Welcome to science at home episode nine, season three. In this episode we will be building the simplest electric train. The simplest electric train is another type of homopolar motor and it can also be called a magneto-electric train. The simplest electric train works by harnessing the magnetic field generated when a current passes through a coiled copper wire, to push and pull magnets on the train. This train is homopolar because its polarity is constant as it functions. By the end of this video you will be able to describe why the train moves, how magnetic forces can be used to do work and how to build the simplest electric train also known as a homopolar motor or magneto-electric train.

Hi, will this work with two magnets glued south-to-south inside an enameled wire tube with an external power connected on the ends of the coil? Seems like a simple question, but I can't seem to figure if the forces outside the magnets will cancel those inside resulting in no movment.
@feelthebluesgaming7630
@feelthebluesgaming7630 Год назад
I was wondering the exact same thing, please answer this!!! Based on this explanation, it should be possible to stick the magnets on either side of an insulting material with this orientation, and have an external power source run a current through the wire. I am hesitant to say this will work tho
@ilian334
@ilian334 Год назад
@@feelthebluesgaming7630 I posted this question a long time ago. Now I know this will not work. The force created by the magnetic field of outside poles going through the current-carrying coil cancels the one created by the inside poles perfectly.

@milaanvigraham8664
@milaanvigraham8664 5 лет назад
What would happen if there were only one magnet at one of the poles? You said that one magnet needs to act as the "pull" and one as the "push". So if there was only one magnet, would it simply be a weaker movement because there's only a "pull" or would it not even move? That's my first question Secondly, I'm assuming that the magnetic field in the coil only exists on either end until half each magnet. Otherwise if the South Pole of one magnet is attracted by the field, the north pole of that very same magnet should be repelled by that field, leading to no motion. So we are to assume that the field ends before the outer extremities of the magnet?
@aleksandarjakimov6830
@aleksandarjakimov6830 5 лет назад
If you have magnets only at one side of a battery you would not have current because only magnets at both side create closed loop for a current to flow. Magnets here act as a conductor.

That is a very good clip. My son followed your video but we don't know why it is not working. We have neodymium magnet, bare copper wire and 1.5 v alkaline battery. We made sure North side of magnet pointing outside. But the train was not moving inside the copper wire. Do we need to wrap around copper wire very tight? You don't want the gap in the copper wire is too big but it is hard to make a very tight coil by hand. I wonder whether the gap is the reason that our train was not moving. Please help. My son's science fair project is due next week and we would love to show this to the audience if possible. Thanks!
@TheSciGuys
@TheSciGuys 8 лет назад
+Roy Xu I would say that the gap may be the issue. We had gaps and it would sometimes fall in between and break the circuit. Also make sure you are using a AAA battery because it's smaller and lighter than a AA battery. It was tough for us as well to wind it tight and mark had to really force it together to keep the gaps as close as possible. You may want to try a slightly thinner wire because it may be easier to wind tightly. Also make sure you are using a fresh battery. Those are my best suggestions.

can we use use aluminum instead of copper for this?
@tilenkek4889
@tilenkek4889 29 дней назад
Well it would work but not as good as with cooper, because Al is paramagnet material when Cu is diamagnetne material. Paramagnetic substances are characterized by the fact that the magnetic moments will be partially directed in the direction of the external field, which causes a slight attraction between the coil and the train. Whereas diamagnetic substances are considered to develop a weak magnetic moment opposite to the direction of the external field and will be slightly repelled by the magnet, which will help the train move more smoothly. So in the short it would work but not as good as on the video. I hope that would help you and also I wish you as much success and experimentation as possible.
@katiesims2841
@katiesims2841 6 лет назад
Can you tell me why aluminium wire isn't used for this? We were able to get the copper wire to work and make the train move forward. Then using the same gauge (18) aluminum wire and same battery, it seemed to reject the train and moved slightly backwards.We are having trouble finding why this might happen.
@yoichihirose3806
@yoichihirose3806 6 лет назад
Presumably aluminum wire is applicable for this application. The resistivity of (industrially pure) aluminum is slightly larger than the resistivity of copper, but not much different from copper. Of course, there are some shortcomings in the use of aluminum wire. First, the mechanical strength of aluminum is lower than that of copper and it is easily deformed by the externally applied force. Second, due to the thin oxide film on the surface of the aluminum, the contact resistivity between the wire and the (nickel coated) neodymium magnet can be slightly larger in the case of aluminum. Either way, I think you can use it. Perhaps the direction of the windings is reversed? Please try to flip the direction of “the battery train”.

+Avighna Jha try making the loops closer together or repositioning the magnets by changing the pols. We had to play around a bit before we could get it to run smooth through.

Guys this video is photoshopped. 1) firstly the neodyium magnets have to touch both the upper part of the coil and the lower part . In the animated part of the video they said the exact same thing however if u look at the function of the train it does not portray the given thing . So it's photoshopped
