One wouldn’t think of Leave it to Beaver as being a stylistically unique show, however. It didn’t take experiments with its style of storytelling.
That is, until the final episode. The final episode had a scene that was incredibly unusual for the time period. This scene also confirmed to the audience that Leave it to Beaver was going to get taken off air.
In many ways, Leave it to Beaver wasn’t afraid to take risks like other shows. While it may seem wholesome and risk-averse, it was released at a time when television was beginning to experiment with edginess.
For example, Leave it to Beaver remained in black and white at a time when color was growing in popularity. It took a lot of effort to transition to color and the producers felt it wasn’t worth it. Nevertheless, the show remained popular and is remembered as one of America’s best sitcoms.
But what really made Leave it to Beaver such a groundbreaking show is that it was told from the child’s point of view. Many other popular shows focused on adults and lived entirely in the adult world. Leave it to Beaver showed the innocence and sweetness of childhood in America.
As we look back on reruns of Leave it to Beaver, we should appreciate the incredible talents of the cast and crew who brought the show to life. We must remember the impact it had on America in the 1950s and 1960s and why today, there’s still so much to learn from the troublesome Beaver Cleaver!
Watch this video to learn more about the scene that took Leave it to Beaver off the air. Learn about how the show came to be, why it was so special, and its enduring legacy.

Sometime in the early 1970s, a TV station in Boston decided to air Leave It to Beaver every morning and I was able to watch it before I had to leave for work. The show was shown in order so as time went on, you were able to watch the Beaver grow up until the last episode. The next day, the show would start with the very first episode. I was finally able to see every one of the shows. Still think it was one of the better TV shows that has been put on TV over the years.

Some of my favorite episodes were of Beaver visiting Gus at the Fire Station. How old was he? Maybe 5, 6? Those were the times back in the day, when kids could roam around their neighborhood and not be worried about people harming them. There was a true innocence and I grew up in that era and miss it.

I'll be 67 on my next birthday and have been watching it since I was a kid. Better to have watched it to the end and watch it on reruns than have the characters recanted to today's pc standards. I also prefer to watch an old show in bl/w than have it colourised; nothing messes up film history than having a colour story in a time when you knew colour tv movies didn't exist yet. Exceptions like " The Elephant Man" were ok, because the mood was more important than it going in colour. Barbara Billingsley was funny in "Airplane" as the lady who spoke Jive. Is she in anyway related to Peter (in "A Christmas Story") or John (Dr. Phlox in "Enterprise")?

What basically happened is that Beaver grew up, and was no longer the cute little kid who originally captured the hearts of the audience. I give the producers credit for knowing that it was time, and for avoiding that all too common error of introducing another little kid to the cast in the hope that the continuing "cute factor" would allow the show to stay on longer. So many shows have tried that strategy, and it has failed miserably.

I have no problem with goodie goodie programs due to my relatuonship with Christ. But it is ok to talk controversial as long as it is not done in an immoral manner and not explicit. Like, there was a faith based movie where the husband committed adultery but they did not show him kissing the woman or half naked or ready to jump in bed, or seductive talk. Another faith based movie, a bad boy got shot out of self defense. Just one shot, but you did not see him get shot, you just heard the gun go off and you saw the bad boy on the ground praying asking for forgiveness of his sins. He was already laying on ground and you did not see the bullet hitting him causing him to drop.

To be honest it was homegenized and depicted the wifes place in the home and dad as the bread winner. Nor did accurately reflect home life in the average American household. This is the time when the Vietnam war was kickin into high gear and refer madness was permeating the culture and parents blamed that on that infernal R&R.
@Dixler683
@Dixler683 2 года назад
@@UserName_no1 to be honest the Vietnam conflict did not escalate until 1965 under LBJ . It did not kick into high gear until 1967, four years after the shows ending. The commie agenda as laid out in their 45 point plan along with the liberals have brought us to the shithole culture we are today. No swearing, no prima Donna kids, no sex shown between the parents, no disrespecting the parents in this show. Leave it to Beaver set a high standard and the participants lived up to a high moral ground. So sad that today’s kids will never know that kind of civility and decency.

