Iannis Xenakis was a man of many talents; a musician, musical theorist, composer, architect, and not least a Gresham Professor. Marcus Du Sautoy looks at the work of Xenakis and shows how mathematics is the foundation on which the work is built and that Xenakis is a secret mathematician.

The image shown is actually a part of a pre-notation mock-up of a single section of the piece Metastaseis, which is for a string orchestra, not solo cello. It is not the entire score; it was transcribed into traditional music notation for the musicians to read. The audio played is from the piece "Nomos Alpha," which is indeed for solo cello, but which is completely conceptually unrelated to Metastaseis. Additionally, there IS a rotating cube involved in the conception of the work, however it is not paired with another cube, but rather a 4-sided tetrahedron. I don't mean to split hairs and I'm sure few people care in any case, but while the spirit of Xenakis' ideas is decently approached, the specifics are way off.

I thank you. People should care to honour the memory of creators and set things straight for those that come after them. Too much is lost in translation and careless transfer.
