The Scariest Shotgun Slug you'll ever see

In this video we have the pleasure of showing you a new expanding steel slug by Gualandi in Italy. These will be for sale in the U.S. late May/early June. As lead is being banned around the world, ammo manufacturers are preparing for the inevitable by producing ammo out of alternative metals like brass, copper and steel. The trick is to make a metal like steel, function like a expanding lead projectile.

CujoSuki Hmmmm. Well, I can't say I know of anyone who uses a select fire rifle chambered in an intermediate caliber as their home defense weapon. I do know people who use AR-15 and AKM rifles that are appropriately outfitted to enhance target identification and acquisition. I personally believe an AR-15 or a full size double stack 9mm handgun is the best choice for HD. Your opinion may differ.

I remember reading that early warships with mussel loading cannons would often use chain link cannon balls to rip down masts and sails. (And cut fleshy things in half.) (Excuse the pun) I keep looking at my lathe thinking I need to get around to making something wild for you guys.

A spline shaft of the right diameter and spline count could be cored out almost up to the valleys but with enough metal left to withstand being shot. The core hole could be filled with lead and the nose of the slug could be lathed or ground to a slightly beveled speaker cone like shape. A circumferential cut could be made about 1/4" down from the end and almost down to the valleys to facilitate spreading on impact but enough metal to hold the splines in place while being shot. That would leave a small solid tail ring section behind it that should shred everything behind the lead slug. Several short triangular pieces of spline separating from the slug and splaying outward (shredding your body armor) allows the lead core to get maximum penetration. You should probably never even try to make anything like that though.

You should have taken more time investigating the smooth bore with these shells cos I've only seen one other round take the best into your dummy... think it was the double mega ball. I'm wondering: what were the comparitive muzzle velocities, did it help that the petals never opened and was it a case of getting a new vest to see if the other one was to blame due to damage? Other than that, your hot steel loads were very penetrating... x

Looks similar to Remington Copper Solids. If you remember those. A saboted boat tail bullet with pedals, machined from a piece of copper. If shot through grass or brush the pedals would deflect them every which way. They grouped ok from a very clean smoothbore. But if I shot a few lead slugs first and got a little leading in the barrel. They flew all over.

The spark was probably made by those "leaves" colliding against themselves and the center "ball" portion. Far as I know, lead does not produce sparks when struck against an object. Also, the sparks were orange, which is indicative of steel-on-steel contact (steel makes orange sparks, while aluminum makes white sparks by contrast.)

I'm so torn. I really love the engineering behind projectiles like this. However, the critical thinking portion of my brain refuses to see a projectile that intentionally sheds mass as an effective round. I'm sure that this is devastating to soft tissue. What shotgun slug isn't? Nonetheless, I enjoyed the video!

if you ever had to shoot someone on drugs you would appreciate a shell like this. I shot a man on drugs with steel foul shot and after catching the man on drugs it took us another hour before it was known that he was shot. Every shoot someone and they got back up and fired back at you?
@wreck_ignition7847
@wreck_ignition7847 8 лет назад
Lawrence M. I haven't shot anyone that got back up. I can't see how that would change with a shotgun. I've also never shot someone just to wound them. I have seen how other ammunition with 'petals' tested against flesh and bone and they never do well with ribs. It's still pretty cool looking.
@bepis2679
@bepis2679 8 лет назад
But when it loses mass, the velocity increases, and as a result the kinetic energy increases.
@wreck_ignition7847
@wreck_ignition7847 8 лет назад
Seymore Butts. The velocity doesn't increase. Throw a handful of marbles into the air. When they separate, their rate of deceleration is not altered. Unless this projectile has a secondary propulsion system that I didn't see. Are these made by NASA?
@bepis2679
@bepis2679 8 лет назад
It's called conservation of momentum. If the projectile has a given momentum, rho, (rho = m*a) it is the product of the projectiles mass and acceleration. If the projectile loses mass, it must gain acceleration to conserve its original momentum. That means it has a higher velocity. Kinetic Energy = (1/2)m*v^2 The velocity makes up more of the energy than the mass.
@AllanDeGroot
@AllanDeGroot 8 лет назад
What causes the spark? the velocity (kinetic energy) converting back to heat...Since the target is lead I will presume some part of the projectils is being heated by impact to the flask point of steel.You will often see this when shooting at a steel plate with most centerfire rifles

I have got a few rounds that are just like that, one of my family members works for DHS (Department of Homeland Security). Anyways, what he told me was, in the area they're working in they use different ammo (i can't say why), but i was able to get a few of these new high tech 12ga shotgun rounds, instead of lead or steel these are all copper an look a lot like these ones in the video, they expand upon impact of a soft target. Long story short, they're pretty rare im guessing, i wish i could say more but i don't wanna get anyone in trouble.

Even if a vest stopped it imagine the damage the impact would do to a person

These are some of the more impressive slugs that I've seen that have a unique or different design.

I use Underwood Critical Fracture HP in my Glock 29, basically the same thing but copper and 10mm. Bookmarked the retailer and will order a testing batch, thanks for the review.

that spark was an electrical discharge, metal projectile rubbing its feet on the proverbial rug then touching ground.

It's a sabot slug. I'm less worried about flechette like pieces of shrapnel and more worried about the massive amount of kinetic energy that round produces.

that weird spark you see when you hit the lead is probably just some molten lead being spewed out. if you've ever hit lead with a hammer a bunh you know that lead gets hot when you hit it. so if you hit it with a peice of steel going 1300 fps you're gonna create some serious heat.

I’m pretty sure it did open up on the Kevlar, it had trapped it in the teeth, the kinetic energy being discharged as into the torso as it stopped must have caused the slug to revert to its original form

In Soviet times in the 70-80s I had such bullets, only without a central expander. The petals of a bullet open themselves when they hit the body of an animal. The bullets were brass with slits on the machine. Petals with very sharp opening were obtained.

Fiocchi loads them commercially as N-EX-S slugs - hard to get by too but an option to all that don't want to reload their own slugs.