@holyexperience1976 2 года назад
Out of fairness, a lot of Prima Donna kids have/had Prima Donna parents. Discipline needs to be back up by parental acting right themselves. Too many adults not act right today so cannot talk about youth acting wrong. It is worse how adults act because adults are to know better unless they have true mental challenges where they cannot know what they are doing ( like Dementia ) Also,because adults are free to choose for themselves where youth do not get to choose for themselves as they are not legally responsible for themselves like adults are and are in learning stage of life depenxing on adults for examples. Anyone who knows Prima Donna kids maybe sometimes helo them out, talk kindly with them instead wanting to just slam them, pray for them. Also, do not forget you were not perfect yourself growing up and as a youth you wish you did not have to answer to any adult. But there are parents who truly try to raise their kids right, but youth are not robots they are human with free will like we have free will. Some youth are not going to stop swearing because getting butt ripped off for a billionth time. Some are not fazed by consequences like many adults do not stop doing something wrong after facing prison time. My parents did not raise me to sleep outside of marriage and have a kid, but I did, at age 27. Not their fault. At some point I deeply worse than regret it. My parents disbelief in that came from Jesus, and my own relationship with Jesus at some point made me feel beyond remorseful.

Life was never really like that for the majority of American families. Who had a mother that wore high heels and pearls to do housework? Or a father almost always in a suit at home? Come on! I do love this show for its heart though. Just the same, the adults were so stiff, too many stereotypes of men’s roles vs. women’s roles (I know it was the 50’s/60’s…, still….😵‍💫), and ZERO diversity. (They did have a “Spanish boy” on once from South America, in an episode called “Beaver & Chuey”, who though the creators must have thought was speaking “Spanish”, had an extremely heavy American accent, and used all the wrong words and grammar….Anyway, the ignorance of the creators towards Hispanics was extremely evident here.) Beaver was a sweet, innocent when he was little. He was trailing after the older boys, but not always accepted. He got into trouble out of innocence. When he got older this made him look dumb. You'd think that with all of the trouble that Beaver's friends got him into that his parents would have him associate with better kids. There was an episode in the first Season where the Clever boys became friends with the sons of the Junk man. This was a rare episode that display prejudice on the part of June, who didn't want them associating with the sons of a Junk Man. That was a rare, subtle comment on social prejudice issues minus the racial aspect. There was another episode where June selfishly made the boys stay home and miss a Carnival they were planning to attend because her Aunt Martha was coming to visit. There were other episodes where mistakes made by both parents were featured, and the parents learned about their mistakes through the boys. So there was learning and resolution on both levels in these episodes.

Kids grow up so fast. It’s amazing how fast they outgrow their characters. Trouble is, TV executives nowadays seldom recognize this until too late. Young actors are often made to stay within an immature character until it looks cring worthy. Urchle on Family Matters is a good example.

From what I have read the actors in the family and many of the supporting actors were truly decent and good people. The kids were treated well. Hugh Beaumont was a part-time Pastor when he got the role. He wrote a number of the scripts so that they always had a moral in mind. Barbara Billingsley had her own kids in real life and would make suggestions so that she was doing what a real mother would do rather than some of the original dialog in the scripts. Tony Dow later directed a number of the X Factor episodes. Most of the actors were hopelessly typecast. Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell), when interviewed at old TV show conventions was sometimes told that he was more like Ward Cleaver than Eddie. He agreed and thanked them for the compliment. Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow both said Ken was the most talented actor on the show because he was so different than his character.

Hard to believe that there actually was an era like the one depicted on this show. But, I lived it so I know it's true. In those days, 1950's, responsible adults ruled the society. I was taught manners from an early age and expected to behave appropriately. There was consistent consequences for misbehavior as well as reward for doing the best to my ability and playing to win not just "get by". I learned the value of hard work and how to "earn" a reward. I could trust authority figures such as teachers and police officers. Not to say everything was better then, because it wasn't but it would be nice to live in a world with that much trust and civility again.

