The Scene That Took Cheers Off the Air for Good

After a long run of eleven successful seasons, the hit NBC show Cheers sadly came to an end, which left many diehard fans brokenhearted and without a favorite TV sitcom. Characters that audiences had become attached to and had fallen deeply in love with were suddenly gone and the bar that you could go to where everybody knew your name was closed for good.

Now, we all know TV shows get canceled all the time. That’s not anything out of the norm. This is usually due to low ratings, when there are feuds between the show’s cast members, or when a network says that it’s time to go.
But when a show is doing well with ratings and audiences are still invested in the storylines and characters (as was the case with Cheers), it can seemingly make little sense as to why a hit and beloved TV show goes off the air and off our TV screens.
That’s basically what happened with the comedy Cheers. The show was a fan favorite among viewers and a sitcom that many people consider an all-time absolute classic. It even had a highly coveted spot during NBC’s ‘Must See TV’ lineup. So why would a successful show like Cheers suddenly come to an end instead of carrying on for eleven (okay, maybe that’s a few too many) more seasons?

Actually right around the 5:49 mark is where they hint the show ended (or started it's decline) when Shelley Long left the show. Also repetitive storylines were to blame.

All the episodes were good. I started watching Cheers when I was 11 years old. Then moved on to Fraiser. These have to be the best written and acted comedies from the USA. I'm British and the humour is very close ours. I wouldn't be surprised if the writers were influenced in some way by British humour. Superb 👍

I have a lot of favorite episodes from memory- One of my favorites off the top of my head is the one where Frasier meets Lilith. Their marriage did turn out to be a horrible train wreck though. Diane's exit from the show was NOT AT ALL the 'beginning of the end'- 'Cheers' basically went from strength to strength without her. It's original heyday was when her character was on.

THE SCENE THAT TOOK CHEERS OFF THE AIR, IT WASN'T A SCENE, IT WAS BECAUSE TED WHO PLAYED SAM LEFT..What happened was Ted Danson, the actor who portrayed Sam Malone in Cheers, didn't want to be in the show anymore after spending 11 years as that character. The show's creators knew they couldn't run the show without one of it's most memorable characters, and so stopped making it once Ted Danson left.
@dimelo8826
@dimelo8826 3 месяца назад
Yeah, they mention this in video 😂. But they didn’t stop making it after Sam, they tried to see where they can take the show and have Woody run the bar but Woody didn’t want to be sure he was close to Ted. Probably not necessarily because of doing that to Ted, but understandably, Woody would be undermined or feel secondary. Like sloppy seconds.

Sam the ladies man finally deciding to settle down and being so sure about his decision when he envisions them years later as a old married couple and them being happy together. They decide to postpone the marriage so Diane can finish a book that's about to get published. At the very end as Diane is leaving Sam knows he will never see her again and tells her to have a good life which Diane asks him why he would say that when she is coming back in 6 months. Sam agrees with her, they then hug and say their good byes and as she walks out the door Sam says very quietly "Have a good life" and then they cut to the scene of them being old and married years later.

It’s not really Sam’s show even though he owns the bar. Night Court isn’t Dan Fielding’s show either. It’s an ensemble. It takes all of them to fire on all cylinders. Think about it. When Coach left, you needed Woody to fill the gap. Think about the bailiffs from Night Court. Didn’t finally crystallize till Roz showed up, and you needed Christine to counterbalance Dan. Rebecca just didn’t fill in the gap when Diane left Cheers.

This is complete nonsense. Shelley Long left because she wanted a film career, and because of friction with the cast/crew. It had nothing to do with "repetitive writing". The show was a ratings powerhouse for the entire 11 seasons. Many people actually prefer the Kirstie Alley period to the Shelley Long period. What finally ended the show was Ted Danson's refusal to continue past season 11.
