Once again, nice technical video👍👍. I just bought an inexpensive set of Mont Marte water mixable oils - just a small starter set, to test this medium. They say with their brand (Mont Marte) you can mix small percentages of acrylics, or gouache. So I tested this. With the acrylics, I also have Mont Marte signature acrylics - I use for blocking in lower levels of paintings. I mixed various percentages of the water mixable oils and acrylics - all the way up to about 80% acrylic. I was shocked how seemlessly the paints mixed - and spread on a test surface. It shows no cracking, at this time - about 10 days later. But ...the application was thin, not thick. The potential archiveability issue - that I haven't looked into. Completely surprised how easily they mixed though! Anyway, nice episode. If things go my way, I will be looking to use oil over acrylic (block in, or underpainting) more, and having tested these budget Mont Marte water mixable oils, I'm curious as to the Grumbacher Max. I admit to being partial to Grumbacher. I used there Pre test in my youth - my preferred choice, though used some Winsor Newton (they only had pro paints back then). I've also become a huge fan of the Grumbacher Academy acrylic line - due to the fine dispersion of the pigments in an acrylic formula that, for me, blends better, and more predictably than any acrylic paint I've used - that includes Golden Open (a close second when I add a little propylene glycol to the Grumbacher), and Winsor Newton professional (older - pre the new longer open time formula). Keep up the good videos!

Can you address whether water soluble oils are archival? What is the chemical rationale/basis for believing that water soluble oil painting will not break down over time.
@MotHostofJerrysLive
@MotHostofJerrysLive 3 месяца назад
Water soluble oils are just as archival as traditional oil paints! This is because, once the paint starts to dry, the surfactant evaporates and is removed from the paint. This makes it so that water soluble oils are no longer water soluble after they begin to dry, but they become chemically the same as traditional oil paints, and thus cure and age the same as them as well.

I do have a question about traditional oil paint.....how much linseed oil is too much? How does that affect archivability?
@MotHostofJerrysLive
@MotHostofJerrysLive 3 месяца назад
Generally, the exact amount of linseed oil that you can mix into your oil paints varies between different brands and different colors depending on the pigment load. a good rule of thumb is to not mix any more than what creates a runny sour cream consistency in your paint. Too much linseed oil can cause your paints to yellow and age prematurely since linseed oil naturally yellows over time. Too much oil can also mess with the structure of your paint if it is applied thickly, causing the paint to wrinkle. The highest ratio of linseed to oil paint you use should be applied thinly to prevent this. Keep watching the Science of Art to see our episode on the chemistry behind oil paint in the future!

Thanks for the great information. Is there differences in dying times between the brands of water soluble oils? (Regular thickness)
@MotHostofJerrysLive
@MotHostofJerrysLive 3 месяца назад
The drying times between different brands may vary slightly depending on the different levels of surfactant, oil content, and the type of oil used but for the most part they should cure at similar rates. If you're curious about the drying rates of the different types of oils used in paints, there may be a future Science of Art video for you!
