I love that you spotted Hitchcock's cameo!

Henry, in a world of reactors who do the same 5 Hitchcock movies over and over and over, and are petrified to be the first person to react to something, you're leading the way. Great reaction as usual.

Excellent articulate reaction as usual. Like you Mrs. Higley and her baby put a lump in my throat, but then Gus was a character I really empathized with and of course Willie's evil is truly brought forth when he kills him. Hitchcock never wanted his villains to be obvious but have a perverted charm or magnetism about them.

Hume Cronyn was a Canadian actor who was in Shadow of a Doubt and who worked with Hitchcock on the preproduction of Rope.

Great reaction, Henry, and loved your commentary!

Willi is indeed evil. The shadow on his face. The way he yawns at the baby's death. Then the more obvious plotting. So when they all finally snapped and unleashed their hate and rage on him, it was quite satisfying. My favorite Hitchcock movie simply because it was a great vehicle for Tallulah Bankhead. On stage, she was peerless. But the films she did were pretty meh. She was just too wild for Hollywood. I recommend researching her.

That is indeed what the movie is trying to show us. When they attacked Willi, I was worried he would overpower them (because they were weak from hunger and thirst). But it seems I didn't need to worry at all.

Another movie about the inhabitants of a lifeboat is Abandon Ship! (1957). It was one of Tyrone Power's last films.

I'll add that to my movies list. Thanks for your suggestion! 😊

"Dying together's even more personal than living together." Fun Fact: Sir Alfred Hitchcock called in Ben Hecht to read the final script and to rewrite the ending. That's Hot Fact: According to "The Dark Side Of Genius" by Donald Spoto, Tallulah Bankhead would climb a ladder every day to reach the tank where the filming took place. She never wore underwear and regularly received an ovation from the crew. Soundtrack Choice Fact: Aside from the opening and closing scene, there is no score in this movie. The only music is the flute, played by Joe (Canada Lee). Asked why he had decided not to have any musical score during the narrative of this movie, Sir Alfred Hitchcock reasoned that the audience wouldn't know where the music was coming from in the middle of an ocean. Filmmaking Sickness Fact: The harsh conditions of the shoot took its toll: actors and actresses were soaked with water and oil, which led to two cases of pneumonia for Tallulah Bankhead, an illness for Mary Anderson, and two cracked ribs for Hume Cronyn according to his autobiography. Production was temporarily halted twice to allow for recovery of the cast. After she caught pneumonia, Tallulah Bankhead was given a puppy by Sir Alfred Hitchcock for being such a good sport during the movie. He had already named the dog Hitchcock.

When someone complained to Hitchcock about Tallulah not wearing panties, he said, “I don’t know if this is a matter for the costume department, makeup, or hair dressing.” Oh, and as always, thanks for the info.

Interesting about the soundtrack choice. I guess Hichcock wanted the viewer to feel as intimate and at the same time lonesome as much as possible as the survivors.

Well, it seemed like she didn't mind the attention. Wonder if anyone asked her why she went commando. Ohh, I never even noticed the absence of background music in the movie! Cracked ribs? A similar thing happened to the actor in "Das Boot"... Thanks for the fun facts, as usual! 😊

Bravo for watching this! I’ve been recommending it to other reactors for a year now. When I checked a year ago, no reactor had watched it. Now, you are only the second! And congratulation for seeing the cameo, which I have never noticed in maybe half a dozen viewings. I’ve seen nearly all of Hitchcock’s movies, and this has always been my favorite. The script is great, the cast is tremendous, and the direction impressively overcomes the limitations of the setting. One of the great American short stories is on this subject, “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane, which is based on Crane’s own experience. Highly recommended.

When I saw the newspaper, I wasn't too sure if that was actually Hitchcock 😂 Sure, I'll check out "The Open Boat" when I get to it. Thanks for the suggestion! 😉

Hitch knew that everyone would wonder about how they'd use the bathroom. So the initials tatooed on the man's chest is, B.M for Bowel Movement

I haven't watched this movie except here, so I haven't really felt it's emotional impact until I watch it from start to finish. So I don't know what will stand out as the most gut wrenching. I have a feeling the whole thing would be moving, just the precarity and horror of the situation. I have a phobia for deep water anyway, so would hate to find myself in that situation. After watching "The Black Stallion" as a kid it gave me nightmares for a while. Which, by the way, is a film you might like for your channel (so I won't leave any more clues than you could guess at from this comment). But I recommend it whether for the channel or not. It'll take your breath away!

Oh no~ It's better to watch the movie first before watching my reaction to it, because many scenes are not included here. Or watch along with me on Patreon 😉 I'll add The Black Stallion to my list. Thanks for your suggestion 😊

@@henryellow @henryellow Hey Henry! Not to go into my personal situation too much, but suffice to say, I make a very meager annual income, and cannot afford to do much except the basics. Obviously, you're right, watching the movie first, or especially watching it along with you and others, would be the ideal, it wouldn't be possible. I haven't even owned a television in about 7 years. But I do have this phone, and enjoy watching your reactions, even if I haven't seen the movie. I also enjoy your thoughts and insights during and after the watch. Fortunately, I have already seen the majority of movies you react to, and the ones I haven't are generally the "super hero" genre, which don't particularly interest me anyway (I may at some point watch them anyway, for your reaction, not for the movie). Thank you for adding "The Black Stallion" (1979) to your list. Be careful to not remove the "The" from the beginning, else you'll see a different Malayalam-language film made in India from 2010! (which may also be a very good film, but who knows?)

Oh, I understand. Sorry to hear that. I hope a great opportunity comes your way soon 🙏🏻🌠 I'm happy to hear that you enjoy my videos 😊. You're always welcome here! I'm pretty sure I've added the right one. I saw a black stallion in the movie poster 🐎😂

I remember hearing an interview with a supply convoy sailor from WWII. The ships were not supposed to break convoy or stop for anything if they thought enemy U-Boats were in the area. He said at one point they sailed past some survivors and a man in the water kept yelling “taxi,” at them as they sailed by but they weren’t allowed to stop and save him, so the man was just left to drown. The things you see in war…
@henryellow
@henryellow 5 месяцев назад
Oh, that's sad 😢 Now you've made me imagine that they weren't saved at the end. The movie ending never showed them getting picked up by the ship...
