Normally I don't do modern stories but made an exception for this one because it's interesting and we don't know what came of it, and probably never will.
In 2018, Ferrari managed to gain a stupid amount of engine power almost overnight, by F1 standards, and at a certain point of the season, the advantage mysteriously disappeared- Leading to accusations that the Scuderia had been trying to cheat the FIA's rules regarding battery power and fuel flow in successive years, as the same thing happened in 2019 as well.
But how did they cheat, if they were? Let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

It’s also possible that Ferrari’s “figuring out” of how a fuel flow sensor worked was achieved in a way that was embarrassing to the FIA (bribery, hacking or poor device security allowing Ferrari to reverse engineer a sensor). This loophole was then closed to them and the FIA-Ferrari confidential agreement was we won’t call your cheating if you don’t call our incompetence. It had to be public there was an agreement as other teams were calling Ferrari cheats in public, having guessed 90% of how.

There was more to a ferrari engine than cheating the fuel sensor apparently. I spoke with a guy who worked for Ferrari and the reason it didn't come out was because it was using tech planned for the Sf90 road car.

@@MrSniperfox29 Which isn't that difficult as proven by the number of cheats the FIA didn't catch on to. Simply put: the FIA are somewhat skilled in making up rules (I say somewhat because a lot of their rules actually end up having the adverse result of what the FIA was expecting) but terrible at enforcing these rules because they seriously lack the expertise and/or brainpower to think things through properly. Take for example the DAS system: Mercedes developed and implied it as an aerodynamical device while constantly discussing it with the FIA. So it was legal. But then Red Bull stepped in and said "hang on guys, this DAS system must also be seen as an active suspension device, as Mercedes is actively changing the setup of the front." Something the FIA "experts" hadn't even considered. When the FIA is só inept at it's core tasks, then it isn't really any wonder that there have been so many cheats in the sports.

@@tjroelsma To be fair, DAS is just the latest in the long line of "yup that's legal, oh wait, someones protested, nope, now that's illegal" that's happened pretty much throughout the history of F1 Mercedes should be happy these days such things aren't immediately banned like the were back in the day, forcing many teams to completely redesign cars on the whim of the FIA and a protest.

just my two cents: 1) Fuel flow: as a control system PhD I still have some concerns about the actual increase in fuel amount -given viscosity and other fluid-mech aspects- you can get in between data samplings at such high rate. But I could be wrong, the fuel could be very "liquid" and the pump can have a very instantaneous reserve of high pressure... Still perplex tough. 2) Dual battery: In my opinion FIA should truly make less stringent everything limiting electric performances. Cars are getting more and more electrified and I miss the point of having caps on instantaneous MGU-K/H KW, el power per lap, batteries, etc. Freedom in those areas would result in more research for EVs, discoveries beneficial for urban mobility and interest from automotive constructors whose trajectory is electrification.

From what I gather from Dutch press, it is assumed Ferrari (also?) pumped fuel into the fuel lines to the engine (past the fuel flow sensor) while off the throttle, to give additional fuel flow coming out of corners. This is the reason for the second fuel flow sensor, which was closer to the engine, and also coincided with the drop in performance. In addition, in Austin (I think?) they ran low downforce to offset the loss in power to make it appear they were still achieving similar top speeds and thus weren't affected by the rules clarification. Ironically this is the opposite to what McLaren did with Honda in their last year together, where they intentionally ran very high downforce to show high cornering speed and low top speed so they could blame Honda for poor performance. Honda wasn't great, exactly, but neither was McLaren itself at that point.
@AidanMillward
@AidanMillward 2 года назад
Pretty much, yeah. They had to run less downforce to go as fast in both 18 and 19 and it shagged them in the corners.

There's a difference between cheating and finding a loophole in the regulations. It's clear Ferrari were doing clever stuff, but as the FIA couldn't prove it, any reference to cheating is just an allegation. It's pretty clear the FIA were keen to close the loophole, and avoid having to go through a protracted process where they were forced to admit they couldn't prove Ferrari were cheating, and Ferrari were keen to avoid a protracted process where they would keep saying they were in compliance to the wording of the regulations.

Aidan please do a story on how Mercedes found half a second of pace in 2021, from Brazil onwards, just when they needed it. That should be interesting reading.
@AidanMillward
@AidanMillward 2 года назад
Pretty easy to explain: they took the engine penalty that would have sent Lewis back to about 9th as a minimum, and with there only being four races left at that point they only had to run it for four races instead of seven. They’d trialled this “plan” with Bottas at Monza, just in case they needed to take an engine penalty later on in the season. The simple matter is, they figured out exactly how hot to run it for those four races and ran it. But they only used this “warp drive” in Brazil and Abu Dhabi and put the old one in for Qatar and Arabia. Oh, and they figured out the issues with the car setup. It had a very narrow setup window (like the 94 Williams) and it was only from sort of Russia onwards they cracked it.
@Olivyay

It was not just from Brazil, they already had more pace in Italy and Turkey, it was just not as obvious because it's easier to overtake at Interlagos.

This is not "bending the rules" by any stretch. It is blatant cheating. The fuel flow limit is explicit in the regulations. They developed a mechanism whose entire point was to _evade detection_ that they were breaking the regulation. They did not "bend" anything or find any "loopholes". It's an impressive engineering feat, but entirely unsportsmanlike cheating (a la Toyota WRC turbo restrictor).

