Compared to honey bees, the health of the 4,000 wild bee species native to the United States have received little to no attention. Entomologist Kris Braman explains the role wild bees play in food security and biodiversity, and shares the results of a study unlocking the secret to healthy wild bee populations in cities. Kris leads the Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia and her research not only advances our scientific understanding of insects, it has also informed public policy on issues such as pesticide use and environmental protection. The sustainable pest management practices developed by her team has helped farmers around the world reduce their reliance on harmful chemicals and increase their yields.
For her contributions in the field, Kris has received numerous awards including the Entomological Society of America’s Distinguished Achievement Award in Horticultural Entomology and Georgia Green Industry Association’s Environmental Friend of the Industry Award. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
