Jeff Purvis … Never Nervous Purvis. This week in the first of what will be two installments of our interview, Jeff talks about getting into racing on dirt, his transition to asphalt, how he first got together with team owner James Finch and one of the very best cheating in racing stories that you’ll ever hear.

Jeff Purvis is the nicest guy in racing i ever met..... Ive met him many many times and spoke in TN and in garage at the tracks... I was a 12 or 13 year old kid calling Jeff to put together a deal thru the Battery company that sponsored him at time.... He treated me so nice as i tried to get him and a showcar deal to come to our Parts Junkyard "We sold new & used Batteries" ... His folks gave me his personal # and he could have blown me off but was so kind.... This was 1993-1997 time as he took over Bonnetts ride and then drove the David Lee Murphy cars into the Lance snacks cars..... I was crushed when he got hurt in crash with Biffle... He and Pepper Newby and other dirt heros came to my local short track... Jeff Purvis never knew how much of an impact he had on my pre-teens.....

Probably the best driver in Winston Cup who never had the opportunity for a full time ride. A winner in the Busch Series, ARCA, All Pro, USAC (dirt) Late Models, and the All Star Circuit of Champions. Won the ARCA 200 at Daytona, the All American 400, the Winchester 400, and the World 100. A wheelman.

I spent every Friday night at Interstate Raceway/I79 Raceway back in the 80's/90's. Track that was right across the road from Rocket Chassis driveway. When Purvis showed up, everyone knew they were running for 2nd. If he didn't break/flat tire he'd win by 1/2 lap. I mean it was like his car was 500lbs lighter (don't remember there being scales?) and had 300HP more. On every start/restart he would pull 1/4-1/2 lap over 2nd in two laps. It was embarrassing how much faster he was. Loved it!

@@gailtaylor1636 Awesome. It's now owned by Mark Richards (CEO of Rocket Chassis). He really made it an amazing facility. Alot like Eldora. Only problem is he made it a 5/8 mile track!!!! 7/16 mile imo would have been Perfect! If you don't have 1100 H.P. don't waste your time or equipment. WoO Sprints will love it.

@@T1C45 Might want to check your facts. That property was purchased by guy that runs the automobile auction on adjoining property. The track I'm talking about was graded flat. It's all gone.

I love Jeff Purvis , he was always nice and friendly to me as a kid at the dirt tracks, I have several pics of him on dirt , the guy was unbelievable and holds the best record for wins compared to attempts to win the World 100. True gentleman with loads of natural talent .

I don't know what year this was. Or why it isn't talked about more. I can remember him at the World 100. He would lose ignition. Just about coming to a stop. Went in the hotpit once. He came through the field and won. Rayburn car and Baker engine. The engine had special heads to were eventually outlawed

Listening to Jeff brings back a lot of memories from my childhood, watching him race at the Talladega Short Track.Earl Jones would outrun Jeff, and being the competitor he was,he didn't like it at all ! It's great to see Jeff doing well after his horrific injuries, It's a real shame his career was cut short by them.

CJ Rayburn Jeff mentioned lived and built dirt and asphalt cars from his home in Whiteland Indiana. My old boss was good friends with him along with figure 8 driver Charlie Reed right next door and NHRA Champion Bob Glidden at the end. Sadly CJ and Bob are no longer with us. 😢

I used to love watch Jeff hustle a dirt race car around the old Atomic Speedway (RIP) and Smokey Mtn Speedway! Doggone, he was one of the best. Edit, I knew that Jeff experienced a severe head injury in the past. Noticed in the video that he never moved his left arm, only his right. Is that a lingering effect of the injury or has he had a stroke?

Steve he has not had a stroke. I have known Jeff since i was a kid. He got hit driver side door, Since then and after the hauler wreck on the way to the Talladega short track he has had several surgeries since then. Everything he had repaired after the wreck he reinjured after the hauler wreck. He was having his best year ever when he took the big hit at Nazareth. He was getting ready to get a full time cup ride no doubt.

@@justinseay9517 That's great news! Thank you for replying. I remember that terrible crash at Nazareth and the hauler fire. I believe that they were headed to Deep South Raceway when the fire happened on I-65 south. My ex-wife's parents lived near there. I didn't know about a hauler wreck too. Like I said, I used to love to watch Jeff and some of the other NDRA pro's hustle around a dirt track back in the day.

No shame in that. Everyone was cheating one way or another back then. Ask Jack Haudenchild. 🤣😆 Hell, even my Dad running Semi-Lates in the early 80's was finding a way. It wasn't called cheating it was called finding something.