@robh9577
@robh9577 2 года назад
The engines are frozen as part of the rules. The only time you are allowed to change a part is under "reliability" grounds. Bottas had 4 engines changed due to "reliability concerns" which was code for "we are running them at the maximum output and hurting them on purpose to find reasons to change parts to give Lewis a maximum output engine for the final few races" But it's a rules grey area that F1 has not closed. 1st engine is a 10 place grid drop and any other after that is only a 5 place. It's an open invitation for abuse, the grid drops should become more and more severe the more engines you take.

In the end, it's all stupid politicking and you can never truly enjoy a race because there's going to be someone complaining and the spectacle more often than not gets tainted in some way or another. Makes you question the term "clean racing" (I know what's meant by it but there's so many implications that complicate it).
@AidanMillward
@AidanMillward 2 года назад
It’s a fine line to tread. If it doesn’t specifically state in the rules you can’t do it (double diffuser, f duct, DAS, fan car etc) then I say it’s fair game. But when the rule book specifically tells you not to do it and a team is knowingly taking the piss with it, then I’d say the other teams are in the right to protest. It’s not so much “we didn’t think of that first so ban it”, it’s more “we’re obeying the rules, the one that tells us not to do it. Why are they allowed to carry on?”

If I remember rightly, the fuel sensor was timed to measure fuel flow every hundredth of a second, and Ferrari had worked out a way of squirting in extra fuel in tiny pulses in between measurements so it was un-detectable. Also I fully, fully believe that if Mercedes or Honda had come up with it, the response/ public narrative would have been "that's technically against the regulations, if you stop doing it then no punishment necessary. Well done for being so clever and finding a loophole though, we're closing it for next season." But because Ferrari did it the response was "dirty cheats who deserve to be punished."

I don't get, why they didn't just slap on some more wing so that their advantage wasn't on the straights but in the corner. That way, nobody would suspect the engine, but say the have better aero or a clever suspension. But no, they had to dump it all on the straight because "aerodynamics is for people who can't build engines, mamma mia!!"

F1 is as much about who can be sneakiest and get away with it, as it is about racing cars. But, that’s part of the intrigue. I suspect the damage to Ferrari’s name/brand by being publicly named ‘cheats’ was unacceptable, so it happened behind closed doors. It’s all fun and games until a huge brand takes a public beating. I expect they would do the same for other teams as well (especially Merc or Red Bull), that seems to be the direction things are going. We don’t want anyone getting hurt, do we...

About Baku 2017. Yes, Lewis never touched his brake. If you watch the TV replay where they were showing Lewis' telemetry, you see that he starts to launch, and then he lifts. With the way F1 cars take off, a lift after a launch is as good as hitting the brakes for the car behind. I find it interesting that they stopped showing telemetry on screen after that. :-/

Personally i kinda think that fuel flow restrictions are silly in racing. Fuel weighs the car down, and so you have to carry more if you plan on burning more. There is so little to compete in when the engine type and even the fuel flow amount is regulated to be exactly same for everyone. Granted we fans won't really even realize how much or how little freedom the teams have been given for the new reqs before the car reveals start happening, but I fear F1 is slowly becoming more of stock racing sport, all as a result of trying to give the fans a fairer competition to watch.
@peterthomas5792

@yommish

Isn’t limiting fuel something that’s been in racing for ages? There’s always been a maximum fuel tank size since I can remember. Or are you you suggesting to only limit fuel capacity and not consumption rate? Either way you have X liters and it’s gotta last you Y laps while going as fast as possible. Restrictions are always going to limit power whether it’s displacement, compression, fuel burn, capacity, or whatever. Sure you can have no restrictions like Can-Am but then it becomes all about funding and engineering and not racing on the track.

Another top-notch video. It is really good to see Ferrari's ass-hattery called out instead of it being swept under the rug. They've been holding f1 to ransom since I started following it in the mid 70s with threats to leave, veto on rules etc. Another thing I've heard from various sources is that for 2020 they were not only running a legal engine for a change but also a form of restriction for the season as punishment to embarrass them. I think this also explains part of the relative bounce back for 2021. They really haven't come that far from the Enzo days of "aero is for people who can't build engines" and referring to a lot of constructors as "assemblatore". Once the hype and emotion is stripped off they are an upper midfield team with near unlimited resources and occasional scams of being front runners when viewed over the entire history of f1. Keep up the outstanding, informative and entertaining work, and not ignoring the 800lb of elephant s**t in the lounge room.

The mercedes engine "was designed to run for 3 races" excuse is bullsh*t. 1. When redbull made enough noise in Brazil and said they would protest the results if they ran the rear wing in Saudi Arabia, the advantage went away. They were still more powerful but not ridiculous and more in line with their explanation that the engine was designed to run for less races. 2. Lewis was pulling cars in from over a second away at the end of straights. You can't get a 30 kph speed delta by making an engine run harder. It has to be combined with drag reduction in a way that was at least bending the rules. 3. If they could gain that much performance advantage (i.e; overtaking people from a second back) legally, people would be swapping out engines more often. That is too much of an advantage to give up. Because it only happened for one race and redbull won eventually, this was swept under the rug just like Ferrari in 2018. I hate it when British people are biased like this.
