Going for the insanity is the dumbest thing ever unless you are up for death penalty. They can't execute you if you are deemed legally insane. But mental hospitals for the criminally insane are way way worse places than prisons. There are some very ill, unpredictable and violent people there.

Yeah on top of that that defense gets attempted in only 1 percent of criminal cases and is only successful in 1 percent of those cases. It’s not nearly as common as people think and not a typical or useful defense.
