MacPherson’s Farewell is a traditional Scottish song which tells the story of James MacPherson. Also known as MacPherson’s Lament or MacPherson’s Rant. James MacPherson was an infamous outlaw from Kingussie who, in the late 1600s, targeted the rich but was generous to, and popular with, the poor. This however made him an enemy of Lord Duff, the Laird of Braco, who soon ordered his arrest and, following a court hearing, his hanging.
This musical arrangement, by Blair Parham, depicts MacPherson’s march to the gallows, his playing of the fiddle prior to his death, and his proud, rebellious ending.
Recorded live at the Perth Concert Hall, Feb 2020.
