1. Observe the recruiting process - how do they treat you, promptness of responses, how engaged are other interviewers etc. 2. Ask questions - what kind of people get promoted here? What are your core values? How is feedback delivered?

Company culture is ever-changing and is a very unstable thing to chase. Speaking from experience, I assure you: company culture is the first thing to be sacrificed when shareholders’ value is a priority. Don’t deceive yourself!

So, does a company have shareholders and is it listed…? Is it privately held or is there private equity involved…?
@JamesPerrystuff
@JamesPerrystuff 2 месяца назад
If they prioritize the shareholders, that is their company culture. I’ve worked for a company that got bought out and the culture changed, and I left for a culture I like. Your salary and position and all those other things are out of your control just as much as culture, so of all the things you cannot control, all of which can change, I think the argument is that culture is the best one to base your decision to join/stay/leave as they change

Very good point! I appreciate that you raise this issue @AnnaSzabo! Maybe that would be another question to add: What is the biggest priority for this company? Shareholder Value / Company Culture? Anything else? And observe what answer you get from there. :-)

I think TedX is not rigorous enough! With all due respect to the speaker, the key assessment that one needs to do is of the boss that they will immediately work with! In large organisations culture is like an island. Each team has their own rules and culture. And it will change.. coming to values never ask them, they are for lip service for most enterprise.. I like the question about feedback but most hiring managers will lie. Just like the job description and actual job has a difference. Ask your interviewer and hiring manager about failure and how they react to it! When was the last time they failed and how they managed. It will tell you almost everything there is to know!
@ryan3442

This is a great question! I’d say it’s akin to reading the 1-star reviews of a product. Learning the ways a team navigates failure is very informative. Thanks!

@zenmode216, you're right, it depends a lot on the direct boss. Especially in large organization. I like your question about failure. It sounds more to me like a question you'd be asked as an applicant. And I wonder how you make sure you don't get "lip service" responses with that question. Any thoughts?

I used to work for Markforged when it was a tech startup. We had beanbag chairs in the break room, kegs with beer on tap, nerf gun wars, racing simulator competitions etc etc. Corporate brought some sensitive people on who were "offended" by it all. They wanted professionalism and structure... The writing was on the wall. It became another factory job. I quit shortly after that.

Watching this captivating video stirs up painful memories of the recent end of my 4 year relationship. My beloved partner chose to depart, leaving me with an unyielding ache. Despite my relentless efforts to reconcile, I find myself grappling with frustration and an inability to envision a future without him. Despite attempts to purge him from my mind, I remain haunted by his absence, feeling compelled to express my longing here.

For higher educated people in smaller companies I would agree. For middle and low income workers in bigger companies I would rather disagree. You can have the most eloquent interviewer with all the nice wording and talking about all the core values but who has no idea about the team at all, and the team is very good at making the numbers look better than they are. Or the HR department is the harshest and most controlling but your future team does a wonderful job, friendly with each other and other teams in the company, with only the occasional gripe about the unspeakable lady from HR.
@marionettenapmac7756
@marionettenapmac7756 Месяц назад
It sounds like you've had that experience already in the past @Laralinda. I like your point that these questions might not always work for everyone in every job interview. Maybe the point of the talk is to challenge a little more in interviews when we want to know what the company is really like. Just like the interviewers are trying to really understand if we are fit for the job. This should be a two way street. If the questions I suggest don't work for you, I am curious to hear what other questions work better.

While what she is saying does make sense- but truly what a company's culture is like is something you cannot fully tell without being there. Culture evolves. It is not stagnant. You get to know it by getting to know the people there which can't be pre-assessed.
@marionettenapmac7756
@marionettenapmac7756 Месяц назад
You're right @vintagesquare111, it's hard to know if the avocado is good without "eating" it yourself. And yet some people are really good at picking the right avocados (and companies with great corporate culture fit)... There must be something they are doing differently. I suggest it's the active participation in the interview, instead of expecting the culture to show itself to us at a later stage in our career.

