Nina Teicholz is the author of the international and New York Times bestseller, The Big Fat Surprise. This book has upended the conventional wisdom on dietary fat-especially saturated fat-and challenged the very core of our nutrition policy. Much of my audience is familiar with Jason Fung’s work and she wrote the Forward in his groundbreaking book The Diabetes Code.
She talks about what’s wrong with the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020 Update, and benefits of eating red meat. If you’re one who’s been struggling with wanting to eat more fat, but afraid that eating a low carb high fat diet isn’t healthy, this interview will give you a fresh perspective and peace of mind.
Nina Teicholz is an investigative science journalist and Executive Director of The Nutrition Coalition, which is a nonprofit, non-partisan group that is free from industry funding, and committed to ensuring that the U.S. Nutrition Guidelines’ process is transparent and scientifically rigorous, in order to ensure that the Guidelines are trustworthy and evidence-based.
Nina’s writing has also been published in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, MedScape, and many others.
Teicholz attended Yale and Stanford where she studied biology and majored in American Studies. She has a master’s degree from Oxford University and served as associate director of the Center for Globalization and Sustainable Development at Columbia University.
Note: Reshape Physical Therapy and Wellness evolved into Weight Loss for Health, and finally Zivli. How to Lose Weight After 50 was our first course that eventually grew into Zivli. Some old blog posts or resources mentioned in this episode may have been removed.

This information was good but bittersweet. My mother followed the heart healthy diet, switching beef for turkey, using low fat milk, and skipping butter and cheese. Because of this, I now know why she had uncontrollable diabetes and eventually succumbed to cancer, which I believe was brought on by inflammation. I have many relatives and friends who cringe when I eat butter and put full fat cream in my coffee, but I appreciate satiety more than their opinions. It feels good not to be hungry “all the time” like I was on a low fat diet.

It's painful and so depressing when I think of my own mother. She was so interested in nutrition and stuck so close to low fat, meat free, oleo, crackers bread and constant cravings and misery. "Rice cakes and chicken" She managed to stick to every possible number, sugar, BP well controlled, weight controlled with much struggle. Died of a massive stroke a full 14 years before her mothers death and 6 years before her father who smoked three packs of smokes a day and was overweight. So much effort, doing everything right and was total fail. Her brother died same way at age 72. The low fat diet is a complete lie.

My wife and I switched to Healthy Keto we have lost about 50 lbs a piece. And we feel way better. We were not really that over weight but it’s crazy how fast the weight fell off. She got Covid and only had a stuffy nose and tired the whole time. I think it has definitely helped our inflammation and my cholesterol and health numbers have never been better.

The major scientific journals, which are supposed to be the vetting agencies for scientific papers, are really beginning to get a black eye lately, and it's only going to get worse as news of their poor performance where it comes to things like heart disease come to public light. I mean, Ancel Keys' work should have NEVER been able to pass peer review if the process was working correctly and in an unbiased fashion. And the same issues remain in the science being published today. It's sad.

Great info, thanks! I was wondering, however if the importance of eating grass fed, pasture raised organic red meat (and chicken, etc)should be addressed as well. My understanding is regular versions of these proteins can cause inflammation from GMO feed…
@boondoggle4820
@boondoggle4820 3 года назад
From what I understand it’s not as important with red meat because ruminant animals have an enzyme that can convert it into more natural forms of fat. It’s far more important with pork and chicken, but it’s nearly impossible to find chicken and pork at the grocery store that are fed their natural diet.

Livestock that is fed lots of grain (during "fattening") have very high levels of the bad Omega-6 fats that easily oxidized during cooking...and meat is always cooked. Grass fed livestock has far lower levels of those bad fats. And Omega-6's in the grass fed beef (or pork or chicken) are at least NOT the highly processed Omega-6's found in vegetable oils.

President Eisenhower used to smoke 4 packs of cigarettes PER DAY. He later reduced that habit and eventually quit butttttttttt....I bet that cigarette smoking had more to do with him having a heart attack than consuming saturated fat.

How did the Big Fat Surprise take the diet industry by storm? The diet industry is very happy to hear people want to go back to butter, meat and cheese. So many lobbies and industries are profiting from people eating animal products.

The food industry in general would stand to lose a lot if they had to provide real food instead of cheap, easy to store, highly addictive grain and sugar. Right now they pretty much have a license to sell legal cocaine. The pharmaceutical industry also wants people to keep eating this junk. It's what creates the vast majority of its customers.
