I've worked as a teacher for five years. It's hard to be 100% every day. I teach from 8-3 with a 50-minute break each day, and I'm burnt out by the time my afternoon classes roll around. The best thing I've learned is to not teach all the time. Teach mini-lessons for 5-10 mins, have the students work together for a little bit, then shift to independent assignments. The bulk of the work is independent, so I try to make that as engaging and hands-on as possible so kids don't become disruptive over boring assignments.

Avoiding burnt out if an important part of all jobs, but especially of being a teacher.

The amount of emotional and mental energy that teaching takes is vastly underrated. Many teachers are overloaded with classes to teach, and we can't perform as well as we'd like to. Students would benefit so much and teachers would be much happier if those in power understood this.

@@marcoferrao I totally agree that it takes a lot of education and experience to make good teachers. Teacher ed is not doing a good job at that letting unqualified people become teachers. But it's also a egg and chicken problem. Many, and probably the majority, of the teachers do not show that they worth more than what they are paid for. And it became a low-paid "industry" where quality people don't enter.

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” - William Arthur Ward Just recently made a video about dropping out, because quite often I just get told stuff that I should memorize. But we have one incredibly inspiring professor, he makes up for all the rest. It's so valuable to have at least one great teacher!

Indeed, The best teacher I could think of is the one who makes Difficult things easy and trains you to overcome it and makes your most hated/topic enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring. Just as said in the vid, Teaching is very complex, so We should be investing more in education, and in the education, the teachers. For humanity to truly improve, "we must learn to learn".

Your teaching made me feel brilliant in a world that kept telling me I was stupid and predisposed for failure. I completed assignments ahead of time and read through the entire text book several times for my own enjoyment. Today I am still someone who cares about the lives of folks around the world who walk a different life than myself. I am still able to wonder about who other people are in depth and wonder and joy. The best thing I have experienced in school (besides my friends) is being taught by the teachers I had. If a teacher can explain things difficult in a way that you understand, it gives you a confidence boost, knowing you just learned and UNDERSTOOD a difficult concept.

It's very easy to say that it is all on the teacher but the reality for anyone who actually works in education is much different. Kids do not want to learn, they are disrespectful and even violent. Teachers are underpaid, overworked and not taught any actual strategies on how to teach or manage a class. So sure, the video makes some valid points but it was clearly not made by someone who is in with with teaching in our current world.

My most impressive teachers were in physics and chemistry in middle school. Physics was, in retrospect, very impressive, because I had no problems there, although the teacher had high expectations and I regularly almost failed maths. When we had a change of teacher in maths and got him as a new teacher, my grades on the report card rose by 2 grade points in 3 years (I had to make up a lot) and thus enabled me to pursue further school careers. My chemistry teacher, while we were studying the Bohr atomic model in class, sat me down and talked to me about how the paths of electrons are calculated and what different shapes their paths can take. He encouraged me to learn more about the subjects that actually interested me, even if it wasn't supposed to be 'age-appropriate'.

An important thing for a teacher I believe is to complement a student's honest efforts. It's a simple psychology. There are students who never get enough credit for than what they originally deserve so simply complementing their little achievements at a young age boosts their motivation dramatically and also helps them grow with a positive vibe.

Excellent video! Although I understand the need to stress the majour role teachers play, yet factors such as uniforms, classroom size, etc. do matter in some ways, depending on the circumstances. And yes, they may not be directly related to academic learning in schools, but can be related to wellbeing, social and emotional learning and a positivo and inclusive school environment. These, in turn do have an impact on academic learning and achievement.

Teachers are one of the most undervalued resources we have in society and is a profession that should be much better compensated. Good teachers can change lives, set up children for greatness and help change the world for the better. Every parent wants the best education for their child and every child, who becomes an adult will remember that one special teacher who changed their lives.

I'm late but I recoomend Mind Maps and Memory Palaces and the Major System. These three memory strategies are game changing. And if you need a strategy to get to work when not motivated, there's a trick. Instead of letting your mind wander, put your awareness on the task, and imagine that it will be over fast and with little effort. The idea here is to remove the fear of work. Then do the very first tiny action : if you're supposed to do your homework, simply raise your hand and reach for your book. If you're supposed to practice the piano, go and sit on your piano chair, putting your fingers on the keyboard. Please let me know if you tried and enjoyed those tips.

