At 18:30 they refer to Claudius as a, “dottering idiot”. It’s strange that he has that opinion because everything I’ve read about him said he was an able, effective and energetic emperor and a pretty accomplished man overall.
I bet the Romans built a three or four week fort there while they reconnoitered their situation. Then they moved on. The subsequent farms, tiling, and garden building tore up the evidence.
One of the ways I would have done a theory angle on that site is: There is one thing about having a temporary camp, be it a month... rather than a full fort during the invasion start. But once the area is pacified, do they need a fort with garrisoned troops there? Is there a nearby port and so on to protect. If there isnt, then why plonk resources and troops on that hill - just for giggles? Why a fort there?
It could simply be that there was farmland granted to a former soldier. The ditch a former soldier would dig would be a military ditch because that's what he knows. And then he, well, *farms it.*