I completely disagree with everything that was said in this talk. This is only personal criteria, not a methodology. Company values are BS created by HR for recrutment, like Great Place to Work (paid) results. The people you have during interviews do not represent your daily job nor the company « culture » and even if all your colleagues are amazing to work with, if your manager (or its hierarchy) is inhuman, you will not like your job. My methology is more: take the salary first, because the rest of what you see during an interview can be faked because it’s only words… Then inside the company, choose if you want to stay and have the courage to leave (there is less rush when the money is there, it is work after all, not a hobby) 😉
@marionettenapmac7756
@marionettenapmac7756 Месяц назад
I see where you are coming from. It sounds like work is a place for nothing more than a salary for you. I would love for more people like you to hate their jobs a little less. I am aware this is not going to be possible for everyone, but I am trying to bring as many as I can with me in a world where they don't have to hate working / their companies. I wish you the best with finding the place that makes you feel best.

Thank you for the tips, however, I really don't think anyone will show a real company ''face'' when asking such questions. Usually, you hear we are very open, and modern, we share feedback etc, nobody will tell you in the interview smb got promoted because of being a friend with a boss :D

@marionettenapmac7756 Месяц назад
@@xahepjuliangomezduran8610 you're absolutely right: "Of course, that was just an example " On another hand, you'd actually be surprised at the responses you might get in asking such questions. The questions are only here to help guide our decision. And if we dare enough to ask follow up questions (e.g. "Could you give me a recent example illustrating this [promotion / core value / behavior / claim of yours] ?" we might get to the core of the truth about what the company is really like. Good luck with the interviewing!

You're right. If you have the information, you can "dig" a little more! e.g. you can say "I have seen on your website that one of your core value is [xyz]. I wonder how that plays out on the daily here. Do you have a recent example that illustrate this core value in your teams?" and see what the interviewer says. You demonstrate you have done your research AND you challenge what's given to you as an evidence. All the best with the interviewing and the challenging!

I notice this lecture took place in Shanghani. As a Chinese, I have to say it's a little bit senseless to tell Chinese students about how to choose their employees. Though it's a two-way selection between a job seeker and a employee, the numbers of candidates and employees are disproportional. Seldom can those students sitting there select an employee, so what I feel after watching this video is it illustrates the significant differences of job markets between CN and the US ...lol

The secret to finding the ideal workplace is pretty simple. Stop looking for a paycheck. Research the places that offer jobs that you are interested in doing and that are preferably trained to do. Research the company... look for public comment sections about the job... maybe even interview people that already work there if possible. Do your homework. If everything sounds good... apply there and hope for the best.

@@marionettenapmac7756 Hi) Thanks for you care, im "lucky" being young and smart enough (i hope that's true) to control my thoughts, and calm down myself. I can tell about work here if you interested. Basically all that you said in this video (is that you, I'm right?) true for army. But here it's a bit more challenging because you can't choose a working please and people to work with. So only way to improve it's changing it yourself. As an officer, i need to find appropriate approach for each soldier to train him, motivate him, deal with any problems and other stuff.. (im not gonna touch war part here) I'm trying to write here something whole hour, but I didn't know what else to tell. You just do what you need, trying as hard as you can because your life is on the line (and life of much more people). I'm on professional development right now, so i have time to think and give myself a feedback. And for this you have to forget about emotions, and think logically like a machine, analyze data, look for new technologies or ideas that will improve the unit's combat capability. To look at the deaths and serious injuries of people as examples of what could have been predicted and prevented. As horrifying as it's sounds, that's the only way i know how to stay useful and continue living. Post-traumatic syndrome will come later :/

God loves you and cares for you so that this message reaches you. God is the one who created this large universe and controls it completely. The greatest loss a person loses in this life is that he lives without knowing God who created him and knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. Great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and after that you have the choice to believe in it or not to believe in it. I advise you to do this now, before you no longer have time to do so. Life is very short. It is just a test, just a passage to eternal life. Great advice to those who... Understands