In the video "The Science of Teaching, Effective Education, and Great Schools," various instructors emphasize the importance of evidence-based strategies and techniques for enhancing student learning. These educators highlight practices such as active learning, differentiation, and formative assessment, which are essential to ensuring that students grasp and apply knowledge effectively. Being an educator for over 15 years I am in agreement that an example of an effective elementary school instructor is someone who prioritizes interactive and engaging learning experiences. By incorporating hands-on activities and collaborative group work, these teachers help young students understand and apply key concepts in real-world contexts. This approach not only deepens understanding but also fosters a positive attitude toward learning. Through frequent, low-stakes assessments, they can provide timely feedback and adjust their teaching methods to better meet the needs of individual students. This kind of responsive teaching is a hallmark of effective education and creates a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. Overall, the relevance of these instructors lies in their ability to connect research-based strategies with practical classroom application, making learning both meaningful and enjoyable for elementary students.

How about 'old-school' teachers who refuse to change anything about their teaching methods? Reasons : 1) my way works for years, why do I need to change anything? 2) my way still produces the result that I want, I do not what to add more work by learning or preparing anything new.

My teachers who used old school methods are actually much better than those so-called creative and innovative teachers. Don't underestimate years of experience, those older teachers really know how to teach even though they are senior citizens. They still have old values, such as hardwork, preserverance and real mastery of the subjects they really love to teach for years. New methods? You know what happened to the students when whole language trend replaced phonics.

Great videos and comments. I teach online one-to-one and this can be very challenging when teaching children 8 years old and above. It is truly important to make classes engaging, but for a teacher it can be too much engagment. Sadly, kids will expect this and use it as play time and forget what they've learned. As a teacher, I'm learning to balance it and keep them educating me of what they've learned and apply it to real life.

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:5 [KJV]) And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27) Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)

Great stuff overall! One thing really stuck in my craw, though: In one video you talk about teachers teaching to the test, as if it is an undisputed good thing. I really wish you would edit that video and/or have a new video on the dangers of standardized tests constructed way more because administrations find easy things to administer and measure rather than concentrating on what is a good measure of real useful learning. Good measures are harder, more time consuming, and therefore more expensive, but actually useful. Also note the well documented effect of discovering some data correlated with good outcomes (learning here), and then basing a high stakes evaluation on relatively easily measured correlated data, and the people being evaluated (teachers here) then concentrating on maximizing the correlated feature and giving less attention to the good thing that it was originally correlated with. A main example: If I am adept at a subject, I will probably manage to handle facts associated with the subject pretty well, and wow, facts are easy to test! Unfortunately facts and formulas are also easy to teach in isolation without the deep understanding important for mastery.

Imagine wanted to learn to play basketball 🏀. Then a coach rather just tell you how basketball works and how important dribble, shooting, defending and roles etc. That's why learning should be taught physically other than memorization etc.

2:39 Not sure about student feedback, that would hinge entirely on the willingness of the student to learn (If they are interested in the subject, as opposed to being forced into because a certain legislation in Australia forces them to), I've personally witness students over here in NSW literally preferring teachers who don't give a [redacted] for student behaviour, where they get to metaphorically [redacted] me all day long... Maybe it's just me or it's just this school, but this issue is so bad it's honestly not funny.

My high school computer science classes were great. We’d spend a bit of time learning, and then start working on a project to make it stick. And the teacher was always available to help us whenever we inevitably got stuck. Really feels like a downgrade in college, where they just dump info on you for 2 hours.

I think we need to address real intitutional barriers to learning inside a box of 30 kids. Class size does matter. Your Ivy League studies don't impress my kids. Being stuck inside a box all day greatly stifles our natural desire to roam, discover and learn on our own as kids. Kids learn best when they get to ask the questions. Forcing kids to learn pointless information they do not want to know while being held captive is wrong. Think outside the classroom box. How to escape the education matrix.

This can’t be truer. If you are Nigerian here, do everything you can to ensure your children attend good schools. Scrap that “suffering is part of training” mentality. In “suffering” schools, your children are learning the bare minimum. And in the long run, you and them will suffer for it.

stop telling everyone that has a teaching position, how great they are . most of them are NOT.. the few that are good, are life enhancing and are never forgotten. stop paying bad teachers. universities dont do this as the norm, why do high schools and lower do this? most teachers are NOT heroes, this assuming that they are, actually insults those few who really are good.
