When you mix cornstarch and water, weird things happen. Sometimes it acts like a liquid and sometimes it acts like a solid. Now, a team of MIT engineers have developed a mathematical model that can accurately predict this material's behavior under various conditions. (Learn more: news.mit.edu/2019/oobleck-beha...)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT RU-vid channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

Actually there is a practical application, if you put a non-newtonian fluid on the road to as a speed bump, a car moving below the speed limit wouldn't experience the bump but a car that is would.

I remember being at a high school party in 1980 and a kid made some of this “oobleck.” I immediately thought of using this stuff as both an armor and a self-healing material. There are so many possible “exotic” materials. We’ve really only begun exploring them. Every solid or liquid element or compound could be explored across a huge range of particle sizes in binary and even poly-material combinations to exploit all kinds of physical and chemical properties. Heterogenous suspension and particularly colloid materials (including foams, gels, sols, emulsions, etc.) are a field with vast unexplored regions. Nature exhibits many material mixtures within such things as snow, bone, blood, milk, lungs, slimes, honeycombs, wood, bark, hyphae and pumice.

theres other types of slime. silly putty aint cornstarch. ive got a tube or two of silicone based stuff. clays admittedly dont do it... but then clay slurry also behaves strangely when something like sodium silicate is added... goes the other way! thins out... holds way more solid material in suspension...all about anions and cations in that case...

Makes me wonder if a non-newtonian fluid has ever been used in a commercially viable linkage between an engine and an automatic transmission. I would call it a torque converter, but I think it would have a different name because the mechanism would be completely different. Maybe just the shape of two interlocking combs but obviously extruded around their rotational axis and with slots milled radially so it looked like an extreme herb grinder.

1:50 - Bulletproof vests huh? That reminds me of shield technology in sci-fi (like in the _Stargate_ series) which exerts a force directly proportional to the amount of force being exerted on it, so that a bullet would be stopped but a knife wouldn't. I wonder if the Goa'uld started out experimenting with a cornstarch-like substance before adapting it to energy. 🤔

Came here for culinary reasons, but then I remembered how often in recipes like when throwing together a homemade dry shampoo to be wet, I noticed I accidentally made non-Newtonian fluid, which I know from when you put it on a subwoofer or speaker cones playing tones, makes geometric designs in like Mandlebrot pattern shapes. Sorry if anything is spelled wrong, I just kinda threw this comment together on the fly.
