That's inductive reasoning, not deductive...

"That's called deductive reasoning." Um, no, I don't think it is. I think it's called inductive reasoning, which is quite different.

Pegasus I mean it’s not that different... just switched the order around basically

@@intelligenceiskey5046 Sorry, I don't understand. Deductive and inductive reasoning are fundamentally different. The first leads to irrefutable conclusions. The other yields assumptions and, at best, probabilities. You'll have to explain to me what order was switched around to make them "not that different."

Pegasus I’m talking about the concept, inductive reasoning has an observation then a conclusion, deductive starts with a theory and uses experimentation to say try to prove this theory. Also, inductive reasoning doesn’t lead to irrefutable conclusions, that’s stupid. Like I’m the video, just because he concludes those things from his observations, doesn’t nessicarily mean they are true. This is what I mean by it’s switched, as inductive reasoning starts with an observation then develops s theory, where as deductive starts with a theory.

Pegasus I read your comment wrong, as it says deductive reasoning leads to irrefutable conclusions, which would be true in a perfect world, but it’s obviously not practically. Even so, the general concept is what I was talking about anyway, not the little details, so the point still stands.

@@intelligenceiskey5046 It sounds like you and I have learned quite different definitions of inductive vs. deductive reasoning. Here's what I learned (wrong or right): DEDUCTIVE REASONING: Premises: All dogs are mammals. Butch is a dog. Conclusion: Butch is a mammal. Note that there is no experimentation needed. It's pure logic. INDUCTIVE REASONING: "My pet Butch bit the mailman today." Conclusion: "Oh, your pet is a dog." This would need experimentation (further observations) to confirm. So on this point we agree. The conclusion arrived at through inductive reasoning can be incorrect. It produces, as you said, a theory (or perhaps more accurately, a hypothesis).
