gttp1111 hey I hate to be "that guy" but I don't think your suggestion makes total sense... if that were true, then smaller dogs (who have faster heartbeats) would die earlier than larger dogs. But this is not the case. (Smaller dogs have less of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor or IGF1, which causes both growth AND aging. There's an extremely interesting scientific article/review by Cynthia Kenyon regarding the discovery of the aging pathway if you want to know the details. I think she also did a TED talk if hard science isn't your thing.) That being said, I don't have a better answer for why dogs' lifespans are shorter than those of humans. My guess is that it wasn't evolutionarily advantageous for the wolves that would have eventually evolved to be dogs to live much longer after they became reproductively incapable. Old wolf/dog ancestors who couldn't reproduce would put strain on the rest of their pack and ultimately reduce the reproductive fitness of the family line. So, perhaps wolves and dogs die earlier than we do because their ancestors were making way for their children to take over. That's just a guess though.
