is to skip forging and heat treating. It introduces a lot of uncertainty to the equation. Your knife turned out really nice.
I have a suggestion for the chicken coop You should make both of the windows on the chicken coop chicken wire and add sliding plexiglass underneath so if it is monsoon rains you can just close the plexiglass also for extra protection but if it is to hot just open the plexiglass for extra ventilation
David Cavan vlogs I have another coop build planned sometime this summer... it will be very similar to my current one, but with some minor modifications and changes. And airflow it definitely on the list😀👍
Chris B wow! Now that would probably make a beautiful handle. I’ve seen some with elk and deer antlers as the scales and they make beautiful handles and feel good too!
cool looking knife Joe. Wine rack from a pallet, been a while since you made one of those maybe you'll need one for the Tequila you could make from chopping all your cactus
uKNOWuLIKE that thanks! I do have a bunch of agave that I could make into tequila....but luckily I don’t really care for it too much. Now it there was a cactus that could be made into whiskey then perhaps😂
Black Riflemen's Organization thank you! The slot is because the tool steel can’t really be drilled through. It’s so hard that it would burn up all but super special abrasive drill bits. So the slot just makes it easier to use conventional tools😀👍
hi, i had a beautiful saw blade knife gifted to me but i am having issues with the blade rusting extremely easily. do you have any suggestions for this? besides the obvious of immediately hand drying of course
Alex Macdonald not sure....I would guess it was a high carbon blade. I’d keep it lightly oiled which should help. Like rem oil or something else that is very light and keeps coverage. But thats just a guess...this is the first knife I’ve made so I’m far from expert 😀👍
Carbon steel = petina. You can get a cool looking black petina simply by soaking it in heated (not boiled) vinegar - white is cheapest and best. If the blade doesn't turn completely black in 15-20 minutes, sand with a very fine grit and repeat. It simply oxygenates the steel before the rust does.
Hi, I have had a tool sharp system for a long time now and use it every time I need to sharpen a chisel or plain blade. I also use the drill doctor that my girlfriend bought me for a long time; it is not the one you showed as mine comes in a clear box and can sharpen knives and scissors as well as the drill bits.
John Fithian-Franks yes, I love the systems! Really making keeping tools and bits sharp and useable. Investment now makes for time savings and money savings later😀👍
Daniel Oliver thank you Daniel! A sheath will come eventually! But for now I gotta get back to a mountain of other projects that have been mounting😂. And you and yours stay safe too!
@@homesteadonomics thanks Joe, I have three retired LACFD friends that are really worried about their FD brothers making paramedic calls and a neighbor that's a Chief in Long Beach FD that's working every day trying to keep his guys safe..... 😷👍👍
Great job Joe! More knives in the future? Proof you can do anything with minimal tool. We're all in lockdown here in Michigan, but I live in the country so not much has changed here besides toilet paper being hard to find. Hope your good too brother! Dan
Bull Dozer thanks Dan! Yep, living rural makes it quite nice! When I’m not at work life is pretty much the same for us as always! Enjoying time with my girls, making stuff... just appreciating the good things we have to be thankful for😀👍
Your videos have been inspirational I pray for my family your family and all our families worldwide your friends in Scottsdale Arizona be safe fellow Arizonian God Bless
how long did it take you to cut it with the angle grinder. i have a saw blade 4milimiters thickness and i also did just like you. light passes with the grinder and spraying with water and it took me so long
I just made a knife from a saw blade, But i accidentally got it too hot while cutting it out and sharpening it. I had to heat treat it, and it shattered in 4 different pieces while in the oil quench lol.
I always wanted to do the saw blade knife build, I think I started when I was younger. it came out good, though! maybe some knurling on the shoulder, for thumb pressure. nothing too serious, though. just some texture for thumb to push against without sliding off.also a slight bevel on the back. rounding it over just a little means the back of the knife doesn't have hard edges that can be harsh on fingers etc. *ponders making a new kitchen knife out of something at some point. I miss having a knoife of my own. broke mine a couple years back.
Tizona Amanthia that sounds like a good project! A kitchen knife would be fun to really add some custom options as size and shape can be really variable😀👍
@@homesteadonomics Very much so. there's a few things I've really though about, having used a kitchen knife A LOT. I"m no pro chef, but enough of a foodie to be the designated dinner maker in houses for the last ten years...for one thing, having a smooth curved transition from blade to handle. the bolster area needs to be curved. so you can get a sponge or wash cloth in there. if you don't you make a dirt magnet spot. also curves are good. hard corners on metal makes for uncomfortable grip. you know that "proper" knife grip of pinching the blade? yeah, you can get a blister on your index finger if the spine of the blade near the grip isn't rounded and soft. aside from that...you need a point for piercing but not too flimsy a tip that it breaks. #rambling.
