I took an elective college course on the history of architecture. One of the phrases that has always stuck with me described how architects--taught at the famous Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris--would plan building layouts. (The New York Met is a well known example of a "Beaux Art" building.) There was a "logical progression through the spaces." When you consider going into large public buildings planned according to these principles, you will find that you seemingly instinctively know how to navigate through the building--where to look for bathrooms, exits, signage, important vs. secondary spaces. Dr. Buras was talking about the exteriors of buildings--and while he didn't mention it, the same principle holds true with a classical facade. For example--you instinctively understand where primary entrances are to be found. Consider negotiating a modern airport vs. a 19th century train station. 'Nuff said.
