I'm not an expert, nor do I claim to be one. One thing I know for sure though... It's how to grow plants :) .
Mango Growing TIps:
Sun: Full sun
Winter: Cold sensitive hardy to around high 20F's briefly.
Root system: Tap Root.
Growth Structure: Upright growth. It can be pruned down.
Pollination: Self-fertile
Flowering: Every variety is different. But highly dependent on ambient temperatures. From middle of water to all the way into late summer. New planted trees tend to flower whenever they feel like. This is normal. As they get older, they will get more consistent.
Watering: Follow 50% rule for container plants. In ground trees follow the finger method first year in ground. Established trees, deep water.
Container growing: It does great in a container despite its type of root system.
Personal secret sauce growing tips: Watch the video :) .

different varieties grow at different rate which ones are the most aggressive growth in hot climates with scorching sun like here in central Texas (San Antonio)? I be heard malika and Manilla grow very well in Arizona so those varieties should do well here I’m guessing. Trying to figure out which ones to invest in
@qctropicals
@qctropicals Год назад
Mallika grows slow just like any other grafted mango in my area. Manilla is true to seed (polyembryonic) and for this reason they are not grafted. This is why they outperform any grafted variety. Unless you're willing to "cold protect" your mango every year for the life of the tree, my recommendation is to grow a seedling instead.

i have a few grafted trees and a few seedling trees planted in the ground here in West Covina Ca. seedling trees are way better growing and healthier than the grafted ones. my question is, i have a spot in the yard that only gets about 5-6 hours of sunlight per day. all of our other trees are getting sun all day long. do you think a young Kent mango seedling would survive in that area that doesnt get sun all day long?

Plants can also suffer more if its cold wet and wind. Its better for them to be on the dry side so there is less water in the plant and roots to freeze. And some plant will die above ground but the roots are still good and will come back.
@qctropicals
@qctropicals Год назад
Your thinking makes sense except for 2 things: 1- dry soil will freeze faster than wet soil (thermo dynamics). 2- A mango tree in my area will take easily up to 2 years to recover from severe cold damage. During this period, minimal growth and definitely no fruit. Letting the plant die above ground is simply not an option.

In terms of cold sensitive, I don't agree! I lost two mangos at temps between 30-32 overnight. NOT 25! I live in Florida. This winter I built a plexiglass greenhouse over it & added two 250W infrared lights from home depot to keep it in the 40's. It has grown a foot in last 3 weeks. Totally budding now! I just hope it does not outgrow my green house before March 31st.

you lost 2 mangos to frost. 100% of my mangos take 30f no problem briefly as long as frost or cold wind doesn't hit them.

Your leaves are of different sizes because of different varieties, not because of sunlight exposure. Your tree leaves aren't greener because they're in shade. That's nonsense. That has to do with nutrients in the soil. You're giving that mango tree in the shade way too much Nitrogen. Cut that and it may be giving you more fruit and turn the right color. Yes, there are cold-hardy varieties. Put an Asian mango next to a non-Asian mango and you'll see which one will die first. Please stop giving people incorrect information. I was laughing my head off over here. Yes, I have a mango plantation with more than a dozen varieties, so I know what I'm talking about. I also do my own grafted fruit trees.
@qctropicals

sure you do master gardener. I don't base my opinion on just 1 tree or a "dozen". I know the truth is hard to take in sometimes. If you're local stop by and I will show you real time in person proof of everything stated in this video, not just hearsay.