Nicely done! Would also be cool to use the middle (assuming it's hard aswell) to have hole for a finger grip or just a hole in the blade. Thanks for the vid!
I am during work on my kitchen knife made from a saw. Got an issue which I haven't expected. It gets rusty very quickly. Is there any way how to avoid this?
Liam Kane eventually I will definitely make a sheath.....but I want to get some other things done first. Keep my random video topics steadily random....haha....rainwater harvesting, garden stuff....who knows....haha....got so many things I have on my list😂. But after some of those things then I’ll probably get to a sheath 😀👍
Very, very nice. You took your time and followed your muse.... :) I love the Wicked Edge sharpening system. Not cheap but it will truly put a perfect, polished bevel (or compound bevel) of any specific angle you desire and that blade will be much sharper than a razor blade. "Wicked sharp" Heh. And it's not subject to any of the errors of freehanding it.
Nick Henton I sure hope I get a chance too! I got drawn again this year...which is really not common here in AZ. But it’s for a low success odds unit. But still fun to be out there!!!😀
Yes, I might know him! If you upgrade that knife later with some stainless bolsters on the front, he would engrave it for you and it would make a great combo video.👍😎
This is HSS steel! Not suitable for knife blade! These 'knifemakers' are a joke to real craftsmans. What about to find out some information about steel first? No?
Que curioso. If you can make something useful and valuable out of something that others see as worn out and useless, just think of how a life can be transformed with a little attention and investment 😉👍
EddyGurge it sure is amazing! I used to dread sharpening kitchen knives on a stone. Not that one knife here or there is bad....but a whole drawer was a pain. But with the worksharp it is a breeze😀👍
sweet knife, great repurposing!...very inspirational indeed. :) lol, i also like your idea of using hollow pins for spear tie-down. makes a lot of sense actually. :-|
Very cool, I made a knife in high school metal shop out of a leaf spring but this seems like a great project to do with my two daughters. Now I just need to get them into the shop again. Thank you for sharing, God Bless, stay safe and be well.
Mattie Fattie it will rust a bit if not kept oiled but not much. When I was spraying water during the cutting portion some of the cut off pieces were wet for a long time and only has small bits of rust. So it’s definitely not stainless but it sure isn’t high carbon. But so long as I keep it wiped with a little bit of oil I don’t have much concerns of rust developing
@@homesteadonomics if I had the tools and shop you have I'd for sure make an unpolished butterfly knife. I used to live in AZ and you remind me of a super smart friend I lost touch with when I moved away.
I worked in a sawmill and made many knives for the mill workers. One day the boss told me to stop as one knife was pulled on someone at a pub the same day I made it. Haven't made one for many years now. Nice work, I may need to make one myself. Loved the hollow pin idea.
Another great project, Joe. Stay safe out there on the front lines. Hope and pray your family fares well during these unusual times. Never thought I'd be so busy on the farm during retirement, but everyone wants eggs and I'm planting more gardens to assure an adequate supply of food in the local area.
Mark Jones thank you Mark! My work hasn’t gotten too crazy yet....but AZ is not as hard hit as some states. As for your retirement....I guess that this has been a surprise but I can say that myself and everyone in the world who eats food....greatly appreciates what farmers do! Now even more than ever!😀🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I may or may not ever make knife in the future. Who knows what the future holds. I wasn't planning on being at home this past week either. But, your videos are always a great inspiration. Keep them coming.
I think the only thing I would have done differently, would have been adding more finger protection . . . Good looking knife though, and I'm sure it works good for bush crafting.
thanks so much for checking it out! Yeah some extra depth on that front finger groove might have been a welcome addition. But I'm happy with it so far :)
John Bowen thank you John! I took inspiration from the from some of the knives I’ve acquired over the years. I took inspiration of the drop point blade from one and the handle of another one to make what you see here!
Cool project! I don't have the Ken Onion version, i have the older style. Love it! Hope you guys are staying safe at the FD. I'm catching up on my favorite tubers while on shift myself! GO Red team!
Thanks John! I've got that original version too... had it for about 7-8 years... basically the same as this ken onion one... but I think the ken onion version just has a little more fine tune adjustments. And yes, we are trying to be as safe as possible! thanks and you stay safe on your shift as well! Joe
furlvr1961 thanks! Like most of my builds it’s a one time project, so there won’t be one to sell. But who knows, maybe I’ll make a small run of knives to sell.....but don’t count on it anytime soon😉
Big Sky at Night haha...glad you liked them! I think you’re the first comment mentioning them....I was starting to wonder if people were thrown off by them😂. It was getting late and I figured I needed to jazz it up with something....I was delirious🤪