In the 1950s, before automatic deposits, cell phones, and EFTs, Friday night's were a different routine than today. Friday was payday for almost everyone who worked. Fathers would come home, wash and change, and round up the family in the car. First stop, the bank to cash the paycheck, and, if you were one of the few families to have a checking account, make the deposit. A small portion went into savings or "Christmas Clubs" that took a dollar a two per week for 50 weeks and dissolved the account just before Christmas. The next stop was the grocery store/supermarket. Then home for supper. The remaining money was apportioned into envelopes: house payment, car payment, utilities, Sears/Aldens/Montgomery Ward payments, insurance, and gas money for the weeks work. If there was leftover money, both parents double checked to make sure no bills were omitted and then a Saturday night drive-In movie would be indulged or extra would be put aside for Christmas. So, moving a tv show to Thursday night was a wise move.

We had seven kids in our family so our family only had a night out on very special occasions! Friday nights my big sister made us pizza burgers. They were so good! We had spaghetti on Saturday night. My Mom always had special meals she rotated on Sunday meals. We really looked forward to those times. Every Sunday night after church my Mom would cut a half gallon block of ice cream into nine blocks! What a treat! Good memories! Thanks Mom and Dad!

Not much different from the routine in our house when I was a child in the mid 40's to late 50's, except Dad cashed his check before he got home. He cleaned up, we ate supper, and then we went grocery shopping, Mom, Dad and us 3 kids. No body was left at home to fool around. After grocery shopping, we would stop at the Eagles Club, where we kids sat at a table in a corner, and the folks had a couple glasses of beer, costing 7 to 10 cents each. Us kids got a bottle of Orange Crush to share and a candy bar each. That was our big treat each week! On Saturday morning, Dad and my brother and I would watch the cartoons together, while my sister did whatever Mom was doing. Sunday morning, everybody went to church as a family. Even when my brother and I lived at home as young adults before marriage, Dad said that if we went out on Saturday night, we better be in church on Sunday morning, or be packing our bags when they got home from church. No ands, ifs or buts! They are all gone now - I miss those happy times.

You might want to hear my story. I grew up watching "Leave it to Beaver". I grew up and became an LA PD Officer. Many years ago while working Venice Beach, I was conducting an investigation aroung 8:00pm next to Venice Blvd. I was busy, getting information regarding my call. Out of the corner of my eye I observed a father and his nine year old son approach. I heard the father tell his son "stand back and do not disturb the Officer". At this moment I looked up and saw Wally all grown up with his son. I immediately went back to my investigation and never looked back. Later on that night while driving home, I thought to myself, "all this time I have been watching leave it to Beaver", and now Wally and his son were watching me. For some families it was toxic. Many of my friends had parents who fought in public and share their dirty linen with the neighbors. It was nothing like the families on TV and made some of us hope that we'd ultimately discover we were adopted.

Madelyn, I've watched several episodes of Leave It To Beaver. The show always struck me as being the opposite of toxic. When you say the program is toxic, are you referring to Eddie Haskell ?

I am a big fan. One reason I like the show is because almost every problem Beaver had, so did I.

Leave It To Beaver showed a loving family with real life adventurers of a husband and wife, and two young boys. The Beaver was so well done that it has become timeless in new generations of viewers to love and relate too.

My favorite episode was when Beaver climbed a sign board to see why the cup of coffee steamed. He fell into the cup and couldn't get out. Wally looked for him. He found him. He called the fire department to get him out. Now my kids are 53 and 49. I understand how and why Beaver did that. Its still one of the funniest thing I ever saw.

That was just one of the things I love so much about this show…they kept the very same cast throughout the whole series run! The show would’ve never worked without the original Beaver! ❤️

It’s misleading: The final episode of the series had the family looking at old photos in the family album which led to flashback film clips from earlier episodes. They weren’t yanked off the air due to something shocking it was simply the final episode doing something that’s pretty common now-filling an episode with clips from other episodes.

On Season 6, unlike the previous 5 seasons of Leave It To Beaver, Beaver no longer wear a baseball cap. Also, Beaver does not wear a baseball cap in the few episodes of season 5.

I was born 6 years after the show aired. Watched it in reruns. When I was in 3rd grade I thought that Miss Ellie on Dallas was played by the same actress that was the Beavers mom. No, my mother sat me straight that Barbara Billingsley and Barbara Bel Geddes are two different people!
