This is the most insane piece of history that I've ever been a part of. How did a professional opera singer end-up researching metal screams?!
Two years ago, Will Ramos and I met for the first time and we put a camera down his throat (full laryngoscopy). Fast forward a lot of collabs later, we met back at the University of Utah Health to conduct some of the most in-depth vocal research ever performed. As Patient Zero, Will Ramos not only reveals his innards through these comprehensive tests, he also is shaping the future of voice science.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she works alongside the team at The University of Utah Health and the VAST research lab on the first ever harsh vocal research study of this kind.
Chapters:

11:15 Acoustic Analysis
18:18 Aerodynamics and Laryngoscopy

I thought i was doing it right but now i'm not just refining my technique with a coach but also kind of relearing to do it all over again but properly, and my coach is the one actually pushing me to stay safe and disciplined with my vocals to prevent (further) injury. Never in my life did I expect to see metal vocalizations become a scientific pursuit like this. I'm completely enthralled by the concept of "primal" vocalization and what we might be able to learn about screaming through biological and evolutionary perspectives. I'm also eager to peer into the throats of other metal vocalists to see how they contort and engage their muscles and the impact it has on their sound and vocal capabilities. Amazing work Will, Elizabeth, and the entire UofU team!

Well I can say one thing. I've seen a lot of laryngoscopys and most vocalist do not contort their throat in the way will does, even when producing very similar sounds. There's a lot of naivety in the way this is handled in my personal opinion. I hope we do see more of these though.

I have to say as someone who has been listening to this kind of music for 20+ years and being told by friends, family or anyone who finds out I listen to this music say "oh the screamers? There is no talent. It's just noise." Seeing people taking the time, energy and resources to put science behind primal vocals. Yes I'm using that now lol. It brought me so much joy I was tearing up. I can't wait for this to be in a written research document. This is so great. I hope you convince more vocalists to take part in this research like Dani Filth, Alex Terrible, Kyle from Brand of Sacrifice and Bryan Garris from Knocked Loose. Angela Gossow wrote theory articles about how she did her growls but it musty focused on how she used her diaphragm. So it is exciting that we are doing the theory about how to us your vocal chords, tongue and head space added on to how we know how to use breath control, posture and diaphragm. I'm so excited for this. Like I said I have been listening to this type of music for 20+ years and it makes me so happy that science is now backing what my ears and heart have been hearing.

As amazing as the data Will's contributed has been, there's a *lot* to be learned from comparing and contrasting with others. If the only example of a building you ever saw was the leaning tower of Pisa, you might never realize that it was an anomaly. With Will being the baseline, more data's needed to find out if his techniques/methods/ability are consistent examples or anomalies. His eagerness to help find that out, and just general tendency to be an awesome person *are* a bit of an anomaly themselves, so it's hard to tell.

This research is actually invaluable. Understanding the vocal tract to the degree of depth that the data from these tests have provided could help so many people. This could help vocalists mitigate the risk of hurting themselves through scientifically backed coaching, provide insight for more advanced vocal reconstructive surgeries for people with vocal cord disorders, and possibly even be a stepping stone towards vocal modification surgeries that allow people to change aspects of their vocal range in the distant future.

I think vocal pedagogy's focus on only the function of the folds themselves has always been very very short-sighted. The folds don't make you sound like you, they aren't the be-all-end-all, and these videos are actually breaking people's common assumptions finally. I love this so much

Definitely bookmarking this to show it to my university voice students! I teach Alexander Technique, working with movement habits, and this is fantastic information about the relationship between specific vocal habits and larger movement patterns (when he's talking about turning his head, experiencing neck soreness, etc). It also clearly shows how our widely socially accepted aesthetics of sound or posture (clean, right angles, verticality) are absolutely not the only way to create healthy movement or muscle activation. What a fantastic study! Thank you so much for sharing this with the world.
