“Save the Bees!” has everyone abuzz about honey bees these days, but did you know honey bees don't need saving? In this talk, Biology PhD student Nick Dorian explains why it's the native bees--the more than 4000 species that live wild across North America--that desperately need our attention. He reveals the secrets lives of native bees (did you know they sleep in flowers?) and offers five easy ways everyone can help pollinators in their own backyards. Nick Dorian is an ecologist, an educator, and a naturalist. He is a PhD student in Biology at Tufts University where he studies how solitary bees-those that don’t live in hives-cope with rapidly changing environments. Nick also co-founded and runs the Tufts Pollinator Initiative, which works to conserve urban pollinators through habitat creation, community & undergraduate education, and ecological research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you for this talk! I get so excited watching native bees buzz around native plants. I hope the word spreads about the importance of native bees.

I'm in a lab that researches native bee diversity in our state in collaboration with OSU. According to the Oregon Bee Atlas, we discovered a new species a few weeks ago, apparently in the Tetraloniella genus, which was previously unknown to Oregon. There is still so much we don't yet know or understand about so many bee species and all their life histories, and they are disappearing faster than we can even come close to discovering them all. I noticed a staggering decline in the number of larger specialist genera like Megachile, Eucera, Svastra, and Colletes, and a worrying increase in smaller generalist ones like Agapostemon, Halictus, and Lasioglossum over the last 2 years that I have been paying attention. Don't get me wrong, those smaller species are wonderful, especially the charismatic ones like Agapostemon and Hylaeus. But it is concerning that the balance appears to be shifting so rapidly. It doesn't help conservation efforts that the taxonomy is so confusing. So we're trying to do our part! Believe me, Oregon entomology research is very neglected compared to California, Washington, and especially British Columbia.

I’ve been saying this since before this guy was born. No one really understands what the honeybees are doing to native bees

Native bees will never have the capacity to keep up with the amount of human consumption
