Good popcorn is the gold standard for a good movie theater, sometimes elevating a humble theater to a first class one. That pre-bagged popcorn is usually the mark of a second rate theater.

Liked it. Thanks for posting. Was a master of the pop corn machine as a movie theater employee, back when theaters had platters and reels in the booth. Popped corn in an industrial sized popper (not in view of the public) that we used to pop and bag, …then we’d move the popcorn to the big warmers at the concession stand for serving. Sound of popping corn is unique. Nothing else in the world sounds like it.

Corn was domesticated about 10,000 years ago in what is now Mexico. Archaeologists discovered that people have known about popcorn for thousands of years. Fossil evidence from Peru suggests that corn was popped as early as 4700 BC

I was a kid in the 1060s living in a small town in southern Minnesota. We had a couple movie theaters that sold a box of popcorn for 15 cents, but it was not buttered. Buttered popcorn at these particular theaters sold for 25 cents and it was in a smaller container. There was an older man who was handicapped and had to use a wheelchair; he had a popcorn stand that he would drive all over the city and sell a box of corn that had a lot of butter that he would squirt from a bottle in your box. His regular box of popcorn was 10 cents. Everybody wanted his corn. I remember seeing long lines in the summer, people waiting to get his corn. We would also sneak this corn in the movie theaters, some people were caught. The corn had lots and lots of butter. Your hands were loaded with butter when you ate it--so you would need a napkin. I'm not sure but to get such large crowds of people after his corn I think he might have added sugar to the butter.

I was in a film operator forum, one of the guys asked, how to remove popcorn from the silverscreen without damaging. Well, I remember a time, where talking about a clean silverscreen was more related to the content of the show, where movie goers didn't spread the popcorn everywhere.

Interesting, I thought bagged popcorn was a modern invention, since we expect everything to be portable and quick. I pop my popcorn on the stove in a pot and I don't find it difficult, so I'm surprised that that process is what drove bagged popcorn, especially 40 years ago.

I love movie theater popcorn and my family knows it. If there is a kid's movie they do not want to see they call me up to take my nieces and nephews and their friends to it. I've seen MANY a terrible movie, yet have always loved the popcorn.............Also, I lived directly across the street from a movie theater, in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, and would go there to just buy a tub of popcorn to take home and watch a DVD. The first time I went there I tried to explain to the box office guy I didn't want to see a movie, that I just wanted to buy a tub of popcorn. He thought I was nuts, which I probably am to a certain degree, yet he let me in and I walked out with my lovely bouquet of buttery popped corn................... and nowadays, if I attend a film they have FREE refills, life is grand. Enjoy your day

@@FilmmakerIQ Thanks. I recently switched to Jiffy Pop, because they were a bit cheaper than Orville and I'm going back to Orville. Jiffy isn't fluffy enough. I was lucky enough to find your channel through the chat board on Moviechat discussion of "It's a Wonderful Life." It was a direction to your public domain video. If you can, tell me why theaters charge the same price for EVERY movie or better yet, make a video about it. If I see Jumanji opening weekend or wait two months I gotta dole out the same dough. Or a movie that isn't gonna be a blockbuster still charges the same as "End Game", it makes ZERO sense. Movies might actually make more money by lowering their price of admission, if they aren't going to be a blockbuster. They'd get people thinking, "maybe I'll give this movie a shot, it doesn't cost all that much" and then BANG the person liked it and tells his/her two friends and they like it and they tell two friends and they tell two friends and so on and so on.... LOL that's a Faberge commercial line. It's interesting that Tuesday's out handle Monday's Wednesday's and Thurday's. Why? Because it's discount day. Lesser known movies would make more in the theater by lowering price.
@FilmmakerIQ
@FilmmakerIQ 4 года назад
If theaters charged different prices for the type of movie, it's going to be the opposite way... The Blockbuster are going to cost more than the indie films. And in some ways that's exactly what theaters are doing with premium pricings for things like IMAX and 3D. The fact of the matter is it costs the same amount of money to run a big hit movie that it does a small movie so there's no reason to lose money by charging less for the small movie. and I imagine the accounting was just easier to deal with than having all sorts of different kinds of prices.

Wait if there is colored kernel corn could the popcorn be the same color or the color of that kernel. For example. Orange, red, black, brown colored corn.
@FilmmakerIQ
@FilmmakerIQ 9 лет назад
Joshua Small While the kernels may come in a variety of colors, only the hull/pericarp is colored. The popped corn gets its color from the inside endosperm tissue, which is always off-yellow or white. Popcorn is scientifically known as Zea mays everta which means "corn turned inside out".

The last movie I saw in a theater was "Saving Private Ryan." I stopped going to theaters because the experience was no longer worth the price of admission. Growing up in the 60s and 70s I loved going to the movies. I went to at least a movie a week. Sometimes two or three. You could walk into the theater at your convenience and if you missed some of the feature you could stay in your seat and watch it again. The only thing they advertised on the screen was coming attractions and the snack bar. Anybody who lived in or visited San Francisco in that era remembers the bargain matinee theaters on Market Street. Go before 2 p.m. and the price of admission was $1.00. My favorite theater was "The Strand" which showed a different double-feature everyday. The marquee of The Strand is still there but the actual theater is now a garbage strewn lot. All of those theaters have either been torn down or converted to other uses.. There are only a handful of independent theaters left in San Francisco. All of the great movie palaces are either gone or have been converted to multi-theaters. Now with the advent of high definition wide-screen televisions, I don't feel like I'm missing much. If I want to watch "The Godfather" in my underwear, no big deal.

I think movie theaters charge way to much for their snack food and I think it's an excuse when they say. they need to charge thar much to make ends meet. If the theater is a small local theater. I can understand. But not these places that are big chains. Like Regal Cinemas and etc... I'm not talking about popcorn. But the exact same box of candy I can buy at dollers tree for one buck. but the theater charges 4.50 or more for the exact same thing. lol
@FilmmakerIQ
@FilmmakerIQ 8 лет назад
It doesn't matter how big the theater chain is - since they legally can't be associated with the movie studio, they're always splitting ticket prices with the studio. After taking out rent, electricity, wages and upkeep, there's probably not much left. Concessions is where the money is really made. With candy there's still a per unit fee - say $.40 for something they charge $5 for. Popcorn on the other hand... how much does the kernels in an $11 popcorn really cost? Like $.15?? That's the real markup.
@SchardtCinematic
@SchardtCinematic 8 лет назад
+Filmmaker IQ I understand now. I hardly go to a theater at all anymore because of the cost. I took my kids to see the Force Awakens in January and it cost so much for the snacks and drinks. we all shared one bucket of popcorn though. but the smaller snack candy went up alot since I saw a movie last in a big chain theater. before that I saw pacific rim with my nephew in a doller budget theater and there snacks were not as expensive and that was only 2 years ago.
