Do you like discovering the next cult classics? Do you like over-analysing concept albums? Do you like people who talk about films they think are OK but obnoxiously waste their time saying "but it would be better if"?
Enchanted Essays posts new videos about books, films and more every Friday. I alternate between reviews and video essays weekly. I try to introduce people to obscure movies and TV shows, and look at familiar films from a perspective you may not have seen before. I struggle to stick to a niche, but I'm planning multiple videos analysing James Bond films, Disney films, concept albums and adaptations.

For what it is, it is great. It is a collection of Beatles' videos (as we now call them) stuck together with a collection of skits that have no connection and no meaning and no structure beyond the "mystery tour", which it certainly is. The soundtrack is Beatles' music, so that's marvelous. People seemed to be expecting the answers to life, the universe and everything. If it weren't the first of its kind, people might have been a bit more prepared for it. Another point at which The Beatles were ahead of the rest of us, as they still seem to be.

It's possible Paul and John were inspired by the Monkees tv show when making the Magical mystery tour. It does have that zany Monkees humour feel to it and the song sequences in the film are reminiscent of their tv show.

Great job, and great to hear someone who (would try) to get this helter skelter of a movie! I like your thought on it and it made me think about it some further and into the terms of being a variety show etc. Still, to me, it is more of a piece of art than a movie - like a visual painting in a museum. Me and my cousins were huge Beatles fans when we were younger and when our families met we always talked about Beatles and their music, and their films. My cousins managed to see Mystery Tour before I did and I got excited to hear about it, and I remember being quite disappointed when the only thing they said was "It's basically about Ringo going on this bus trip with his aunt, and then things happens". It wasn't until I managed to borrow a copy of the movie and watched it myself that I realised that my cousins explanation was the only sensible thing you could say to describe the movie! Perhaps, it would have been an actual movie if it had a proper director behind the camera, but then, I guess it would've lost its charm. I guess. It's a mystery in itself. 😂

What a great thesis. Good observation on the move from b/w to colour tv in UK homes. I dont think my parents got colour (probably from EMI's Radio Rentals!) until some time after maybe 1977!

This film has elements of 50s and 60s European cinematography, especially the Fool on the Hill and the Blue Jay Way segments. I think the Beatles were probably one of the greatest English cinematographers of the 60s because of that, probably equal to or even better than their music.

🤔 Remember watching this on TV 📺 just once, it was never repeated again in my country New Zealand. Although I very much enjoyed the Beatles first two movies 🎥. This short feature made no sense whatsoever. I guess if i re-watched it today, it would still not make any sense !.

I always wondered what would've happened to The Beatles if Brian Epstein were still alive. He was the man who made The Beatles famous, he made them tour all over the world and feature in movies and put out an album every six months. If he hadn't of died, I wonder if stuff like Magical Mystery Tour, Apple Corps and even their break up all together would've happened. That being said he always had their best interests at heart, and usually let them do what they wanted. Like when they had enough of touring he didn't force them to keep doing it.
@EnchantedEssays
@EnchantedEssays 11 месяцев назад
I think he would have kept them together longer, as the Allen Klein stuff was the main source of the break up. I think they would have still spent less time together, but I think they would have just spent more time between Beatles albums doing independent projects, like we saw John and George talk about during get back. I think there was a chance that Apple would have lasted longer if he was in charge too (although it may not have started at all with him around). Magical Mystery Tour started filming a few weeks after he died, so I don't think it would have been so different, but maybe he would have tried to spin it differently with the press or something so it wouldn't have had the reputation it had at the time.
@Kieop
@Kieop 10 месяцев назад
@@EnchantedEssays Brian had already greenlit Magical Mystery Tour. The difference would've been that it would've been better planned in terms of accommodations, locations and personnel. I agree with you that he would've tried to spin it differently as well. As for Apple, it grew out of a Brian Epstein tax dodge scheme, but he died before it could be set up and so his brother wanted it to be a boutique and The Beatles wanted it to be "everything".

MMT is bad. I've watched multiple times and tried to give it a chance, but it doesn't work. They needed writers and a director. The most startling thing to me is that it came out the same year and Sgt. Pepper. From triumph to failure in the same year.

Appreciate your analysis, but IMO this is one of the weakest things The Beatles ever produced, despite all the revisionist "reappraisals". For me, the only things that prevent MMT from being a complete washout and waste of time are Mandy Weet and "Fool On The Hill".

Beatles fan of The Monkees? Lol The Monkees were a manufactured band from 1967-70. The Beatles were fans of The Goons, Spike Milligan etc. They also liked Dadaism. The MMT film wasn't variety but avant garde. Nice review, but full of holes - and lack of knowledge

Stephen, I am well aware of who the Monkees are. That’s how I know that when Michael Nesmith wrote to John Lennon asking if he wanted to meet him, John asked him to stay at his house. They had never met before. If you don’t believe me, Cynthia Lennon wrote about it in her memoirs [I can’t remember which one but I think it was a Twist of Lennon]. You can also see Mike talking to John in the Day of the Life video where they had invited other famous friends to the recording studio like Keith Richards and Donovan. That’s how I know that Micky Dolenz was invited to Paul’s house when he first came to London and was invited to the recording of Good Morning Good Morning. That’s how I know that The Monkees was one of the first TV shows to use the Beatles’ music [Good Morning Good Morning in Mijacogeo]. That’s how I know that the Beatles threw a party in the Monkees' honour when they first came to London. That’s how I came across this clip of Paul McCartney defending the Monkees during an interview in 1967: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ApeApdsL_Gc.htmlsi=_E3v5RcW3zkStNYP That’s how I know that a more accurate timeline would be 1966-1970 or 1966-2018. I know there will be other examples, but it’s been years since my full-blown Monkees hyperfixation [it’s currently “alternative” comedy, who I know were also influenced by the Goons- I knew the Beatles were fans but don’t know enough about them to speak about their influence on MMT]. I became a fan of the show because I read that the Beatles liked them in the first place. Nice comment, Steve, but full of holes - and lack of knowledge
